Reel_Kaotic Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 Luck hasn't been so great for me out the chick lake near Eagle's landing. Maybe I should have launched from Ed's last weekend. Looking forward to some good bites this weekend. Thanks for the update! Searching for junebug color plastics. Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 @type be ben: Have you ever fished Diascund Reservoir, what's the fishing like there this time of the year? Quote
typed by ben Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 last time i fished there was when i was about 7 years old... caught my first fish there its a lot more like waller mill with logs and visible structure... relative to little creek which is bare and steep. clarity is about the same between the two so your color selection will be similar few years old article: http://www.virginiagameandfish.com/fishing/bass-fishing/va_aa055303a/ Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 The DCR sounds promising from the article, at worst, I can always pickup and head out little creek. Looking forward to get out and fishing a new location. Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted October 30, 2010 Author Posted October 30, 2010 Went out Diascund Creek this morning, had a great time. Most fish were holding around 10-20 ft of water, out on the points. Caught a 2lb pike on a crank and 3lb LMB on a drop shot rig. Fish finder beeped all morning as I travel around, most were suspended in schools deep. Looking to get back out next weekend. Here photo of the bass. Quote
Super User Micro Posted October 30, 2010 Super User Posted October 30, 2010 Nice catch. Diascund looks to be at full pool. LCR is still about 7 feet low as of this morning. The grass is dying back and the bare banks around the lake are nicely covered in grass. I was curious if I would see you there. Just in case anyone is wondering, Diascund, LCR, and Waller Mill are holding reservoirs owned by the city of Newport News. Newport News' terminal reservoirs are Lee Hall and Harwood Mills. Water from these two are fed into the treatment plants. Lee Hall and Harwood Mills are usually kept full by pumping water out of the Chickahominy. When its dry, during times of heavy water consumption, and when the flow on the Chickahominy slows, water is pumped to the terminal reservoirs from Little Creek. The reason is because Little Creek has the highest elevation of any of the reservoirs and Newport News can pump it out easier. Little Creek will be refilled over the winter with water out of Diascund, and through natural sources. Some people bemoan the fact that LCR has been pumped pretty far down quite a bit over the last few years. This time two years ago the water as 12 feet low. The benefit is that the banks around the lake become exposed and the underwater grass dies. Dry land grass starts to grow there. As the lake refills, it starts to cover this grass which stays alive well into the late spring and early summer. The sandy and pebbly substrate makes perfect bedding for bass and panfish. The clear water makes site fishing bass easier. These attributes make LCR unique among the Newport News lakes. It's a different animal from any of the others. Quote
typed by ben Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 ^very nice fish and good info on the reservoir levels. LCR is at least up compared to september. Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted October 30, 2010 Author Posted October 30, 2010 Thanks, you both. My pops choose Diasund over LRC, after I told him the main differences btw the two. Trust me, I'm not ending the year out without visiting LRC. Thanks for the info on LRC current water level and status, sounds like the fishing there will be a different challenge for me. Quote
fishindrew Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I fished at LCR on Saturday from 1:00pm to about 5:30pm with a friend of mine. We each caught 1 pike, I caught 3 small bass and he caught 2 small bass. the biggest bass might have gone 2lbs. It was the second time I fishing there. The guy at the check in desk said they are going to have an open tournament soon. I can't remember the dates but if you call up there he will let you know. Quote
Super User Micro Posted October 31, 2010 Super User Posted October 31, 2010 LCR will be open Fridays through Sundays all winter. This is the first year that I can remember that they have had an extended schedule through the winter. Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted November 1, 2010 Author Posted November 1, 2010 Thanks for the heads up, want to register for a fishing tournament eventually. Hopefully it's not winter by the time I make it out the LRC. Quote
