mikesjet Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Hello everyone, My wife and I are planning a fishing trip this May to smith mountain lake. We have never been there and only reason we are going is I saw it on the bassmasters website. It is within driving distance for me at approx 450 miles. Is there anyone familiar with the lake at this time of year. I am guessing that it will be pre to in spawn time for the area. I figured lizards and jig'n'pig will prob rule. Any info will be welcomed and appreciated. Thank you, Mike Quote
Carrington Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 i will be going to virginia tech next year which is 1 hour from the lake so i have done alot of research on what works there. from my reading and studying shakeyhead seems to be one of the best lures to throw out there. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 7, 2010 Super User Posted February 7, 2010 Google Smith Mountain Lake Fishing and see all of the data that you can access for information. As to what to throw in May? Guys in bass club throw spinnerbaits, crankbaits, Carolina rigs, wacky rigged worms, Texas rigged worms, and jigs. In May the bass will be active so fish away! SML is a tremendous body of water so please get a GMCO map and see where you are going to launch and then map out a few square mile sections to try your luck. GMCO maps are excellent and you will see a lot of information to study before you arrive. Good luck and have fun with the jet skis and pontoon boats. ;D ;D ;D Quote
mikesjet Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 I am used to fishing around the Jetfleas and pleasure boaters. I fish Raystown lake in PA primarily, full of them. Thanks for all the info. I will doing more concentrating on parts of the lake instead of driving around. I only have a Mod V with a 60hp jet on it. 30mph tops and alot of fuel burning to do it. Quote
Carrington Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 btw i have known people who live out there and be careful because they have told me when the weather gets bad the waves and current get really bad. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 11, 2010 Super User Posted February 11, 2010 Smith Mountain Lake has enough coves and creeks in different directions that you can always find places to fish without fighting wind waves. If you want to fish for smallmouth, use the marina where the Elite tournaments launched from and fish Craddock Creek. Quote

Pitchinkid Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Im trying to FBL to put me up for a few days this year and go down and fish it with him. I havent been there since i was 5. Quote
Red Bear Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 i go to SML several times a year. there is definately some nice fish in there. i am most familiar with the craddock creek area myself. frequently ive seen bass just swimming around in schools. im hoping to go next month, if not definately in april, and again in may and june. things seem to get real tough in july and august for me there though. May is probably an excellent time to go and there should be a good bite. Theres a million docks and youre allowed to fish them, also there are a bunch of rock walls bordering the shores in the coves. i wouldnt limit your tackle to thinking only a couple things will work. ive thrown my whole tackle box at some of the bass in there and the only thing they would even chase that i had would be something like a crickhopper Quote
Bigs Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I live in VA but have yet to go and fish SML. I have heard its clear water tho and beautiful. Wouldnt be a bad idea to stop in northern va and fish the potomac for a day also. You can launch out of leesylvania state park and goin 30mph you will get to mattawoman creek within 5-10 minutes, no need to go anywhere else really. Mattawoman will be loaded with action during may. Some of the best bass fishing you will experience on the east coast. Quote
mikesjet Posted February 20, 2010 Author Posted February 20, 2010 Wow, thanks for all of the info gents. I havent looked at this thread in a while. I thought it was dead. Any way thank youfor the tips. Quote
