Fished the quan for a few hours this afternoon. temps ranged from 57-68. I was shocked to see the temps that high. 9 fish caught. 5 keepers.

Thanks for the update on water conditions man, I'm headed out that way to a place fairly close by that I know of today and was curious what types of patterns they might be on.  This helps.  I'm gonna bring my thermometer so I can see what it's like in the spot I'm going too.

Congrats on gettin' yourself a limit together.  Looks like we may have some early spawners this month after all.

I was out on the Occ Res Saturday with my son. It was cloudy early and took a lot longer to warm up than I expected. My little 5hp Eska Ebay special has stopped spitting water. Every time I stop I get a small cloud of steam. Once I noticed that I wasn't spitting, I only ran the motor for short ~5 minute spurts to the next likely looking spot, and gave the engine a chance to cool down.

I heard that the small Eska's (which I have the Sears version of) can actually run without the impeller working.(another poster on iboat said that Eska actually states this in early printed material). I felt the engine and it didn't feel very hot.

I don't know if this is true, and I plan on figuring out how to replace the impeller. It looks like there is one large machine screw and and one large bolt holding the bottom piece of the leg on just above where the propeller comes out, and just below where the water goes into the leg (screw and bolt facing upward toward the head). Unfortunately the large screw is a simple regular head and is stuck fast, and I can't figure out how to apply some real torque without stripping the head. On the couple of attempts that I tried, the screw driver slipped out of the slot and I can see that I have just started to strip the slot. One thought I have is to actually epoxy the screwdriver into the head of the screw. Once I have the screw out, if I can't get the epoxy off, its a simple task to get a machine screw replacement. Its a stupid design, they should have had two bolts instead of one of them being a screwhead.

If anyone has actually replaced the impeller on a 3 to 10hp Eska (or other small outboard in general) please PM me with any further info on the subject.

Any way, back to the subject of fishing, I asked the oldtimer at the rental desk what was working. He said that because the conditions are cold muddy high water, that I should try going all the way into the back of the shallow bays. He said the muddy shallow water gets a chance to warm up under the sun faster than the deep water and the bass like it there. He suggested white spinnerbaits and to even try a buzzbait. Tried what he suggested without much success.

The notion that revealing a pattern (baits used, depth, structure) without revealing particular locations (cove or creek names) in a reservoir that is thousands of acres is somehow giving away secret info is laughable. I am a member of this board to share and learn from others. After a trip out I try to post a report about what was working for myself or others I've fished with. If you feel that you experience is that highly "prized" your wasting your time in your day job and should turn pro.

I'm not going to agree or disagree with you, but yes, it does get very competitive and yes, there are many who keep "secrets"

Here is the reason I go bass fishing- to catch fish. Here is the reason I continue to go bass fishing- work my brain and to catch fish. No sure about the rest of you but the challenge is a big part of the game. It would stop being fun if I had all the info neede to catch fish just handed to me. I'm all about the free exchange of info, but I can make my own decisions and right or wrong I learn and apply that knowledge to my next outing. If you want good info, build yourself a good reputation of info exchange with your fellow anglers and don't expect something for nothing!!

I've found that every guide I talk to is willing to tell me exactly where and how they catch quality fish free of charge. So yes you can get something for nothing  ;) Take McCotter for instance, no ego from him and he will take time to talk to you even if he know's you arent gonna book a trip with him. I rather talk to someone like him then some arrogant old tourney angler loading his boat at the ramp who thinks he's too good for anyone. Reagrdless tho, you do pretty much gotta be out there all the time and keep up with the changes I guess,  no matter what info anyone gives you.

Oh hells yea. Got everything they have done as a group except that blacroc(sp) thing they put out, gone to 5 shows. They absoloutly kill it live. Soooooo much sound from two guys. You a fan?

absolutely. One of my favorite bands. I am a huge fan of the blues and most of their stuff is just raw, gritty blues-rock. I really like Chulahoma because it's the blues-iest sounding but I also like many of their other albums.

I fished the reservoir on Sunday afternoon and the bite was really tough.  Got skunked.  Water was really muddy with water temps around 64-65.  Worked the blowdowns with spinnerbaits...nothing.

bassslayer, was it pretty crowded?

Yes, it was very crowded.  The ramp area was packed.  Lots of recreational paddlers and johnboats out.  Didn't see or hear much of anything being caught.  Spotted lots of arches on my graph, but in deep water and suspended...couldn't get them to bite, though.

hey guys. im new to this site, and also the new owner of a 1996 bayliner quantum with a 120 hp mercury force on the back. i heard that the occoquan reservoir can only have 9.9hp. is this true? and if so wherecan i go to launch it. also does anybody know about launching in the occoquan river? thanks guys

Yes, the Reservoir has a HP limit. You can launch your boat but you wouldn't be able to run your big outboard, only a kicker (if you have one) or a trolling motor.

If you want to fish the river below the reservoir, you can launch from Occoquan Regional Park. The entrance is right off of Rt. 123 south of Furnace Rd.

Go to leesylvania park and buy an annual launch pass for around 130 bux. Focus on fishing the potomac since you dont have a 9.9 motor. You can drive straight across to mattawoman creek and catch bass on the regular. Good luck

yeah, I'd tend to agree (but I'd probably get the pass for Pohick/Occoquan River instead if that is closer) but I know the Rez has some big fish and it's a different type of fishing than the river. Some people enjoy fishing deep water and rocks. I prefer shallow and weedy

Occoquan River where Dan mentioned at the Regional Park has some good fishing.  So that pohick/occoquan pass may be worth it, it's really up to you.  Do you wanna venture across river (not that bad a trip but on windy days... maybe not so) or would be fine to be contained to the occoquan and the bays (belmont, occoquan, gunston, accotink, etc) and make the occassional run to the main river (potomac) if you are fully gassed up.

I know of some great spots on the Occoquan River that I could put you on if we get the chance to get out.  Most of them produce probably 8 - 9 months out of the year.

Hope this helps.
