I'm thinking about getting a couple of wake baits.  What have you all experienced with these?  Any suggestions as to which ones work better than others?  Any help with best times/places to use them?

Thanks.

What style are you interested in?

What gear are you going to be throwing them on?

They come in all shapes and sizes, this will help narrow it down.

Probably Mann's or something similar.  Will be throwing them with med. to med/hvy casting tackle most likely with braided line.

if you're looking for a crankbait style wake bait (like the manns) then i would most definitley go with Bandit Foot Loose. this is the best wake crankbait i have ever used. i have used the manns 1- and i found it to be cheaply made, and not very pretty either.

River2Sea has a good wakebait out, they call it the v-joint minnow wake. it is 4 inches long and has three joints. very nice swimming movement.

I use Mann's Baby 1-Minus, caught two nice fish this morning on a green Elite. But I agree, they don't seem to hold up near as well as Bandit's Footloose. Bandit has a good color selection too. Mann's should have a new waker coming out, it may be called a Waker but I can't remember. Once they wear out I will move completely over to Bandit.

I also bought on BPS XPS Extreme Shallow bait but have not used it enough to make a comment. It's big, heavy and looks like an ugly, dead and bloated green sunfish. It would probably catch fish if I used it more.

I am using 20# braid for everything on two setups and 30# on another, once the 20# is fried I will replace it with 30#. I am not a professional fisherman so using braid does not cost me money, in fact, it saves me money in baits.

I have done WAY better on a 9" MSslammer, than anything else. I know, I know.... it looks like a couple chunks of broomstick with hooks attached to it, right ? But these things flat out catch fish !

Oh, and don't think because your fishing for numbers of medium sized fish, that the 6" Slammer should be okay. It sucks compared to the 9", even for smaller fish. The 12" never worked very well for me either......

BTW, I have one of the 3:16 wakebait Juniors that Branuss posted the photo of. Beautful lure, huh ? Too bad I've yet to get a touch on the thing.... Plus its like $90. I can get 3 MSslammers for that.

The Hud 90% of the time. The MSslammer the other 10%.

Peace,

Fish

A Bandit Footloose is the best I have used, and I've used a ton.  It will put a ton of fish on your line.  It is small, so you will catch your fair share of dinks.

For quality fish, go for the Bagley Bulgin' B2 and Bulgin B3.  Both are amazing, though a little fragile.  I could have cleaned a farm pond out with a B2 last year.  Great baits!

I don't have much experience with wakebaits, but the one I do have is a little chunky Lucky Craft - sorry, can't find the name.  It looks similar to a Manns -1, but with a feathered treble.  Not a big fish bait, but it's gonna clean up when the water warms a bit more.  I actually caught a LMB on it two weeks ago, 46 degree water temp  ;)

Great rattles, great action.

Get a couple of Storm Subwarts and give those a try.

They have a loud rattle and make quite the scene in the water with their big side to side movement.

You will loose some to the toothy critters, but the bass hammer them too.  Alot of times, you can see the fish's back streaking across the water at it like a shark attack!
