wvuwhat Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 So a buddy of mine have been heading out a lot so far this season. We've mainly hit up the ponds in Ashburn and Round Hill. Nothing to write home about, but a few 2-3 pounders caught off some 3-5' x-raps. I'm looking to upgrade my rod/reel. What would you all suggest for waters around here? I think I'm going to step up to a baitcasting lure from my current spinning rig. Glad to meet you all and hope to be a "regular" on here. Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 10, 2010 Super User Posted April 10, 2010 Have you gone further west and fished the cement pond on the campus of Shenandoah University in Winchester? What about the pond along Route 17 in the Sky Meadows State Park? (Don't speed or they will get you) Other than for these two places in Clarke County and the City of Winchester I stay out of Loudoun County as the traffic is awful. P.S. Have you tried Beaverdam Reservoir????? Quote
wvuwhat Posted April 10, 2010 Author Posted April 10, 2010 Yes. Actually in my current inebriated state... I just bought an inflatable 4 person boat/raft rated to 840lbs. (edited, can't post links until 10 posts) I live a mile away from Beaverdam, so that is what this will mainly be used on. Any tips? I know there's a "bridge" underwater about 200 yards left of the "dock" they have there. Not really sure on what to throw out there, we've had good luck on spinners. Quote
shimmy Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 everyone knows about the bridge, so your gonna need to know more than that on that lake. It can be brutal if you don't know what your doing. Also look at Burke, Abel, Brittle, and Curtis. They should be accommodating for the boat. Quote
A.Do? Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 A few buddies and I were out on beaverdam today. The problem with beaverdam is that EVERYTIME I go there, it's windy. In an inflatable you're going to get blown everywhere unless you get yourself a trolling motor or ghetto rig a hammer as an anchor : haha. It was tough fishing but we made out with a few nice fish! pm me for pix and details Quote
drewmc34 Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 I have been out at beaver creek this past month 3 times. The most recent being this past friday in 30 mph winds, which was brutal. I did still manage to catch 2, one on a jig, and one on a swim bait (no size). The water temp was mid 60's. It is a tough little lake to fish. The people i have talk to have had some success with rapalas. I have caught the majority of my fish on jigs or shakey head. Although i did catch a nice smallmouth on a rattle trap a few weeks back. I'll be out there tomorrow so if you see guy in canoe w/ tm setup let me know how your doin. drew Quote
AnglerNFuego Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 Where do you park? Better yet, what location should I enter in my GPS? Found it. Mt. Hope Rd. Quote

I usually catch some fish, nothing to write home about, on X-raps out there. A buddy and I attempted to walk to the d**n from Mt. Hope last Friday, bad idea. All the trees are still down from the monster snow, we got halfway and said the heck with it and each of us pulled off 5+ ticks when we got back to the truck. "Boat" comes Tuesday. With a friend and I splitting the cost it was only 40 a man, so if it doesn't work out we're only out a few bucks. I won't have a problem just keeping it in the basement and taking it out on non-fishing excursions. New Abu Garcia baitcaster comes late this week, so I'm sure I'll have some serious practice to do. Maybe we can all get together at some point and see what we can do. Today, we went out to the lakes in Reston. Audoban (sp?), Anne, etc. No luck. Finally found a spot we were doing pretty well at and a group of 10 people with dogs just comes up on me and my friend and has their dogs run out into the water while our lines were still in. How rude do you have to be? I've been having pretty good success at all ponds/lakes with 3/8 oz. Mepps. Silver/Blue's. Quote

How rude do you have to be? Yeah, stuff like that has happened to me but at a place like Audubon or Anne I tend to just suck it up. It's the residents' that pay to maintain it and I'm not going to complain too much when I'm not technically supposed to be there. Quote
intheweeds Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Yeah, things like that happen all the time. I was at lake fairfax a couple days ago and the same thing happened to me. That is fishing in suburbia It sucks but makes it even sweeter when you catch a few. I managed to catch two yesterday under "suburban conditions". Good luck and fish hard Quote

I'd post pix and more details but i know the lurkers (I see you! ) are watching Quote

A.Do? Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 lol! Does your wife know about your fetish? jk! Quote
AnglerNFuego Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Caught 2 in 10ft of water, other than that it was it was tough outing. Both were 2 lbs caught on KVD Bluegill Swim Jig with Rage Tail Baby Craw. The water temps were at 69 degrees where I could see them hugging the bottom around 8-12 ft of water. Quote
Bigs Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 edited: Seriously tho, March and April are very windy months and happen to be prime fishing months too. Even my 20 foot gets blown around in 10+ mph winds. A powerpole is the best solution. Those of you guys fishing out of kayaks, I dont know how you manage out there unless you're using an anchor. Super User Dan: Posted April 13, 2010 Super User Posted April 13, 2010 that's why they're called lurkers..because they visit without making people aware of their presence... and glad to see we're still beating that same old horse... : Quote
A.Do? Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Andy, that's amazing that the water temps are up that high from last weekend! On saturday, water temps topped off at 62*. I'm glad you were able to pick up a few. Quote

mudkart Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Unregistered, anonymous lurkers are out there, and there are more of them than you think. Last year, I was talking to a kid I sometimes see at a local lake, and he mentioned a nice bass being caught out of the same lake. He said he read about it here on BR, and I realized it was my post. I asked him what his name was on BR. His reply was telling: "I don't post, I just read it to get spots." I don't think I've made any fishing reports on this site since. Your best bet is to use this site to develop a network of local fisher-people. Quote
