i'm not hearing about nearly as many big bass coming out of cali in '09 as i have for the past few years. i have heard that a combination of fishing pressure, drought, and ridiculous regulations have made it the fishing difficult at best. but i don't know. and maybe i'm wrong. maybe there's just as many big fish being caught out there and cali bassers just aren't talking anymore. i know a lot of them are pretty secretive anyway.

just wondering what's going on out there these days. i hope i'm wrong and the fishing is still what it used to be out there. i'd hate it for the cali guys, especially my friends on the board, if it's declining. :-/

It's very difficult in SoCal to fish a variety of lakes, due to low water conditions and the qaugga mussel issues. Your boat get locked onto one lake like Casitas for example and you can't fish anywhere else without going through a 21 day quarantine period.

Fishing is good overall, typical feast and famine cycles, related to fishing pressure and water levels.

And, there are still some lakes that won't allow private boats on the water due to those pesky little mussel's..Although I don't have a boat, just thought I'd let you guys know.

As for the BIG Bass, well, I've never hooked one up that weighed over 6lbs...so I couldn't tell ya... :-[

Fishing sucks up in Nor Cal compared to last year.  The water conditions are actually a little better right now than last year, but last year things were stable.  The weather and water levels last year were very stable therefore we were able to find steady bites and patterns.

This year we have had 100 degree weather, then it will storm and dump 3 inches of rain, then nice again.  The water levels have been raising ALOT.  I'll use 1 lake for example, Folsom.  We just had a storm a couple weeks ago that dumped LOTS of rain, and raised the lake 10+ feet in a few days.  Earlier this year we had a series of storms that raised it 30+ feet in a couple weeks.  As we all know, rising water level is tough to deal with.  While this is promising for this summer, it made EVERY bite that I was on last year, non-existent this year.  Water temps have been on a roller coaster.  60 then 70, then back down to 65, then up to 78... it's insanely stupid.  I gave up on bass fishing until things stable a bit.

I fished a lot harder this year than I did last year and got nothing in return.  So far this year I have 0 fish over 5.  Last year at this time I was pushing 15-20 over 5.  Last year I had 20-25 swim bait fish at this time, this year I have 1.  Last year I had a 9.1 and a 35.1# solo sack by now, this year my biggest is a 4.5 on a hudd.  It's been rough and I only know 1 person that is doing better this year than last.

I think that once the weather and water stable more, the summer nighttime bite will be GREAT.  A Lot of the lakes have trees in the water now, something we haven't seen in years.... so look for some good reports later this year.  I've actually been resorting to trout fishing for the last month or so, but come June, I'm becoming nocturnal and will start night fishing ALOT.

I've become very discouraged and sold a lot of my gear ( Swim baits, rods, reels, etc) but I'm hoping that the summer is treats me better than the spring.  Only time will tell

If you were bustin up 15+ lb bass on a secret spot would you make it well known? i certainly would try to catch all of the sows i could before letting that news flood the area. ;)

Well, I can say this..you don't see any fish reports, or at least I don't, where some says they caught a dd bass. So I guess most if not all folks are keepin the catches on the lowdown, can't really blame them, what with all the pressure our so.cali lakes get, and not to mention the poachers ect.

All I can say is: SCREW THOSE ENVIRO MARXIST TYRANTS WHO ARE BASICALLY CHASING US OFF OF OUR OWN LAKES DUE TO "AQUATIC HITCHHIKING SPECIES!"

Just don't like it when government interferes so much in our lives that they harm our fishing opportunities by closing lakes to the public that owns them.

I haven't landed any over 10 this year but I have hooked and lost a few. I have caught several fish in the 8 pound range in nor-cal and so-cal. Maybe I've just been lucky  ;)

I am both confused and envious. I understand that that you folks are limited to what lakes you can fish due to invasive species but most weekend warriors are. We have to fish based on the limited time we can spend. You folks still have tremondous opportunities for double digit bass, whereas in the Upper Mid- West we have no opportunity except for once in a lifetime. You can easily go out and caught a 25 lb bag limit. We have to work for it. I wish not to condemn but would like to open your eyes. Count your blessing guys, go out and enjoy the time on the water. Enjoy the peace that this sport offers when you take time to accept it, good luck your next double digit bass is a cast away. I do not regularly have these opportunites but I do embrace the solitude and peacefulness of time on the water.  ;)

I wish someone would Tell me how to catch a 25lb bag..Easily.

No offence, but some of so.cali's best have a hard time gettin a 25 lb bag and that's on some of our best lakes.

I can usually get 2-4 lb'rs..it's the dd girls that I'd like to catch.

Then again, maybe I'm just lousey at fishing..

No, it is just that people in the rest of the country don't realize how small and pressured our lakes are.  We do have big fish out here but they have all been caught numerous times and to get them to bite is not an easy task.  I've had my share of 25lb sacks but non of them came easily.

What I really meant but did not properly state is you have the opportunity for a 25 lb bag. We have a very limited opportunity. The largest lake I have readily available is 2500 acre. Not big based on others. We have pressure but not year around. At times we can have 75 boats on a 200 acre lake which seems pressured to me. I usely fish on a 300 acre lake with maybe 16 boats but still will never see 25 lbs unless I catch 25 fish.

that is one reason i fish from a float tube no dumb inspections

Here in Colorado we now have inspections even at non municipal reservoirs, but since I use hand launched boats they don't have to be inspected.
