Richmond area

I've got to head down to Richmond to take back a buddies kayak and then was going to hit up BPS, then take the kids fishing. They are 5, so I don't size I want numbers. Of any kind of fish. Anyone know where to go around there? thanks.

I used to fish Innsbrook with nightcrawlers as a kid and I remember catching plenty of sunfish there. 

There's also several parks like Deep Run.

And if you want to make a drive to the country, my dad does well for sunfish at Powhatan Ponds.

Innsbrook is located about 20-30minutes from bass pro shops.  If you continue south on 95 past BPS and take 295 towards Charolletesville and then get off at the second exit for Nuckols Rd, you continue on that and turn right on Cox Rd and the lakes will be on your left.  I usually just park in the offices and have not had any issues.  If you need more help let me know.  Deep Run Park is in the same area as Innsbrook, and is a nice park rather than office complex.  Lots of trails and playgrounds and two decent fishing ponds.  If you want directions there shoot me a PM

To get to Deep Run from BPS (and putting you through Innsbrook in case you want to do some hopping...)

95 south to 295 towards Charlottesville.

Second Nuckols Rd. Exit.

Right onto Cox.

Go through Innsbrook and pass Broad.

Take a left onto Three Chopt.

Right onto Gaskins.

Right onto Ridgefield Parkway.

Entrance to park will be on your right.

I haven't fished that park since I was in elementary school and used to go over there with hot dogs and bologna for bait.  But like hoki said, its a nice spot.

Another close one would be Echo Lake.  But, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, I believe it was recently drained and has not at all recovered.

Just about any place as long as you have Nightcrawlers.

Innsbrook ponds are good and easy to find.

When you buy your Nightcrawlers at Wal-Mart pick up of the 2010 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia guide and look at all the places to fish that are listed in the back in the greater Richmond area.

The clerk may have to find one for you as many Wal-Marts have put out the hunting guides.

there is a pretty good little pond VERY close to BPS, on the same road even.  when you leave, instead of turning toward lewistown, turn the opposite direction.  it will take you into a little office/industrial park and there is a little acre pond on the right.  ive caught bass on every side and there is a nice little hole with bream near the road.  you have to deal with the reeds but its not too bad.

ive had the best luck near the little steel structure at the deep end.

Ben, I have fished that pond and got skunked.

Must have been a bad day at that pond.

I will go back and take your advice and hit the steel structure.

oh yeah, been skunked there many times myself

last time i just used a pumpkinseed lizard and a 1/0 and cast along the reeds... let it fall and hit the bottom then just bump it very slowly back to you. they love ANYTHING on the fall but the lizard really brought out a side of that pond i had not seen

got a lot of curiosity strikes with a pop-r too... same deal, cast along the weeds

the old standby for me at that pond is a texas rigged junebug curl tail, 1/8 oz bullet, and 1/0 worm hook. that one hasnt let me down yet

and the small fries really seem to like any kind of plastic shad or minnow run along the shore or down at the shallow end of the pond near the culvert exit

Bass, yes, it is a private pond but lots of guys fish it.

Give it a try.

I think that "steel structure" is the drain by the road.

Only problem is trying to cast to it and then cast along the weed line along the road (dam) side of the pond.

Yea Echo Lake was drained back in 2008 I think.  They restocked it with sunfish and other small fish in 2009 and catfish and bass this past summer.  I went out there a couple times trying to start my friend off fishing this past August.  I've seen some people catch some small sunfish but I seem to catch catfish after catfish after catfish on worms right by the dock.  Just dropped my line in and they just attacked it.  I've tried fishing at crump park and got nothing but another family was out there using bread and caught like a 1-2# catfish.  I then tried one of the lakes at Three Lakes Park and got nothing. 

I've heard of people who fished over at Innsbrook but haven't been over there myself.  I have a friend who works over in that area and he says he knows of people who drop off fish there.  But with Echo Lake out of commission I'm struggling trying to find a good place to go without a boat.

prmetme lake rooty at innsbrook is a good place to fish i always catch fish when i go there and recently caught a good 4lber and its a nice lake to fish without a boat

I agree, a great place to fish, easy excess, and friendly/save environment for children. You'll get good results with the most basic fishing techniques.
