Pikesnogle Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Hey All, My Fraternity takes an annual fishing trip dubbed the "Beermaster's Classic" every year. Last year was to the John Kerr d**n/Reservoir in Southern Va. It was tough going, water levels were low and the fish were spread out with catches few and far between. I suggested a river float for this year, thinking that we would have a little more luck. I know a lil more about river fishing than reservoir fishing. Reservoir fishing is tough going, especially when you don't know the reservoir at all. But I wanted to ask around and see if any of the guys or gals knew a good place in the area (Most of us reside in Loudoun County & Fairfax County) to get a cabin or something of that nature and float a river for a long weekend. Maybe and outfitter that rents canoes or kayaks and take you a few miles upstream and let you float back to their outfit. I've been looking around for such a place for a while now with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks and good fishing this coming season, Snogle Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 There are a bunch of guide services on the james just have to search around. James River Fishing Guides Guide Service Appalachian Bronzeback Guide (704) 467-5993 www.appbronzebackadv.com Canoe the New Guide Service (540) 921-7438 www.icanoethenew.com Albemarle Angler (434) 977-6882 www.albemarleangler.com Hatchmatcher Guide Service (434) 286-3366 www.hatchmatcherguideservice.com Hunter's Outdoor Family Adventures (434) 247-9608 www.vaguidedhunts.com James River Runners (434) 286-2338 www.jamesriver.com/jrr1.htm Razorback Guide Service (434) 923-9305 www.razorbackguideservice.com Big Cat Guide Service (804) 690-3875 www.catchbigfish.net Red Eye Outfitters (434) 315-1253 www.redeyeoutfitters.com Appalachian Bronzeback (704) 467-5993 www.appbronzebackadv.com Fishing with Fly (540) 819-8293 www.freewebs.com/fishingwithfly New River Fishing (540) 674-4930 www.newriverfishing.com Also this can be done with out a guide and save $$...just get map of river and park one vehicle at the take out ramp so when you get back you will have a ride back up to the launch ramp to get tow vehicle while someone stays with the boats. We do it every year few times a year...We would float about halfway down our float and setup camp on island....then wake up next morning early and have fun all day floating down...some great topwater action early in the morning!! If you go to state website they have all the ramps and float info on there under james river section. Anything above watkins landing is great for smallmouth! good luck! 8-) Quote
Intrepid Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 if youre looking for a trip you can do in a day locally, you could try butts tube inc. right here in loudoun county. they offer guided fishing trips out here where the potomac and shenandoah rivers merge together. i think the sign out front says its free if you dont catch anything. seeing as how its beermasters, i dont know how they feel about drinking if yall like to involve alcohol. i dont think there is cabins, but the website says theyre offering camping this year. but to make a day of it wouldnt be so bad as youre close enough to go home afterwards and save some money. though there is a couple bed and breakfasts out here too i believe. or also you can look at a map and gather info of the rivers out here near harpers ferry and plan your own trip here is the link incase youre interested in checking it out http://www.btiwhitewater.com/ Quote
vegas679 Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Hit up Clorebros.com This is what your looking for. It's in Fredricksburg. They rent canoes for like $35. They have a few different lengths of trips. You all meet at clore bros. Pack all your stuff in the trailer and bus. They take everyone up river like 20 miles. You float down the river some small rapids. Depending on how which trip you do you can make it a 2 day trip or 1 day. If you do the 2 day trip you go like half way, and then camp on the side of the river. Camp sites are all over w/ fire wood already cut for you. Pack you canoes, w/ beer, camping and fishing stuff. You can do just about what ever you want, no one around to bother you. Just make sure the water level is high enough. Quote
NHBA Charlie Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Try Downriver Canoe Co. in Bentonville, just south of Front Royal. They rent canoes, take you upriver, drop you and you float back to their place. About 8 miles on the Shenandoah. Fishing is great for smallmouth and occasional largemouth. 100 fish days are not unusual. Web Site shows lodging as well. http://www.downriver.com/ NHBA Charlie........ Quote
