Bigs Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Got to fish the river for the first time this year and had a blast. Fished Mattawoman between fire island and trash point for the most part. I caught over a dozen bass out there from 3:30-7:30 pm. High tide was around 6:30 or so. Caught a couple that were just right at 4 pounds at slack tide. Most came on a warbirds spinnerbait and a Daves football jig. My biggest fish all came on the jig. Got several 2 pounders on a crankbait and some more small ones on a fluke as well. All in all I caught them on spinnerbait, fluke, crankbait and a jig. There was no wind to speak of until around 6 oclock. Perfect ideal conditions for sure. Hopefully next time out I will get on some 5-6 pounders. Still not bad for my first time on the river in over 4 months. Anyone else gettin results on the river feel free to post up please. Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Go ahead Steve! Is that the spot we talked about over at Terrapin that one day that we both said we had hooked into nice fish at? Seems familiar. Those are some beautiful fish dude. Looks like you got it figured out for shore. All that anticipation to get out on the Potomac was worth it after all huh? I'm back out this am but hitting the shore over at the same place we fished last time we hooked up. Looking for some spawners but I'm thinking they might be a little shy this morning... we'll have to see. Be over there around 8:15 if you're interested. Great job though dude. I knew you'd get on em'. Congrats on a heck of a day. Quote
Bigs Posted April 13, 2010 Author Posted April 13, 2010 I only wish I had started throwing the jig a few hours earlier instead of an hour before I had to leave. And I was catchin my fish in areas where no one really ever fishes very much when I'm out there. It's somewhat overlooked. I always see guys flying by on their bassboats. I have been goin to this area since I started on the potomac last summer and its always good for at least a few decent bass. I really need to stock up on some more of those Daves tournament tackle jigs too. For 3 bux they are impossible to beat. I also need some paca craws in the bigger size to match up better with these jigs, I was using a baby paca and I think that hurt me a little. I'm pretty stoked to have such a good first river outing this spring and it can only get better. You really need to get a day off sometime so you can join me, or at least an early day off for half a day of fishing. Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 I fished Pohick on Sunday with my buddy Nick and we slammed them. Best producer was a red lipless crankbait but we caught fish on everything we threw. Chatterbaits, jigs, beaver, spinnerbait, and swimbait all caught fish. Best 5 would have been between 15 and 18 (we caught so many that we stopped weighing them after the first hour) and big fish was only 4.5lbs. I fished on Saturday with Teddy Carr in the Aquia region, my goal was to learn that area and I learned a ton. The cold front kept the bite down a bit but we still caught a lot of fish, biggest was a hair under 4lbs on a spinnerbait. The water temps had dropped 10 degrees from Thursday to Saturday but the warm weather Sunday really got them going. Now I leave tomorrow for a tournament at Gaston! Man I love the spring!!!! Quote
LHC - Bank Robber Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Ive been tearin up the 2lbish cookie cutter males, pretty much every where ive been (mainly in lhc) Finding them big fat females has been a little tricky, I was donin a lot better befor we got this little cool spell. Quote

Bigs Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 got out last night at 5:30 and got 2 hours of fishing in. The water temps were down to 63 and the bite sucked. Was I just in the wrong place or did the cold front really screw the bite up. I fished the same places that I fished a few days earlier and this time I only managed 3 fish all under 2 pounds > Headed back out today for a bit to try my luck in the 77 degree weather Quote
rondef Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Good Job out there Steve, looks like you had a fun day. Quote
AnglerNFuego Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Nice fish, Steve. I haven't been out to the Potomac this year but I'm itching to get out there. Quote

Bigs Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 went out today around 4 and fished till 7. Stayed mostly in the same small area in mattawoman.Water temps were 67 when I got out there and fell to 63 when I left.Only managed 8 fish. All they wanted from me was a senko today which I havent really thrown in a few months since winter on lake anna. The biggest was almost 3.5 pounds and I got several that were just short of 2 pounds and then a couple dinks. Nothing to get too excited about. Better luck next time I guess. I really do hate fishing at low tide. Quote
soccplayer07 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 I would take low tide on the river any day...and all day!!! Quote
Bigs Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 I would take low tide on the river any day...and all day!!! It's too easy to hit stuff at low tide. Yesterday I was idling away from a spot gettin ready to get on plane and I whacked something pretty good. Not sure what it was. So much safer at high tide to get from spot to spot. I also catch bigger fish at high tide for some reason Quote
soccplayer07 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 i was not referring to driving at low tide. good point. I always use my GPS and take the same course every time just to be safe. Low tide really stacks the fish up on the outside edges. my catch ratio is at least 5:1 fishing low vs. high. Quote
A.Do? Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 I LOVE lowtide. it keeps the bassboats back while us kayakers tear it up. Quote
dauberangler Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 So is low tide better for shore fishing? Quote
soccplayer07 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 no, not in my opinion. low tide draw the fish to outer edges while high tide pushes them up (shoreline too). Quote

For some reason I been havin better luck on high tide and slack tide so far this season on the potomac tho. probably just a coinkydink. Headed back out tommorow most likely and then next week off to the cold side of lake anna for 5,6 and 7 pound spawning bass. Full moon on the 28th, the bite should absolutely be on fire by then pretty much everywhere. Quote
