azsamsancho Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Hi guys, I see there are some NoVa anglers here. I wanted to ask for some help as I am new to the Sterling area. What are good lakes, rivers, creeks in the area to do inshore fishing? I know the potomac is right here but never fished it as I do not know where I can go. I know a couple of ponds in the reston area -- Audubon and Thoreau. I have been to Thoreau but was really disappointed how shallow it was. The d**n area is barely a foot deep! And the rest of the lak seems to be private with houses all around. I am still to go to Audubon.. Also, I went to lake fairfax and Burke lake and both have not produced much for me. Maybe I need to be more persistent but still trying to figure out were the fish is. As for the potomac, I have been to great falls park few years ago and from what I remember the tourist trails were pretty high above the river. Where in the potomac can I go to fish that is close to sterling? I see on the map Nova Regional park, Riverbend park, and Algonkian park. Are those any good? Also since they are parks I am assuming they close at dusk, right? I am limited to shore fishing as I do not have a boat, but I am looking for a new personal best bass Any help would be much appreciated! Quote
slickdub Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Hey man I live in Reston too. I fished Lake Thoreau on 6-2-10 from the public bank next to the pool. I caught 1 dink, the water was really clear but very shallow. Kinda of disappointing. I also went to Newport Lake in Reston yesterday and caught 3 dinks on the public dock in the lilly pads. Im planning on going to Lake Anne tonight (barring the thunderstorms that they are calling for). If its not raining, come on by. I'll be on the bank that backs up to Wiehle Ave. The fish below was the biggest dink out of the 3 yesterday at Newport. He pounded a 4" chartruse grub weightless as soon as it hit the water. Healthy fish just small :-/ Quote
steveb1 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 By far, the largest and most scenic lake to shore fish in the Sterling area is Beaver Dam Creek Reservoir in Ashburn. Quote

Just watch out for the ticks! They are terrible out there! From what I hear the fish are moving deep now, your best bet will probably be fishing offshore structure. Quote

X100 on the ticks, I went early this season walked maybe half mile out and back and pulled 13 off of me during/after the trip! Be careful out there, they were ALL deer ticks. But the fishing is tough there, I see to have a tough time locating them. But when you catch one chances are it's a NICE one. Caught a couple four pounders outta there this year. Another spot to check out is the Potomac, pretty good fishing there. As well as Ashburn ponds there are quite a few here locally. Some with some BIG bass. -Snogle Quote

Goblin Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Hit me up. I do Audobon in a canoe. Usually get the same size though. Every now and then I'll catch a sweet 3lber. Anyhow, hit me up and we'll hit the local puddles. Quote
kidnikarus1 Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Lake Fairfax is pretty good. I caught 5 bass about two weeks ago. 2 under the dock and three in the stream on the otherside of the dam. Riverbend is good for smallies. HUntsman and Mercer are also good lakes with very little pressure. Quote
