bocabasser Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 fished lox yesterday from sun up to noon and stroked them. fished west and ripped lipless crankbaits over the eel grass. big fish was easily 6 pounds. 5 best went 20 pounds. i also fished the north canal and saw tons of beds. no females were locked, but there were easily 100 beds in a half a mile stretch. soon brothers---soon. mattd Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 bocabasser, I have an 11 foot jonboat and have been a little hesitant to fish at Lox. Would you think it would be OK or are the gators too aggressive there? Quote
Southflangler Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 It might be OK but some of the gators can be a little loco. Quote
mattd Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of! I grew up fishing in Mississippi and we had a few gators to contend with there, but nothing like it is down here. I just have to give it a shot and hope for the best. No guts, no glory... Quote
bocabasser Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 matt, don't sweat the gators man. if you leave them alone, they wll leave you alone. if you do go, just turn the corner and start fishing that open water flat. you will start catching them instantly. let me know when you decide you are going. Quote
mattd Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Will do. We should be getting out there pretty soon. Thanks for the replies. I've driven out there to check it out and liked what I saw. Anything different than fishing the canals will be a welcome change. Quote
bocabasser Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 matt--i went out today from 3-5:30 and caught around a dozen. i went west and the biggest was 3 pounds. i decided to fish the open flat right by the ramp and i banged a 5 pounder on a dipper. i also saw a ton of beds in the north canal. let me know when you go and i will try to meet you out there. later bro. piscicidal Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I plan on going to Lox, Tuesday. I will likely be on the west end of the south flat. I'll let you guys know how I do. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted February 1, 2010 Super User Posted February 1, 2010 One of these days I need to make the time to go out to Lox and check it out. Never fished it before. Quote
SoFl-native Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Caught 23 on Saturday but only one over 3. The week before we caught 32 with a 5.5 and a bunch of 3's and 4's. Water temp was down like 2 degrees this weekend. Word must be out because every week there are more boats. Quote
piscicidal Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I went to Lox this morning from 7:30 - 11:30. I was a little disappointed having done pretty well out there recently and reading some of the good reports here. I caught four, dropping off maybe another four. I spent the first hour throwing horny toads...didn't even get a follow. Afterwards, I ran west and worked the eel grass flats with worms/skinny dippers...caught two and broke off something very big (hope it was a mudfish...snapped my 12 pound mono near the reel). Later worked around the cuts with various plastics...nothing. Fished near the spillways with shakey heads/senkos and caught two. Finished up on the flat near the landing throwing everything in the box...nothing. I was going to try the N-S canal but ran out of time. Perhaps the fish are moving up onto the beds? Maybe the good fishing on the flats recently was the fish putting their pre-spawn feed bag on? Or maybe they're still going on the flats and I just really suck... ;D Anyway, interested in hearing other reports... Quote
SoFl-native Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Eel grass was the ticket for me. They have been in there and biting for almost a month now so it is probably tapering off. I think there was a pretty good spawn with the last full moon. Quote
piscicidal Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I fished Lox yesterday. Went out myself and did a lot of running, trying a bunch of different areas. Took awhile, but I got locked into them later in the day, and ended up catching 14 total. Caught 8 of those between ~2:00 and ~3:00. Good size also...One solid +4 lber and several 3s. I would have weighed 15lbs with my five biggest, easily. Took awhile to find the presentation/speed/location, but once I had it dialed in I started ripping them pretty good. Of course, once I had the pattern, I was out of time and had to go... Quote
