Bassin-Yakin Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 I have never been to the Expo, whats it like is it worth the price of admission?? I am about an hour away and thinking about going.... fill me in... Quote
hokiefisherman93 Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 its a good time had. i been going for the past couple years and hadn't been let down anytime i have gone. Quote
Bigs Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 My girlfriend has been several times back before I met her, she actually has been big into fishing for ages. She says its worth the price to get in, I however have never been. I'm hoping there is a Daiwa rep there that knows something bout the pixy type r coming out this year. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 2, 2010 Super User Posted January 2, 2010 Yes, it is worth the price of admission. Check out the speakers, too. Nice lineup this year. Don't forget to hit Green Top off exit 86 onto Route 1 South. Green Top usually has their sale the same weekend as the Fishing Expo. And last year the Shimano reps were there and they really were great at answering questions. Make the trip and see for yourself. Quote
XLFISH Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 I for one think it is important to support stores like Green Top. I compare Bass Pro Shops to the likes of Wal Mart in the sence that they are retail monsters that come to town and crush all the mom and pop stores that have struggled for decades through some tough times. I could walk into Green Top and have them order me an item if they do not carry it. They take the time to listen and do not baffle you with B.S. if they do not know the answer. I know what they pay for merchandice because I get the same price they do for 90% of what I need. They all stick it to you because they are running a business but at least Green Top uses lube where as B.P.S. just grins and shoves it all the way in. Again I think it is important to help support the mom and pops and the average Joes. If large chains like B.P.S. and Wal Mart corner the market, they will monopolize and charge you what ever they deem "Reasonable". Sorry to get off the subject. I got mailed a couple of tickets to the show and if boredom drives me to it, I will be there. I am glad to see you guys are making the drive. Your comradery is impressive. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted January 2, 2010 Super User Posted January 2, 2010 From what I hear, Green Top has been competing favorably with BPS. Quote
Bigs Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 maybe so Dan but BPS doesnt have much in the way of deals hardly ever except big sales that they have maybe twice a year. Green top is gonna have a big sale startin a few days before the fishing expo so I suppose its worth a stop by there after I leave the fishing expo. I wont hold my breath for any crazy deals tho, I hope Im wrong. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted January 3, 2010 Super User Posted January 3, 2010 I like Green Top because they carry minor brands like Case Plastics and they don't run out of good stuff like BPS does. They also have a far superior rod selection than BPS. Also, their employees actually know what they are talking about. Quote
Froggin Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I second that about knowing what they are talking about. I like it when you ask someone about a product they can tell you where it is, whether they have it, and some info on it. Bass Pro has a good fishing selection but so far the people I talk to in the store have no clue on there products... Quote
Bigs Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I agree with you on tackle selection and the staff knowing their stuff. I do happen to like Patrick at BPS in ashland tho. I've gotten so used to bargain shopping online, ebay, TT, that I hardly shop in stores anymore. I remember when green top had 5 inch senkos for 4.99 a bag tho, that deal was tough to beat. I must have bought 20 bags from them that week. Do they sell Dave's tournament tackle there ? Those swim jigs are dynamite on the potomac during the summer. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted January 3, 2010 Super User Posted January 3, 2010 yep, they have DTT stuff at Green Top. DTT usually has a booth at the expo as well. They have a bunch of jigs, spinnerbaits, etc...and also a few guys there who will assemble custom spinnerbaits for you. You choose skirt colors, head styles, and blade configurations and they put it together for you. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 4, 2010 Super User Posted January 4, 2010 Patrick is a bass fisherman who used to work at Dick's Sporting Goods before he moved over to BPS. He is a very nice guy and very helpful. But he is not on the level of the Green Top people. Quote
s13john Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 was it the guy that worked at dicks in midlo...???? oo yah and those green top guys make you feel bad when you dont buy something from them, jeeze... but they defiantly have the best staff. lol i went their in the beginning of december wearing i tackle warehouse hoodie, caught myself half way to the door went and put the old carhart on to blend in. lol ;D ;D i guess i plan on going saturday. what time is everyone meeting up shoot me a pm or something id like to meet some fellow BR members. Aluma-Bass Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I have never been to the Expo, whats it like is it worth the price of admission?? I am about an hour away and thinking about going.... fill me in... Last time i went it was still called bass o rama...i stopped going bc it seemed as over the years it wasnt as big of an event as it has been years ago and alot of vendors stopped going. So i decided to try it again this year to see if it has gotten any better/bigger. But if you never been its worth it i think! Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I'll be there on friday or saturday with my buddy brent. I'll make sure I have at least a grand to spend incase I see anything I have to have. Im plannin on findin more deals at the hillendale flea market in february tho. Cant wait. Steve, your posts kill me man. Always about those green president photos, arent they? you cant take it with you when you go though... Spend on Steve. you mean like this lmao now steve thats what i call " big baller status", let me know where your gonna be at so i can follow you around some maybe you can buy me a reel or 2! Ill be lucky to get a crank bait :'( dont spend it all at one place!! Or you could get the side imaging humminbird depth finder for 999.00! Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 4, 2010 Super User Posted January 4, 2010 Yes, Patrick worked at the Dick's store off Midlo behind Chesterfield Towne Center. He is an excellent ambassador for BPS and extremely helpful. Quote
A.Do? Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Dan, you still going Friday morning? I forgot about the fishing expo and am supposed to go to vermont with the gf but I might be able to squeeze in friday morning. Quote

I actually already bought the humminbird with side imaging, its been sittin the box for about 4 months. Didnt wanna install it till spring when I can really use it. Cant wait to get it on. Oh and Sam you are right Patrick isnt on the same level knowledge wise as green top staff but he is helpful and just a pleasure to deal with. Alot nicer to deal with then anyone at green top. When I first got serious bout bass fishing early this summer, he helped me pick out the right stuff tackle wise, jigs, frogs, worms, crankbaits, etc... I just like someone with a good attitude, he's also a christian and a gentleman and that means something. I dont buy much at BPS anymore unless its something like a life jacket, battery charger, hooks, fishing line, stuff like that but I always make sure I find him first, he stops what he's doing and comes along with me while I shop. I'm lookin forward to havin a few custom baits made at the show this year and maybe finding someone who can split the handles on the 6 loomis rods I just bought. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted January 4, 2010 Super User Posted January 4, 2010 Dan, you still going Friday morning? I forgot about the fishing expo and am supposed to go to vermont with the gf but I might be able to squeeze in friday morning. I might go both days. I haven't decided yet. Rob wants to go on Friday to get the deals but some of the other guys are going on Saturday and I'd like to go along with them also. You gonna carpool with Rob or drive yourself so you can leave when you need to? Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I just organized all my tackle and I don't need another thing. Would it still be worth coming down from the DC area for the speakers? If I bring home even one more bag of soft plastics my wife will kill me, it took me all day Friday and 1/2 day Saturday to organize everything and put it in my new 6-drawer chest so that I can find what I am looking for! Super User Wayne P. Posted January 4, 2010 Super User Posted January 4, 2010 Here is a list of the seminar speakers: http://www.ncboatshows.com/speaker_bios.php/eventId/3 Quote

Im in woodbridge which means u would only have to drive 40 mins to my house and I drive the rest. I wanna go on saturday to hear the G man speak in the morning. He's one of my fave guys on the BASS tour. Dan what kinda deals u think will be there friday ? I havent been before so I can only go on what I heard. Is there gonna be used stuff for sale ? Or do you mean deals on new stuff ? Quote
RockvilleMDAngler Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Looks like a good time! Steve I will let you know if I can make it ASAP. Do you know for sure that Swindle is speaking on Saturday? They have no schedule up for the seminars on the website. Quote
