Hi

I had asked this question in another topic on Carolina rigs, but only 1 person answered.

My question was "What lb test do you use as your leader when you Carolina rig? Do you use the same as on your main line? Also, do you use braid. fluoro. or mono?"

Thanks

I have heard to use a lighter leader on C-rigs in order to break off line at the knot if you get hung up. I would suggest using flouro for the leader to improve sensitivity but I dont fish them very much so I'm sure you'll get some more help.

Most probably the reason why you just got one answer is in the way you ask the question, if instead of: What lb test do you use as your leader when you Carolina rig? you ask in slightly more specific you would get more answers.

The answer is: it depends on a couple of factors.- type of cover & type of bottom.

Do you use the same as on your main line?

The answer: same as above

Also, do you use braid. fluoro. or mono?"

Well certainly I would not use braid as leader, the leader has two functions:

1.- To present the bait above and away from the sinker

2.- In case you hang up you break the leader

And trying to break a braid leader with you bare hands ............ I don 't think so. That leaves us with two materials, nylon and fluorocarbon ( which by the way, both are MONO ), the answer to that one is: use whatever you like.

So, the reason only 1 person answered my question was because I asked it incorrectly??

I thought my question was fairly clear???

I guess I'll have to brush up on my question 'grammar & etiquette'!!!

IMO, use flourocarbon, and use a size or two smaller than your main line(where I prefer braid). My personal setup is 20 or 25 lb braid mainline, with a flouro leader from 12 to 17lb flouro leader. It varies depending on water clarity, cover, and size of fish expected.

Many moons ago in the spring I would use a CR a lot. I do not so much anymore because I just don't like throwing them but, when I did, I used #20 as my main line and #14 as my leader. I like a mojo rig better in the clear lakes where I live. #12 test and a 1/4oz mojo sinker about 15-18 inches up the line. I like throwing Zoom Centipedes on them in Green Pumpkin or Watermelon. Good luck my friend.

I just started fishing the C rig last year, set up was 20lb braid w/ 12lb stren as the leader. Seemed to work well, but would like to try fluoro this year.

Here is how I typically fish a carolina rig

Main line  17-20lb line

leader depends on clearity but mostly 10-12lb flourocarbon.  I fish alot of clearer water thats the main reason for the flouro.  also clearer the water longer the leader.

The reason for the lighter leader is so if you hang the hook all you will typically lose is the hook.  I always use a heavier main line then leader
