GLADES Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I will fishing there 7-11 Sunday morning. I will be fishing out west of the bend.If anyone else is going, give a shout out. I will be in the Tan/Brown Ranger 373. Quote
GLADES Posted May 2, 2010 Author Posted May 2, 2010 I caught 17 bass using white horny toads, wat/red horny toads, white skinny dippers, and wat/red trick worms. Most were 12-14". My big bass was about 4lb on the wat/red toad. I was fishing west of the bend and in the clear water north of the flats. When I was leaving the refuge, a guy fishing in the canal next to the air boat consession hauled in a 7-8 lb'er. He might have been using shiners. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 2, 2010 Super User Posted May 2, 2010 Sounds like you had a good day up there. I tried to do some offshore fishing and got pounded a bit by the 4-6 seas. Last night it was 2-3..... A bunch of topwater Bass sounds far better than catching a bunch of 12"-14" yellowtails... Quote
piscicidal Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Right on, Glades. In your response to my post Wednesday, you said you were going to throw some frogs out there. Sounds like it worked out for you. I love catching bass on those topwater frogs...for me 1top water frog fish = ~ 5 fish caught any other way. I plan on making a trip out to Lox later this week. Maybe post a roll call later this week, see who's heading out there... Quote
GLADES Posted May 3, 2010 Author Posted May 3, 2010 On the 4 lb bass, I let the toad sink on the side of some bull rushes(sawgrass stalks) for a few seconds. The bass picked it up and started moving slowly parallel to the shore when I hooked him up. The others were caught during the retrieve. What was interesting to me was the houdini dippers were not getting as much attention as the trixie shark(white) dippers. Yet the wat/red/pearl underside frogs were working better than the white ones. The water was very clear and the sun was on and off(partly cloudy). It was probably just a difference in my presentation. Been there. The BF tuna/king bite should be here soon.I love catching 30 lb BF on spinning tackle...a real blast. . Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 3, 2010 Super User Posted May 3, 2010 I was hoping for some Kings to roll through the chumslick. I didn't even make it out to the deeper reefs. I was heading that way and turned around. Dropped the anchor and hung just off of a reef in like 15-20 FOW. Fished there for like half an hour before I said screw it and went to play around in the bay. It wasn't a great day to be out fishing. Quote
GLADES Posted May 4, 2010 Author Posted May 4, 2010 It was definitely windy Sunday. A nice 10- 15 S / SE mph breeze is great for offshore fishing, but the gusting wind makes for a lousy day. I used to go ocean fishing in a 17' formula and I never liked the chop to be more than 2-4 ft. I would never go out in my current Ranger bass boat, so I am limited to the drift boat. My son and I will be out there catching the kings as soon as the action picks up.For now, it's frog time in the fresh water. Quote
piscicidal Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Went to Lox Saturday morning. Fished topwater horny toads until about 9:30. Caught four on the frogs with one pretty good one (~3lbs). Switched to worms/skinny dippers and caught another half dozen with one 4lber. Caught a few dinks on flukes after that...left about 11:00 as I had birthday party. Overall not a bad morning...five biggest ~12lbs and two huge mudfish that got the heart going a little bit. Quote
GLADES Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 Sounds like you were slaying em. The toads work good, but my hook up % is usually 1:3. The dippers are usually 8:10. I had a lot of side work to do this weekend so I never made it out there. Where were you fishing, in the flats? It has been pretty good there. I might head out to Holiday or sawgrass this weekend for a change...haven't been out there in a while. Any reports from the Holey lands? Quote
piscicidal Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Hey Glades. I've got a separate setup now for frogs that has increased my hook up rate a little bit. I've got a 7.0gear ratio, 7'6" MH rod with braided line that is exclusively for fishing frogs. The braid made a big difference for me. My hook rate has improved (maybe 50% now), but still nowhere near the rate with dippers/worms. I was out west past the bend...along the banks early morning, then in the deeper eel grass later in the morning. Quote
piscicidal Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Went to Lox yesterday. Another decent day. Fished ~6:30 - 12:00. Caught about 20. My buddy and I both got one nice fish (his pictured below). All the big fish came from the same spot. We noticed a bunch of bait fish getting hammered. We ran over there and within a half hour, we had two big ones in the boat and two others dropped off within 10 feet of the boat (one was easily +6lbs). It was pretty neat getting into a "pod" of big bass like that.... Tried five different spots, got fish pretty much at each stop. Frogs were going early morning then we switched up later the afternoon, catching fish on several different presentations. My last four trips out there, I've caught at least 15 fish with at least one 4+. Hope to keep the trend going this Saturday. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 13, 2010 Super User Posted May 13, 2010 Nice goin right there. Fishing sounds good at Lox lately. I really need to get up there one of these days and play around on that lake. Quote
