I'm looking to finally put the kayak in the water next weekend.  How should I go about finding prespawn bass in Briery?  I'm not very familiar with the lake, and was hoping to make the best out of my trip.  Thanks!

With ice still in some areas, prespawn is quite a ways off.

I'll be trying to figure them out at Briery this weekend.

The last couple of times I have been there this year, the water was warmer at the North (dam) end near the ramp and handicap pier.

In lake areas look for suspending or bottom bass typically 8-15 feet down. Try some super slow presentations with big jigs, 5"+ senko/SK worms and possibly deep swimbait that you just leave in front of their faces for 30-45 minutes with faint twitches caused by the waves and ticks of the rod tip.

For creeks, find the slowest moving water and try pretty much the same presentations as deep as possible.

I'll be heading down there too but not for maybe another 3-4 weeks or so. I thought maybe by mid march they would be in pre spawn or will that still be too early. I need to find someone to come out on my boat with me that knows that body of water so I dont waste my time. How much will I need to rely on electronics out there ?

You gonna take your Stratos?

Steve, that body of water is just like any other body of water except for the trees, fish it as if they were not there. Whether or not you need to rely on your electronics depends on your fishing knowlege and how to determine where on a body of water to concentrate your search considering the weather and seasonal patterns. The most important instrument you will need is a thermometer.

I'm not takin my stratos, my gf has a 14 foot jon boat which Im gettin ready to put a 9.9 on. Just wondering cuz I really dont wanna have to put any good electronics on it if I can avoid it. Hence the question bout the electronics. I think it would be a waste of time to troll around all day on a 840 acre lake. For those of you non boaters out there who dont know, the trolling motor can wear your back and legs out real fast esp in the wind. Much better to be able to move around at 20mph then 5mph  :-?

This morning some ice was visible from the ramp at the dam and within sight of the mid lake ramp. This afternoon, most of the ice was gone. A lot of the lake water was around 36-38 degrees. I did find some 40-42 degree water after 2PM and some active bass.

I caught a couple in this stuff:

man wayne it must be awesome to to have that side imaging in briery. you can actually see all the stuff down their. so when do you think they will be kicking into gear i figured about mid march, but if we keep geting in the 50s in the day it might be sooner

John, that is actually the new down imaging upgrade available for the Humminbird fishfinders.  But yes, both that and the side imaging are pretty amazing.  I've got the same electronics on my boat as Wayne has got, the Humminbird 798c SI but I haven't really gotten a chance to try it out much.  As soon as the ice melts that will change...

Any of you that like to use big minnows for bass, this place is a top area for that presentation in March and April.

The horizonal depression is the Briery Creek channel and the vertical depression is the submerged Rt. 701 on the West side of the creek channel. It's under the powerline heading towards the upper end.
