Super User fourbizz Posted January 19, 2007 Super User Posted January 19, 2007 I'm gonna be in seaside oregon for a week at the end of june. What is the smallmouth fishing like on the columbia around there. I can travel up river a little if need be, but not too far, and I will be stuck on shore most likely, although i might take an inflatable pontoon w/ trolling motor. I'm trying to figure out any fishing prospects around there at that time of year. Any help, even other species will be greatly appreciated. But I got a yearning for them chunky smallies! PM, if youd like or throw it up here. Thanks Jay
WCCT Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Glad to hear you are coming up to the Northwest I have not fished that stretch of the Columbia, but I know quite a few people that do. The smallmouth fishing can be awesome anywhere on the big river. Cranks, dropshots and split shot 4" lizards are always right at the top of my list. Give me a shout a little closer to the date, and maybe I can make the drive down there. It is about 3-4 hours away, so not that bad. At least it would get you off shore and into a boat. One thing is for sure though, the wind can really blow down the river, so if you do get out on a pontoon or float tube, make sure you are in a protected cove
Super User fourbizz Posted January 21, 2007 Author Super User Posted January 21, 2007 Thanks alot man! That would be awesome, I'll give you a shout as the date gets nearer. Jay
fishintime Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 the lower columbia is a great place to catch smallies. but it is hard to fish from the back. your best bet from the bank is up by rooster rock. alot of the shore line is rock and we now that smallies love rocks. but down lower in portland are it is grassy and weedy unless you can get into an inlet or a cove and just trow jigs or wacky worm. good luck let me know how you do
Super User fourbizz Posted June 7, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 7, 2007 Well guys the date is near! I will be flying out on the 20th of this month and flying back on the 27th. I'm stoked for the trip, although fishing is not the primary focus. I talked to an artist from seaside at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation show and he said he could hook me up with a float trip with a guide buddy of his. I am mildly receptive to this, but have not made reservations and am unsure of the particulars. I am planning on taking a spinning rod and baitcaster and a somewhat limited supply of tackle. Just curious as to what kind of bite/conditions to expect. Also wondering if anyone lives nearby that would like to fish. Does anyone have a favorite bass guide? My one way radius will be about 50-75 miles, and if I am solo I will be banking it. Any help would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Thanks Guys. Jay
bpm2000 Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Ive been reading reports that tubes and lipless cranks are pullin' em in right now.
Super User David P Posted June 8, 2007 Super User Posted June 8, 2007 Goodluck four, have a good trip. Oregon is great, I fished up there about 4 years ago with some success but not bass. Steelhead and big shad and such..
Super User fourbizz Posted June 28, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 28, 2007 Man...the northwest is lame!
Super User David P Posted June 28, 2007 Super User Posted June 28, 2007 Man...the northwest is lame! Not many places can compare to what we have here in NorCal my friend. Did you have any luck?
Super User fourbizz Posted June 28, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 28, 2007 I caught half a dozen bass in some crap hole pond. Dinks. Did get out after some sturgeon however. Boated 5 or six between 40 and 50 inches, and my uncle got one to the boat that was in excess of 7 feet! That was cool. You should have seen her go airborne... she cleared the water by at least 4 feet. KERSPLOOOOOSH!
bpm2000 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Man...the northwest is lame! haha not quite cali im sure, and most people up here are hung up on salmon/trout/steelhead and ocean fish. We do get our occasional nice fish though. So you didnt fish the columbia for bass then?
Super User fourbizz Posted June 28, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 28, 2007 No, as near as I could tell, the closest bassable water was almost two hours from where we were staying, which was on the coast, about an hour southwest of portland. I had anticipated clear water smallies in the rocks and packed a limited amount of gear accordingly. I got stuck fishing lakes and ponds just in from the coast and they were all very shallow with very dense lilly pads. Not where you want to be with a ML rod and 20lb braid >. Its ok, Im home now, going to one of the best lakes in the area tomorrow for a giant, then to Clear Lake on Sunday for as many 4lbers as you can shake a rod at Now if my plan just comes together
tnj8222 Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 funny you say its lame but we have a world class smallie river here. i knw i know that still doesnt compare to clear lake. you lucky basta**d haha. atleast you got to play with the sturgeon.
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted September 2, 2007 BassResource.com Administrator Posted September 2, 2007 FLW is hitting Tri-Cities in a few weeks. Should be good fishing. Should see a lot of 5+ pound smallies each day. Too bad the WDF won't let them fish for largemouths, as there's a good population of them there too.

That's not how it works around here. Spend some time being positive and adding something worthwhile to the discussion before you start picking a fight.
