BassinBoy Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I like to fish frogs on braided line, but what other lures can you fish on braid? Are there any other good ones that work on braid? Thanks Quote
garry77 Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I fish jigs, spinnerbaits and my carolina rig is braid to the swivel witha floro leader.I've read others on here who fish crankbaits. So basically just about everything you can imagine can be fished on braided line. That being said clear water is not the norm where I fish so if your water is clear that may limit your uses. Quote
ohiobassmaster93 Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 for braid i fish jigs, worms, and stuff like wackyjig and shakyhead little things like that..but i never fish moving baits like cranks or spinnerbaits on braid.... Quote
Matt Jungblut Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 i have braid on ever rod no mono for me thank you Quote
Lavrax Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Ive used braid for the first time some years ago, since then i've never used mono on my reels.. Braid has no elasticity like mono, hence you can feel everything while you are fishing. With plastic lures ( t-rig, c-rig, weightless) you can feel the slightest touch on the lures. With cranks and spinnerbaits you can feel their vibrations, thus you can work them better in water. Best working lure on braid..is the jerkbait Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 1, 2008 Super User Posted April 1, 2008 Of course you can use any lure or technique with braid as you do with mono and flurocarbon lines. However, I use braid when I am throwing, pitching or flipping into cover and need a strong line to bring the fish out to the boat or when fishing in deep water. Remember, braid has no "give" to it so if you are throwing a crankbait you could rip the bait out of the fish's mouth. That's why we use mono for fishing crankbaits. But it is up to you so experiment with all three types of lines and decide which ones work best under what conditions. Let us know of your results. Quote
low_pro Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 i have braid on ever rod no mono for me thank you x2... Quote
BadKarma42 Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 All braid, all the time. Some would argue that in certain situations the fish can see the line in the water. Something to consider in clear water conditions. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 I used to use braid for everything, but as time went on I discovered that braid may not be the best choice for all situations. For example, I seemed to get much better action and maximum depth using Flouro. for jerkbaits. I also got used to using mono for topwater lures. I now use braid for only Carolina Rigs, Jigs, Frogs, and Heavy-Cover Plastics. I think it is a preference thing, because I'm sure KVD could out fish me using steel cable. Quote
Bass XL Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Most times it's frogs or spooks. But sometimes I'll use it with jigs. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted April 1, 2008 Super User Posted April 1, 2008 Braid is far superior to mono for jerkbaits and deep crank presentations. I also use it for heavy cover plastic or spinnerbait work because I don't like using 20 pound mono for any bass application (too thick to get a natural presentation. I use mono about 80% of the time, braid 20%. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted April 1, 2008 Super User Posted April 1, 2008 All braid, all the time. Some would argue that in certain situations the fish can see the line in the water. Something to consider in clear water conditions. That problem is easily fixed with a fluoro leader. Quote
snyper77 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 For years, I've had braid on every one of my Curados. But last year, I noticed that while throwing spinner baits and cranks, it feels like my teeth are about to rattle out of my head! That line sends all those vibrations back up to your hand. I want the FISH to feel them, not me. Gosh! It'll drive you nuts. So, a few weeks ago, I make a run to BPS. I asked several employees in the fishing dept which line is best for spinnerbaits and cranks. They said mono. You actually need some 'give' to the line, a little memory is good with those type of baits. Flouro and braid have little or none. The day I was there, many people were dressed like "pro anglers" with sponsor shirts, etc. on. One of them stopped and asked if I needed some help and I told him my my dilema too....and again, he said "mono is what you need". And he put me onto some Shakespeare 17# mono for only $1.50 (330 yds). I have no complaints. I strapped on a chatterbait and caught a 3 pound largemouth the next day. Boy, could I feel a relief with that mono while reeling in a chatterbait! My more comfortable. For all topwater, jigs and worms, I'd go braid. For spinners and cranks, go mono. Quote
ba7ss3in Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Love braid when fishing frogs and shaky heads with a leader. I use to use braide with a jig but not anymore. You can get a nasty cut if set the hook on a stump so be careful. Quote
BIG M Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I use braid for all lures, but I fish crank baits 90% of the time. I like the fact that I can feel every little twitch or bump of the lure. You will get you deep diving cranks to reach past max depth with 20/6 power pro. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 Today I use braided polyethylene (PowerPro) for "everything". Mono is SO yesterday Roger Quote
SPAZ Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 For those of you that use braid do you use any mono or fluoro leaders? Quote
Stringjam Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I use braid on everything - ESPECIALLY CRANKBAITS. Make a 100'+ cast with mono and crank down to the mid-teens and deeper and all you get is mush - I want to feel what that bait is doing, and all the more around deep cover. Plus, it has the strength to turn fish out of that stuff....8-10 lb. mono around a sunken cedar or hedge tree? No way. If you're having a problem with fish popping off - turn your drag down....that's what it's for. BTW.....I do use leaders - braid doesn't take abrasion from rocks and crank lips very well, so a short section of tough mono like CXX works great. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 For those of you that use braid do you use any mono or fluoro leaders? When I first switched over to braid I incorporated a clear leader (force of habit) Now I don't bother with a leader and haven't noticed any penalty. Naturally, there'll be days when bass fishing is slow, but that can usually be fixed with a tactical change, without incorporating a leader. After all is said and done, braid is "too good". It's tough to break when you want to break it (e.g. on a hopeless snag) and it's virtually non-stretch. As a result, there'll be more tear-outs, it can be a hassle to UNhook some bass, and there's a greater chance of rod failure. If you're concerned about any of the above, a mono shock leader will alleviate the problem. Roger Quote
Namistia Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 All I use is braid, but i also use about 18' of floro leader tied together by a double uni knot Quote
