Hey all~

Just became a new member today because I have been fishing the Columbia as of late a little bit and seem to be doing something wrong. I have been launching out of Kalama and fishing only down to scapoose bay. I was wondering if someone was familiar with the area and could give me some pointers/tips for this particular area. I appreciate your time!!

I'd like to add to my previous post that I have tried many things, small 3/16 to 1/4 oz spinnerbaits, drop shots, carolina rigs, cranks, texas rigs, jigs, crawfish lures, jerkbaits, tubes etc. I've fished shallow and deep, in current and out, off drop-offs and in flats. I just can't seem to figure out these tidal bass. Am I the only one that is having trouble? I'm heading out again this weekend so am searching for some last minute advise.

i didnt know that the columbia had bass in it!!!! i have never river fished for a bass. i fish the lakes around Florence, OR: Tahkenitch, Mercer, Munsel, Siltcoos (which i just found out this weekend has been pretty much fished out). i read in a book somewhere that oxbows are a good place to catch river bass. ya might wanna try that.... or take a trip down to Florence. it would be worth your time! i live in albany, so its like a 2 hour drive from here to there, but this will be the 3rd weekend in a row ive gone. my dad caught a 9 pounder out of Mercer last summer, and i had one on so big that it snapped my pole AND hung me up!

oh man its a world class bass fishing river. many many tournys there every year. mostly up towards hood river and the dalles.

look for current seems very close to deep water. or humps. tubes shoul be working awesome try outlaw gitter tubes which can be found at sportsman warehouse. yozuri lipless cranks and lv500 from lucky craft are awesome. a drop shot should always produce, try gobys from bass8baits. man if you ever want to get out send me a pm. i promise we will find fish. hope you like smallmouth left and right lol.

Best fishing is during an outgoing tide, but incoming isn't bad either.  Just avoid slack tide - move someplace elses.  These bass want current!

Look for wingdams and fish them end-to-end.  Tubes, cranks, splitshot and dropshot all work good.  Position your boat down stream and cast upstream, then hold on!

Also note - be extremely careful when you pull off the channel. You can hit a rockpile in a heartbeat in some places.

I know this post is very late in response.  I also had troubles locating smallies in the Kalama area.  I have fished several tourney's and spent a lot of hours in that area last summer ('07).  Glenn is correct, i have had my best success on the outgoing, may be due to PH of the incoming tide.  I finally narrowed the bait selection down to four.  I have had the most success with X-rap (XR08 silver) this is almost identical to the smolt in the river, if no success try the drop shot with a tube.  Hope you check this....
