hokiefisherman93 Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Does anyone do any trout fishing in the streams out by the blue ridge or anything? I want to head out there, but I have never done it before. Quote
NewAngler Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Have not gone, but would like to. Got a new fly rod that needs a workout. I'm down to go as well. Quote

NOVA Angler Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I fly-fished for trout quite a bit when I was at Tech. Usually hit the stocked streams but every now and then would hit some creeks with wild trout. Here is a link to the stocking schedule for the rivers and creeks in VA. http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/stock/ Go to the archive to see when streams you plan to fish were last stocked. Not sure what SNP means otherwise I would try to help more. Let me know when and where you plan to go. If it's within a couple hours of NOVA, I might be interested in going. Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 my apologies... SNP is shenandoah national forest. thanks for the link and when i head out i will certainly give you a shout. i believe new angler was interested too so maybe we could get a trip together Quote
NOVA Angler Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I have a buddy who lives outside of Harrisonburg, VA. I'll email him and see what he recommends as well. I haven't fly-fished in several years. It would be nice to get the rod out and do it again. Quote
NewAngler Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I'm down. A day trip, or a weekend hike? I'm down with either, wife permitting.. I just tried my fly rod our today to get a feel for it.. I need some practice. Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 i would be down for anything weather permitting. do something beginning of february if anyone is interested. Quote
scottb123 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Hey NOVA Angler, what streams did you trout fish when you were at Tech? I'm a student and usually head to Craig creek, and throw little Mepp's right where the paved road goes to a dirt road (~8 miles past the Skeet shooting range, if you know where I'm talking about.) Also, did you ever fish Pandapas pond or Poverty Creek? If so where did you go, and did you have any luck? I've never fished Pandapas, but would love too. Do you know if there are any bass or Crappie in that pond? Thanks a ton! Quote

Do you know if there are any bass or Crappie in that pond? Thanks a ton! Scott, I fished Pandapas a handful of times but not with fly gear. There are plenty of trout to be had there especially just after it's stocked. I fished Caig Creek a couple times and always caught a few. As far as flies go, I always did best there on a black wooly bugger or tungsten nymphs. I imagine Mepps Spinners would work well too as the stocked fish will basically eat anything that comes by. I also did well in Tom's Creek and Poverty Creek off of Mt Zion Rd. It's been a while so I don't exactly remember where I parked, but it was somewhere the creek crossed under the road. I didn't see many people fishing that area. Little Stony Creek, otherwise known as the Cascades has lots of wild brook trout. I've caught plenty of the small ones on weighted nymphs but the big ones are much harder to catch. For whatever reason I enjoyed the challenge of going after wild trout more than the stocked streams. PM me and I'll let you in on a spot that not many folks know about that supposedly has better wild trout. It's kind of a pain to get to though. I'm not sure it would be worth it with in-line spinners as these fish are pretty hard to catch. You pretty much have to match the hatch. Just down 460 from Little Stoney Creek is Big Stoney Creek. It's another stocked stream but I've caught a bunch there on Mepps spinners (before I started fly-fishing). Floyd County has a bunch of stocked streams so I imagine any of those would be good as well. The important thing is keep an eye on the stocking schedule and try to get out not long after the fish have been stocked. You can still catch them otherwise, just not as many. Let me know how you do. hokiefisherman93 Posted January 21, 2010 Author Posted January 21, 2010 NOVA Angler, could you PM me any spots around tech? I frequently visit my brother and we always head out to the New and as good of fishing as it is. It gets old after the thousandth time fishing it ha. Quote
VABassin'14 Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 I live in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley and have trout fished since I was 3 or 4 years old. Just let me know if anyone wants to hook up sometime. They haven't been stocking much lately because it has been so cold. But when they start hitting some of my favorite streams, I will be going out every chance I get. Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted January 22, 2010 Author Posted January 22, 2010 VABassFisher, let me know if you ever wanna teach a rookie flyfisher how to catch trout or what patterns and stuff. Quote
VABassin'14 Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Well, i have never fly fished so I can't help you with that, but I could show you a few nice places to try. Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted January 25, 2010 Author Posted January 25, 2010 fair enough. let me know if you ever head out there and i can see what i can do to make it work out with my schedule Quote
scottb123 Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Anyone ever fish the Cherokee Flats on Big Stoney in Giles County? I went down their Saturday, but no luck. They have it set up real nice down there. Quote
