txguy87 Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Hey everyone, I am from Texas and will be going out on lake powell here in a month or so. I was just wondering if anyone has anyadvice on types of lures to use there. I know they have walleye and striper there and would be interested in catching some of those. I am also interested in catching some smallmouths since we dont have many of those in texas. I am currently using a medium action 6'6" castaway spinning rod with a shimano sahara 2500 spinning reel if that makes a difference. Any help would be appreciated Quote
rfrazier Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 You're probably going to want a heavier setup for stripers.. but light setups can be fun. There are some pig stripers in there. Used to go houseboating there as a kid. Probably the first time I went bass fishing as well.. My brother wrapped a hook 3 times around my head and up my nose on his backcast. LOL. ;D I'd use some super spooks to go after stripers. Quote
txguy87 Posted May 31, 2008 Author Posted May 31, 2008 Ouch man that sounds painful We will be doing the houseboat thing as well. I have heard it is really beautiful so I am excited to go. I will look into getting a beefier setup and going after some stripers. Thanks for the advice Quote
Gungle Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Hey Txguy, Take a look at this web site; wayneswords.com you will find all the information you need. There is a forum there with a ton of good info. Your bass tackle will handle anything in the lake. Stripers rarely go much over 12 with most in 5 to 8 lb range (too many fish to grow much larger). Be sure you have a couple BIG ice chests with some ice in them for stripers. There is no limit on them and the park service encourages everyone to keep all that you catch. If you hang them on a stringer they are hard to fillet, ice works much better, especially in that heat! You will have the time of your life! Post some pics when you get back!!! Cheers, Gungle Quote
txguy87 Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 Thanks for the ice chest tip. I will be leaving on tuesday for the lake and I will make sure to take plenty of pictures Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 31, 2008 Super User Posted July 31, 2008 This time of year bass fishing is tougher. They will be on the deeper rock reefs feeding on crawfish and young shad. Heavier jigheads up to 1/2 of an ounce tipped with a 4 - 5" hula grub are your best bet. Striper and catfish fishing is good in the mornings and evenings. Just find the shad schools and stripers under them, and then drop down a half of an anchovy. I use 6 - 8 pound test for bass and 12 pound for stripers. Quote
NewScreenNameAdvised Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Hey TXGuy, Powell is the most awesome place on earth. There is so much more to it than just the great fishing. You are going to have a blast. For smallmouths...hulagrubs around follen rockpiles (rockslides and such). For stripers...I never fail with a green light and anchovies. It's best to do this during a no moon phase so tha tyour green light has more impact. Quote
