Snaggged Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 I used to canoe Goose Creek a lot...even Little River, the beautiful tributary of the Goose. I recently moved back into the area and found that one of my prime put-in places is off limits....namely the water treatment plant on Belmont Road. There was real good crappie/bluegill fishing just below the big dam, and a nice little run down to Route 7, including a cool class III rapid at the golf course. I know you can go way up river above the dam somwhere to put in but it's a loooong flat water paddle, done that too! I recently though put my canoe in just under the route 7 bridge ( some small riffles that are easy to re-navigate coming back up stream ). Some good opourtunities here for some floating and casting.... A ways down from the bridge there is a little 3'- 4' high or so dam that completely crosses the Goose.....i caught several nice Largemouth here just above the dam on minnows ( suspended under bobber ). I have run this dam w/ my canoe before but this time just kind of pulled it over and continued on.....there is a very nice, long rock garden rapid just before the River Creek ( ? ) golf course. This is as far up the Goose as bass boaters from the Potomac can go. Caught a vey nice Smallie here at the bottom of the rapid. I portaged my canoe back up the shore and made my way back up river to route 7...other than the aformentioned rapid and the little dam, it's pretty easy to head back up because there isn't much current at all ( except in high water! ) All in all, a great little adventure and good fishin' for those who have the right craft and don't mind a little exertion! wvuwhat Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 If you go up Evergreen Mills Rd. behind Brambelton and the Reservoir there is a bridge that crosses over Goose Creek a few hundred yards after Reservoir Rd. on the West side of the reservoir. About 3 years ago they had closed this down. But, a few weeks back I was talking to some people in Yak's saying they dropped in there, that it wasn't posted anymore. Not sure if the chain is still there. They had put in there and floated down the same way you are talking about and got out where my friend and I were shore fishing at Kipheart Bridge park, about 3/4 mile short of the river in Landsdowne. May be worth a look for you. I know my friend and I used to do well on the shore where they put in. I really wish I could get to the old bridge/concrete something or other that is off to the left of the bridge on Sycolin and it seems that is the closest point to put in and get to it. Quote

HokieDJ Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Anyone know if Kephart is doable with a Hobie Kayak? I been there but I forgot if I can drag the Kayak via cart to the launch to float to the potomac. Quote
A.Do? Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 fellow hobie kayaker?!?!? Last time I was at kepharts over the summer it seemed pretty shallow and rocky. That was only a small stretch of it and it was a little while ago so I may be wrong. I plan on attempting a float through there this summer so I hope its mirage driveable.... Quote
Super User Dan: Posted May 11, 2010 Super User Posted May 11, 2010 If you have a cart you can put a Hobie in at Kephart but you won't be able to go upstream, only down. Quote
wvuwhat Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I would just like to say. For the shore fisherman the new trail all down the Potomac and goose is amazing. Went the 3/4 mile from kipheart to the Potomac. Great fishing from wading to holes to cover all the way down. When you get to the river it's gorgeous not to mention golfers will like the view of river creek and the Norman course. Quote

Just put in 200 yards right, off the rocks at the entrance of Kip. You'll have great bass and black croppie fishing for as log as you want. Quote
HokieDJ Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Yes I have the Revo I bought this year. That's great to hear. I have fished the trail before and it was hit or miss but I did catch a nice 4lb'er by River Creek side though. Quote
