Tallent88 Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 today June 13 it got in the 90s and was sunny / overcast i went to Pocahontas state park to try to catch some bass it has a ton of pads, brush fallen trees, and looks like there should be monster bass everywhere i didn't catch one fish the 4 hours i was there i threw everything in my box threw deep in cover banks i feel like i tried it all. does anyone else fish there what did you use and did you have success any good spots i can try or anywhere else lake pond wise in the area to try all help is greatly appreciated Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 14, 2010 Super User Posted June 14, 2010 Didn't we have blue bird skies today with some high clouds? The bass went deep or were under the pads and other structure to get out of the sun and find cooler water. Drag a Senko or Zoom finesse worm over the pads. If you want, use a heavy tungsten sinker and let the worm fall in between the pads. But be careful as if you get hung up your will lose your bait. Did you throw a white spinnerbait or chatterbait along the outside edges and at any wood you found? Did you try the shaky head using a Swamp Crawler? A pink or white trick worm? A Mann's Minus One or like crankbait? Read about fishing pads and heavy cover and use that knowledge to your benefit. Quote
Tallent88 Posted June 14, 2010 Author Posted June 14, 2010 i threw along the pads with white and red , purple and silver, yellow, and a frog chatter along the pads and brush lines ,i also had the trick worms multiple colors on around under the pads and even tried the worms around heavy brush tried sinners chartreuse white along pads have no pink or white worms is it a must have ?i also have no swamp crawlers and what is the shaky head method i did tr a couple different crank baits white fluke have you ever fished Pocahontas ? anything of size there thanks so much for your input Quote
hookingem Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 my dad and i fish pochohantas all the time! summer mornings there the top water action can be insane! we went out last week and did okay shakey head and crankbait. fish the deeper sections near the dam. there are some hawgs in pochohantas my dad broke off a deff 7 plus before and weve caught multiple in the 3 pound class. its a decet fishery that doesnt get much pressure! give it another shot and have fun! i threw along the pads with white and red , purple and silver, yellow, and a frog chatter along the pads and brush lines ,i also had the trick worms multiple colors on around under the pads and even tried the worms around heavy brush tried sinners chartreuse white along pads have no pink or white worms is it a must have ?i also have no swamp crawlers and what is the shaky head method i did tr a couple different crank baits white fluke have you ever fished Pocahontas ? anything of size there thanks so much for your input Quote
Tallent88 Posted June 14, 2010 Author Posted June 14, 2010 when you go out of the dock which way is the dam ? what baits do you like out there and thanks a lot top water you use popers and what is a shaky head ?? Quote
hookingem Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 The dam would be to your right from the boat landing. My favorite topwater out there is deffinatelly the rage toad but any weedless frog that you can throw deeper into the holes in the lilly pads will work fine. the shakey head is a very effective technique. heres an article on it. the website this article is on is also a fishing forum just for the state of virginia. http://www.fishingva.com/tactics/bass/shakyhead.html when you go out of the dock which way is the dam ? what baits do you like out there and thanks a lot top water you use popers and what is a shaky head ?? SimonSays Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 I like to skip under the over hangs there and work the frog. There's some decent bass in there, I've pulled two ~5 lbers from there, and many 3's and 4's. <--- that was from pocahontas Good luck! Quote

racer894 Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 This may be a stupid question, but how do you get down to this pond? I have always wanted to go to it. Quote
Tallent88 Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 beaver lake you go down pass the dam on the left very next parking lot take a left stay to the left and walk the trail to the right about .2 miles down ad its there folllow the trail to the far side don't wast time on near side over fished and never caught one fish on that side so fish the opposite side tons of pads fallen trees lots of nice holes if your not catching there is a beaver hut down the trail its about a mile and a half down its a hike but you will definitely get a bit on a decent day tons of little holes on the way to the hut to stop and try Quote
Tallent88 Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 went to the swift creek part of pochahantas today not much luck there did catch a snarling turtle never seen one this big i had him hooked in the mouth also weird it was a 7/8 booyah boogie he made it loook tiny i thought i had a lunker it was all over the place i pulled him to the boat expecting a nice fish and it was a big old snapping turtle he jerked the bait out of his mouth and in the process he got it stuck in his hand lol he was safely released without losing the bait ;D luckily Quote
Tallent88 Posted June 30, 2010 Author Posted June 30, 2010 i was more worried about the 5 bucks he was holding in his mouth and hand never seen a turtle try to heat a lure ! Quote
Reel_Kaotic Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Any recommendations on what use in Swift Creek Lake, now that the water temperature and weather is warmer? Looking to get out there this weekend, and I must say, I'm a excited to hear what's being said in previous posts about the location. Quote
