Bigs Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I took my boat out today and yesterday out of leesylvania and had no luck at all. Today we fished mattawoman and yesterday we fished around the mouth of mattawoman and no luck. My friend caught a 2 pounder off the pier at the opening of mattawoman and thats it. Anyone doing well out there ? If so where are you fishing and what are you throwing? We been using 5 inch grubs, frogs, senkos, texas rigged worms, swim jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, rattletraps, football jigs, sweet beavers, pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. Man it was so easy to catch fish 6 weeks ago. Seems like the summer patterns are dead finally so now what ? This weather is kinda inbetween and I can't seem to figure these fish out or even get on top of them to begin with :-/ Quote
Thai Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Dan, Slip Gun and myself went out today, water was still very murky from the rains and didnt have a chance to warm up much yet. But we were still able to put a few fish in the boat, slip gun caught a very beautifully bass with black dots all over it on a chatter bait out of the dying emergent growth in about 3' of water, I landed 2 bass on spinnerbaits and 2 stripers on a popper Things should be better by thursday once the sediments begin to settle and water warms up a bit. We'll try our luck again then. Quote
Bigs Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 Where were you guys fishing today ? What color on the spinner bait and chatter baits and what kinda retrieve ? Im plannin on goin out again thursday and then this weekend imma go to my place on the warm side of lake anna and see if my luck is any better. I'm shocked to go two days out there in a row without one single bite. I talked to 3 other ppl out on the water today and 2 of them said they caught one and other guy said he didnt catch any at all. You must know something the rest of us dont know  ;D Quote
Thai Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 my fist spinnerbait fish came on a 1/8 double blade that I colored a mix of purple & reds on a slow retrieve at about 2' in about 3' of water, second was on a 1/2 screaming eagle in watermelon color casted by some dying weeds and was taken right after impact. We had a couple more bites but missed them. As far as locations I'm not going to disclose exacts but in the Mount Vernon stretch of the river Quote
Super User Dan: Posted October 21, 2009 Super User Posted October 21, 2009 my fist spinnerbait fish came on a 1/8 double blade that I colored a mix of purple & reds on a slow retrieve at about 2' in about 3' of water, second was on a 1/2 screaming eagle in watermelon color casted by some dying weeds and was taken right after impact. We had a couple more bites but missed them. As far as locations I'm not going to disclose exacts but in the Mount Vernon stretch of the river Don't forget David's fish was on a chartreuse chatterbait. I honestly don't think color mattered yesterday, I think most of the fish just weren't where we were fishing. Quote
Bigs Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 Gettin on top of the fish seems to be the problem. I know of all the things I was throwing that something would have to work if only I could get on top of the fish. I'm gonna bring some tubes out tommorow and see what happens. I also need to hook up my humminbird 797 to help me find some of these fish, I just been lazy since I got it. Its collecting dust. I been sick since mid August and just started fishing again. Before I got sick the grass was green, the water was clear and catching fifteen 2-3 pounders a day was realistic. Now I'm just depressed when I go out there. Nothing but murky water and dead grass. Heck I'd settle for 3 or 4 two pounders and call it a day at this point. Quote
Thai Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Why not go target the schoolie striper for a bite fix, they greedily attack topwater lures this time of year Quote
Bigs Posted October 23, 2009 Author Posted October 23, 2009 went out again today and caught nothing. I did lose one on a grub and one on a spro frog and those were my only 2 hits. My friend who fishes with me usually caught two 1 pounders, both on 1/8 ounce buzzbaits. After runnin and gunnin all day we found a good spot where he caught his 2 fish. There was 4 other boats there all fishing but that didnt stop me. I figured out the fish there want small buzzbaits fished slowly and soft body frogs, mostly stanley ribbits reeled in steady. So tommorow we're headed out early and slammin this spot with buzzbaits, frogs and maybe even some senkos thrown in. My friend lost 3 fish in a row that he got skimmin a senko on top of the water. Anyone fish the rage tail toads on the potomac? What about the Paca Toads? I'm bout to pick up a few packs of the Lake Fork Tackle "Fork Frogs" and the Rage tails and see how they do. I been tryin the Paca Toads and they are great when you can keep them from goin belly up. I'm lookin for the perfect soft frog right now since that seems like my best bet. The horny toads seem to work ok but the feet break off constantly. Quote
Thai Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1256257719 that was yesterday You got to find a pattern man, and find the grass that hasnt died yet, there will be bass still in it Quote
Bigs Posted October 23, 2009 Author Posted October 23, 2009 If only I could find alot of green grass then I might get on top of some fish. My fishing buddy couldnt go this morning so I didnt go either. If anyone wants to go out today or in the next few days then lemme know. I have a 16 foot boat with a 50hp, gets the job done. Quote
Thai Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Im down for fishing anytime you want to go man, today New Angler and myself went to one of my spots from shore, we cuaght around 7 fish in 4 hours or so Quote
LHC - Bank Robber Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Theres still some fish in grass around mount vernon/ little hunting creek mouth, ive been getting at least one or two throwin a swamp donkey. Â Also soft buzz type frogs are working for me. Â I fished the bank on hunting creek a few days ago, landed 20+ striper, none very big still fun though. Quote
Bigs Posted October 23, 2009 Author Posted October 23, 2009 It's gonna rain pretty hard tommorow, you think the water will be too muddy on sunday ? If so then maybe monday or tuesday mornin if thats cool with you. Send me a pm and tell me what day you can go. Monday thru friday shows all mid-upper 60's 5 days in a row with no rain. I intend on goin out at least 3 days next week if not 4. Also gonna be checkin out a stratos 201 this weekend down in richmond and if all goes well Im gonna have myself a 21 foot bass boat 8-) If it doesnt work out then no biggie, I just have to launch out of somewhere up north like bellehaven marina. Tryin to get up towards alexandria and fort washington on the river at 28 miles per hour on my boat isnt fun coming from leesylvania. And from what I been hearing lately, the better action is further up north on the river. Quote
Thai Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Yeah lets plan a trip for Monday then, gives the water a little time to clear, but I'm free throughout the week and am usually out fishing. We can launch your boat from a place I know of in the creek if you want man Quote
soccplayer07 Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 the bite at mt vernon is hot right now. lots of fish to be had. Quote
Thai Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 yeah newangler and myself went out for a few hours today and the bite was deffinitely on Quote
Bigs Posted October 24, 2009 Author Posted October 24, 2009 Ok just tell me where to meet up with ya and I'll be there. I just gotta hit the road early to beat 95 north traffic coming from hoodbridge. Weather.com shows monday thru friday with some great weather. This comin week might be the last really nice week of weather for a long time.   I'm also hittin bass pro shops tommorow on the way to go see that stratos boat Im lookin at. Anyone know if they carry the new stradic ci4 there yet ? Gonna pick up some frogs and 1/8 ounce buzzbaits. And I lost my only black/blue chatterbait the other day when I got a birds nest mid cast and my bait snapped off midair  You think I should bother gettin another one or will the chartreuse one I have work better now ? Quote
shimmy Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 hmm...i notice that no one ever talks about fishing the bridges. That always fascinates me. I have had some of the best luck in my life at those good ol happy spots of mine on the Potomac. Yet, that was back in the day when my fam lived here and had a boat. Knock em dead boys. Shimmy Quote
Bigs Posted October 24, 2009 Author Posted October 24, 2009 actually my fishing partner fishes the woodrow wilson bridge a few mornings a week and usually catches 5-10 fish there between 2-5 pounds. I just havent gotten up there yet. Potomac Angler has a few good spots within 15 minute boat ride from the bridge so Im sure we'll hit that up on monday while we're makin our rounds. Im headed out in about an hour to go see a 21 foot stratos in Chester VA so who knows, I might be rocking a new ride on the water this week. I just gotta figure out where the heck Im gonna store both my boats in my driveway. Quote

That sounds sweet Steve, good luck with the stratos man, and if you run out of room in your driveway for two boats, theres always mine man  Quote
Bigs Posted October 24, 2009 Author Posted October 24, 2009 Got my stratos! Now Im ready to tear up some bass and snakeheads. Oh ya  ;D Quote
soccplayer07 Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 congrats. you'll crush my ranger...thats for sure. Quote
Bigs Posted October 25, 2009 Author Posted October 25, 2009 nah not really. It does 65 with one person or maybe 62 with 2 people and a tournament load. Its not that fast for a stratos. Back then they only came with a 200hp motor. If it had a 250 then I could see it doing 75-80 but thats too fast for me. Im happy goin 60 right thru choppy water . I took that boat thru some rough choppy windy conditions today and it handled like a dream. Didnt feel any bumps like I have in javelins and rangers I ridden in. Not to mention that was my first time ever drivin a fiberglass bass boat. That boat is easy to drive . Im beyond happy. Its also in immaculate condition, not one single stress crack anywhere. Quote
Jake... Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 Got my stratos! Now Im ready to tear up some bass and snakeheads. Oh ya  ;D congrats man. enjoy it while the weather is good Quote
