dauberangler Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Dam Steve that first bass in the 2nd set of pics is a beauty! Quote
Bigs Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 Dam Steve that first bass in the 2nd set of pics is a beauty! It has some nice markings on it I noticed when I was holding it. probably something toxic , who knows. Im headed back out with Brent right now, launching out of pohick and fishing LHC, pohick and maybe a few other spots. The tide is gonna be goin out all day with low tide around when the the sun goes down. Should be interesting. Hoping I catch my biggest bass of the year today which would have to be over 4 lbs. Seems like everyone else has caught 5+ pounders this year except for me. I need to get in some kinda zone. Quote
dauberangler Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Let me know when you got some open space to fish it up. Im so anxious to get tear them up after all the drama with my car, I need to take it out on some bass Quote
Bigs Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Only caught 7 fish yesterday, spent 4 hours out there . My gf had the biggest fish of the day and her only fish but she was too shy to take pics with it. All of our fish came on a wareagle spinnerbait, best spinnerbait for the potomac imo. Quote
Bigs Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Oh and I went to Mallows Bay the other day , heres a pic of my first bass there ever. Caught on a red baby minus 1. Also caught a 13 pound catfish that day too on the same crankbait. The second pic is a lil football fish I caught that was the length of a two pounder but weighed about twice that, talk bout a short lil chunk. Quote
Bigs Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Steve, is Mallows Bay hard to navigate? When I was there the water was muddy but I bet when it's clear it's easier to deal with. I had a few nervous moments when I almost hit stuff trolling around. I was there when the tide was goin out and almost low tide. No wind made it easier to manage too. I would guess at high tide you gotta be extra careful . That is my fave spot I have been to on the river. Even tho I only caught 3 bass out there , Im sure there are tons more in there and some giants at that. It was just a cool spot to fish imo. Only 1 other boat out there in the couple hours we were there. Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Mallows Bay is an awesome fishery but you can really damage a boat there if you don't know the layout of the wrecks. The book "The Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay" is an excellent read and has several good layouts of the locations of the barges which has been very helpful when fishing the wrecks. During the summer you can have a hell of a time getting to the wrecks at low tide when the grass is really thick. There are a few really nice spots in there that hold some monsters but you need to expect to lose lures and don't try going in to get that $10 crankbait off that innocent looking wood. Quote

LHC - Bank Robber Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Ive fished there once or twice, never caught a thing, but the bottom, if you haven't already you might want to take a look at google maps, you can get a pretty good view of the wrecks Quote

I'll go back there at some point when I decide to launch out of Aquia, it took me 30 bux in gas just to get there and back from leesylvania which seems like a waste to me. Here's a pic of my first snakehead which I caught yesterday in mattawoman Quote

Bigs Posted May 8, 2010 Author Posted May 8, 2010 never heard of any ramp that costs that much to launch. I know leesylvania charges around 13 bux on the weekends and 8 bux during the week. I have an annual pass which is the way to go. Can someone chime in and maybe clarify ? What are the ramp choices in Aquia and how much do they cost ? Either way I rather save the wear and tear on my boat and outboard and launch much closer instead of makin a 10 mile round trip. Aquia is better fishing then anything further up north anyways, fewer snakeheads to deal with too from what I hear. Quote
Ldavis Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 If I remember correctly Hope Springs in Aquia is $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends to launch Quote
VABasser Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Yeah pretty sure they raised the price to $20 on weekends from $15 last year. Weekdays are still $15 I think. Absolute ripoff, I refuse to launch there. Further back in Aquia there is another marina you can put in called Willow Landing. Been maybe 2 years since I've been there, but at the time launch was $10. But if you are burning $30 in gas just on the run from Leesylvania to Mallows your outboard must get some terrible gas mileage Quote

I put 9 gallons in one of the tanks that was empty, went from leesylvania to mattawman, then to mallows bay and then back to leesylvania and used just about all the 9 gallons I had put in. It's a 1992 johnson 200 gt and it gets probably around 1mpg. Sux but that's what an old carbed 2 stroke does on a 20 foot boat. Quote
Bigs Posted May 11, 2010 Author Posted May 11, 2010 the water was crazy low all day which made me nervous bout crossing the river but I did it anyways. Paid off, me and my buddy both caught a few decent fish. Biggest was 4 pounds and a few 3 pounders along with a few dinks and a striper I caught in 15 feet of water on a crankbait. Quote
egolfer Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I don't even recognize the river with how flat it looks. You wouldn't believe the rollers coming through the mouth of Mattawomen on Sat and Sun. Quote

I rather avoid those 3 footers if at all possible. You were right tho when you said the water level made for some good fishing. If only I found the pattern and location I was in sooner before the sun set I could have caught alot more 3-4 pounders, maybe even a 5+. Always happens to me when I go out, I start off slow and then start to catch on, by then it's time to leave. Such is life Quote
Bigs Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 who's hittin the river this weekend ? My allergies are killin me or I would be going out myself. Quote
egolfer Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 Sunday is the LAPRBass out of Leesylvania. I will be launching from there. Quote
Bigs Posted May 16, 2010 Author Posted May 16, 2010 I'll be at my moms birthday party or I would go and at least see the weigh in. Good luck out there . Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I have an open back deck tomorrow if anyone wants to come along. Quote
