cmatthews6485 Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 first cast i had one halfway in and spit my spinnerbait back at me 15 minutes later i had one break my line on the spinnerbait then no bites until my first cast with a shadalicious swim bait drag messed up the fish ran with the bait and jumped and spit it out because i couldnt set the hook, then later i lost that bait and no other bites i had bad luck this morning from the beginning Quote
SimonSays Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Good to meet you all, and good to see you again Sam. Started off slow, didn't get a hit until I went to the other side, gf called and of course I hook up. I went to pocket my phone and the fish decided to swim towards me the exact moment i took my hand off the reel. Eventually hooked up on a dink with a magic shad, and on my way out I got hit and landed another small one ~2lbs. Quote
Syppy Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Definitely a great ole' time. Was great to meet you guys. Wife and I had a blast. Most of it was off and on for me. got two good bites, but didn't quite complete the hook-set. Still learning this whole soft plastic thing, but they seemed to be hitting the Ika pretty good for me. Landed one decent 2-3 pounder, but he wouldn't hold still for the scale so it's mostly guestimated. Also got some pics of the few of us fishing from the the bank. I agree! When we doing this again?!! Reel_Kaotic Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 I thought you had left! We have to do again sometime soon. Quote
hookingem Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 This should definitely happen again sometime soon! I missed this one unfortunately :-/ (I hate being out of town) Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 @Sippi: Nice catch...better then mines...wait, I didn't land one! Quote
Prmetme Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I know this is a very very verrrrrrrrrrry old topic but will this happen again? I know people wanted to fish more than one lake so I figured that starting early would be probably be better. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Powhatan Lakes would be cool place to do it...have the option to fish either lake! It should serve well to small boaters and bank fisherman. 8-) Quote
s13john Posted February 10, 2011 Author Posted February 10, 2011 im down for a round 2 at Powhatan lakes Quote
fishindrew Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Alumabass, is there a boat ramp or do you have to put a small boat in from the bank? Quote
fishindrew Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 just looked at an aerial of Powhatan lake on Bing maps. I am not sure how old the picture is but the lake is dry. anyone know how old this is? you can get a pretty good idea of where the creek channel is. Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I agree, I'm for round 2! Never been to Powhatan lakes, love to fish a new location. Are fishing from the bank or are we using small boats? Quote
s13john Posted February 10, 2011 Author Posted February 10, 2011 their is a ramp on both of the lakes.... good enough for most jons Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 yes they have 2 concrete boat ramps withs docks...1 at each lake! they also have a fishing peir/dock on both lakes with some room to walk around the banks and along the dams. fishindrew, the dams gave way on the lakes like 4-5yrs ago and they have been rebuilt since and are both full of water and fish now!! I figured the guys with boats fishin alone can team up with a non boater and that would get few other guys off the bank. Also i have 2 canoes i could let couple people borrow if needed. The lakes are Electric only!! Trollin motors only! Should be tons of fun!! 8-) Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 also i forgot to say that larger boats like bass boats should also be fine putting in there the ramps seem wide enough for most boats....with boats and bank fisherman included maybe it will be a big turn out! Quote
Carrington Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 id like to see this happen at lake anna so i could bring my boat up. Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 If the fishing is good at powhatan lakes, I'm all for going there. I have a jon, so there sounds fitting for me. What type of lake is it...flat bottom, aquatic plants, laydown tress, underwater structure, deep? How far is it from Richmond? Quote

WdyCrankbait Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Sorry, I submitted before I readover. I think it is about 30 miles west of Richmond, right off Rte. 60 after it narrows down to two lanes. Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 How's the fishing there, especially this time of the year? Would I be able to take trailer? I read on DGIF that rooftop and canoes, however looking the area on google maps, there were dirt roads leading to the upper lake with some cleared land to park a truck and trailer. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 It is one way dirt roads, espeically to the lower lake, kind of tight. The upper lake should not be a problem to put in at. As far as fishing goes, not sure, but I will tell you in a couple of weeks. Quote

What type of lake is it...flat bottom, aquatic plants, laydown tress, underwater structure, deep? How far is it from Richmond? Fishin is pretty good there...it has a lil of everything..it has brush piles, lily pads, laydowns, and wildlife has sunk a pile of xmas trees lastyear in both lakes. There is alot of standing brush, saplings from where bottom of lake started to grow bf they refilled it again. The lake probably does not have much deep water structure but you can fish the creek beds deep. I think it would be best to hold off till late march early april or wont be no vegetation to fish and fishin should pick up by then. Its about 30-40min ride depending what part of Richmond. Quote

I read on DGIF that rooftop and canoes, however looking the area on google maps, there were dirt roads leading to the upper lake with some cleared land to park a truck and trailer. there is plenty of room to get a truck & trailer in either lake...I have full size 4 door truck with 14ft grizzly boat on a trailer and put in easily on both lakes! At each boat ramp area there is plenty of room to park and turn around for the most part. On bottom lake you just dont want to go past the ramp with a boat as it does narrow down to a tighter driveway...mostly for guys fishing off the banks but you can still put boat in bottom lake. And as far as fishing the lakes....i would hold off till late march early april to get some vegetation going on and fishin will be prime around that time anyways! Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Ok, thanks. I may just hold off for a few weeks for some of the vegetation to grow. Sounds like a promising location, plus it'll give me the opportunity to fish somewhere new. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I will be out there next weekend for shore! Not sure I will get anything, but I gotta try! Quote
