NinjaFish Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I'm relatively new to fishing with jigs. I just purchased a few jig-x's and was wondering what kind of modifications yall do to your jigs (for mostly dirty water in my case) I plan on using the yum chunk in 2 3/4 in. Thank you, Alex Quote
Rob.Atl Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 You can trim the weedguard to just longer than the hook and fan it out almost into a V and cut some of the fibers out because you really will not need all of them also trim the skirt around the hook to make it shorter and make the skirt get some better action and you can add rattles to your jig and never forget your pig on the end i would look online for the proper ways to do this Quote
Castamasta Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 x2 but if i could add that the trailer should preferably be some sort of crawdad like trailer, and also try to match the trailer color with the skirt color. it has been workin for me. hey swat Quote
Super User David P Posted April 9, 2008 Super User Posted April 9, 2008 Cut a few of strands of the weed guard clean off. Then trip the tops of the rest to be flush with the hook or just a tad longer. Fan out the weed guard . Depending on the jig, trimming the skirt can also be good. I like it about a half inch to 3/4 of an inch past the hook for most of my jigs, some longer and sometimes shorter. Quote

NinjaFish Posted April 9, 2008 Author Posted April 9, 2008 appreciate all the quick results. i was piddling with the jigs tonight and i trimmed the weedguard to a lil above flush with the hook. i also wanted to "fan it out" like a few of yall mentioned, so i put a single drop of super glue on the bottom of the weed guard and worked it into a fan. seemed to work real nicely. thanks again oh, and what trailers are you guys having success with? Rob.Atl Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 i like brush hogs but mainly craws. like in black with red flake or black with blue flake. Im not sure exaclty what brand of craws but if u pick a dark color like black/blue you cant go wrong imo Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 9, 2008 Super User Posted April 9, 2008 I use Oldham's Lures Trailer Hitch Jig so there is no need to change anything Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 10, 2008 Super User Posted April 10, 2008 About the only thing I do is cut the weedguard off entirely. Think about it. If it's so stiff that it gets in the way of the hookset, it's totally useless. And, if you've trimmed it and thinned it so that it doesn't get in the way of the hookset, well, it won't get in the way of the wood or weeds either. I cut "em all of. Quote
bassgeneral Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Try this trick cut the weed guard off, attatch a hitch hiker bait holder to the eye of the jig screw in your favorite soft plastic craw and Texas rig the other end. It is still weedles without the weed guard interfering with the hook set. Quote
Big-O Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Trimming skirts and guards depends on the water structure and the type and length of trailer you use along with the strength of the guard on the jig. Action trailers like Rage Tails and Paca's need to trim skirt slightly when using chunks and not when using longer presentation craws. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 11, 2008 Super User Posted April 11, 2008 I trim the weed guard even with or just a little above the hook. I don't thin out the weed guard strands, but I bend them around in different directions, so that the top of the guard is flared out. I usually don't trim the skirt up to the back of the hook. What I do is trim the longer strands off of the skirt to that they all even up. Quote
garry77 Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Anyone trim their skirt in a teardrop to mimic a fish's profile?Kinda like a teardrop shape I guess.I've done this but I have yet to catch a fish on a skirted jig but all that could change tomorrow. Quote
