Heys folks, I am going to be heading up to the Delta from the So Cal area in the later part of March. I was hoping to get some advice about where to fish and what to use. I will be bringing up a boat and staying for three full days of fishing so I think I will have time to hit a bunch of spots. I know watching the tides and fishing while the water is moving is important.... other than that I am looking for some help.

Thanks!

If you have never fished the Cal-Delta, I sure hope you have GPS in your boat !!!

Depending on where you're fishing while out there, you can catch LMs, SMs, Spotted Bass, or Stripers there.

I would recommend watching some videos on youtube about the delta, there is good info on Calbassin.com as well.

Yes I do have GPS thank goodness, actually trying to find some decent spots and add way points. Are there any spots you would recommend. Mostly fishing for largies, but wouldn't mind throwing some bigger baits for stripers.

he is a guide that fishes the delta often and uses his SPOT GPS tracker to mark where he has been. I am sure you can locate his way points and use them.

The best thing you could do to make your trip a blast is to hire a guide for a day. One day with a guide on the delta is better than 2 weeks on the water as far as what you can learn. i fish up there quite a bit and believe me it nothing like what we have down here in So Cal

If you've never fished it before... You'll be lost. Everything on the Delta looks like prime water, and a lot is not. You could waste weeks out there with very little success depending on how and where you're fishing.

Remember tide plays a big roll in when these fish eat. Get a tide book.

Booking a guide would give you the most fun. Bobby Barrack is one hell of a spring/summer guy. He'll put you on some good size fish.

Just went out yesterday, water visibility was about a foot. Didn't catch anything and I threw everything I own

I am hoping things will be much better in a month.... your thoughts?

Should be, I think spawn will be a little late this year, so they should start actively feeding in a few weeks.

Soon the swimbait bite will start and big fish will come out

Just came back from my team tournament from my club event. Got 2 fish, nothing big. We caught more stripers then bass. Biggest fish of the tournament was 4 pounds 6 ounces. I caught mine on a fat ika pitching to some man made structure, partner caught his wacky rig senko to some fallen trees along a rocky cove. Seems like everyone else caught there on orange or white crankbaits throwing to points of point where it was meeting new water.

Water is still pretty dirty, visibility around 1-2 feet different in certain areas. I think the bass are willing to bite, but you just need to find them. They are super agressive as they are constantly splashing around in the live well and wouldn't stop even at weigh in. The bite should pick up around mid to late March.

As far as a locations go, it isn't too hard to navigate the delta, it was my first time out there. If you go into the arms and legs of the delta you are for sure going to get lost. But as long as stay on the main body you should be able to see landmarks as there are plenty of houses and weird looking structure. GPS can't hurt of course.

We launched out of Brannon Island, which has a great boat launch facility.

Lunker Punkers are not swim baits at least I don't consider them to be, Huds I would definitely throw.

All in all I had a great time being my first out in the Delta, caught my first Delta Bass and My first fish of 2010.

Lost a lot of tackle, one Spinnerbait, 3 Jigs, a Fat Ika and a Senko. This is a lot of tackle to me :P

GPS is on the boat already so I am good there.  I also placed an order for 100 Senkos, I just need to decide on some colors... I will get a few cranks in white and orange as well as a few more jigs.   Any particular spots you would recommend?

I would recommend senko colors, Motor Oil Red with Red Flake, Green Pumpkin with any color flake.

Orange with black back crankbaits where hot for stripers off of points.

It would depend where you launch from, but any tule or structure points is a good start. If it windy try to stay in some coves, the bass will group up.  I am not familiar with names of points but the delta is huge you really can't go wrong with a particular spot.  If it looks like a bass holding place most likely there is bass.

Also bring some spinnerbaits, white color, I know a lot of the guys caught some of there bass on spinnerbaits early in the morning. Sorry I couldn't help you with location, but the whole delta holds bass.  Remember to mark a way point when you find a bass.

When are you going up? I'll be there next week as a marshal for the Duel in the Delta.

If you haven't left before I get back I should have some current info for you.

Booking a guide at this late date probably won't work as they are all swamped this time of year.

Try some of the flooded islands, Franks Tract which everyone beats on,

Mildred or Mandiville for a start. Also in the marina's they like to make beds by the dock pilings.

PM me before you go and I'll see if I can give you anymore tips.
