BassShephard Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I'm waiting for that warmer weather too, I have a feeling the ponds will still be frozen though, maybe time to hit the creek... just hope its not to high. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 13, 2010 Super User Posted January 13, 2010 Just because the air temperature is in the 40s the water temperature is the secret to fishing. You need to check the water temperatures and then use the baits and techniques for that water temperature and clarity. However, with that said, go out and have some fun. Be sure to wear your PFD and let others know where you will be and when you are supposed to be home just in case you tip over and the State Police have to look for your body in the cold water. Be careful as the water is still very, very cold. Quote

NewAngler Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Change of plans. I'm broke. I'm not going to the expo instead I am just going to fish up here. Quote

Aluma-Bass Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 upper james is looking nice right about now...good level and clearing up nicely to catch some nice winter smallies!! I was also thinkin of getting out on one of those 50 degree days Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Aluma-Bass where abouts on the upper you fishing? Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Quote Aluma-Bass where abouts on the upper you fishing? i dont live far from Maidens landing in Powhatan " RT 522" so i usually go there bc not far. Fishing is good both down & up river from maidens. It ranges anywhere from about 2ft-6ft somtimes you will find deeper holes up to 8-10ft during winter bc level is usually up compared to summer, lots of large rocks and riffles/rapids to fish. For deeper water ill go down to watkins landing. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=37.6640038+-77.8910595&hl=en&geocode=FQS1PgIdDHpb-w&mra=ls&sll=37.665886,-77.948341&sspn=0.234265,0.411301&ie=UTF8&ll=37.662896,-77.888689&spn=0.014642,0.025706&t=h&z=15 Quote
cmatthews6485 Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 i waded maidens landing one day during the summer i caught a few but not many i saw alot of gar though swimming a little to close to my legs Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Quote i waded maidens landing one day during the summer i caught a few but not many i saw alot of gar though swimming a little to close to my legs Its better fishing from a boat when you can go above the islands to the rocks or below maidens...Aint much but a sandy bottom right there at maidens and couple small islands. Yes there is alot of gar...some very large ones at that! Ive landed a few smallies in this area 17-20'' Quote
cmatthews6485 Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 when i went near the bridge there were a load of weeds under the water that you could barely walk through on the opposite side of where you park Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 yea the grass mats can get nasty over there during the summer...specially when top of the mats start showing on top of the water but thats usually in summer when we dont get rain and level drops. Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I live very close to that landing, Short Pump, never have fished that stretch of that river. If you ever want to hit that part let me know cause I aint ever fished that before. Quote
