tnbassfisher Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I was wanting to know of some good places to fish without a boat in Middle Tennessee. Quote
tallen316 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Sorry I wish I could help you out with that. I am live in Middle Tennessee and about the only places I know of around here are local ponds and maybe some creeks to wade in. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 That's all that I have found. I've found a creek that I wade on a normal basis, but I can't find much other than that. Quote
KevO Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 It's hard to fish the lakes around here from the shore. There are always a ton of people in the spot you want to fish. Percy Priest is very rocky and you get snagged real easy. Keep wading creeks and fishing small ponds. The only place I can think of at percy priest would be stewarts creek. TWRA built a dock and made it very accessible for bank fishing. Another option would be go to a TWRA WMA like Williamsport outside of columbia. There are 5 lakes to fish, plus you can rent a jon boat for a couple bucks. Quote

BrnzeBckStalker Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 what i can suggest is to save up a couple hundred dollars. there are plently of 12-16ft flatbottom jon boats for sale on craigslist fairly cheap. you can atleast get a hand controlled trolling motor. there is a guy up at the steam TVA steamplant in cumberland city who has a canoe and paddles out from a boat ramp into a creek that opens up into a big dual sided cove and into another creek. he wears out crappie all the time. i am sure you can do good on bass too. there plenty of 8ft-18ft drops offs in that area that you can catch decent 3lbs+. and a few rock walls. i dont know how safe it is to go on the main river with just a trolling motor. i personally would not do it. but this just gives you another inexspensive option. that is if you have a truck too. also do you guys know of that lake where you can rent a jon with a little motor? is it marrowbone? or is it old hickory? i cannot remember. if you need any help i can find you some deals. i am on it non stop Quote
KevO Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 A canoe or a kayak would be great too. You can go a long way in either if you want to paddle. I wouldn't take em out in the channel but some people do. I've seen people paddle from the hobson pike bridge to the dam at priest. Thats a long way. Quote

I have been looking into a few Kayaks. Are there any that you would recommend for fishing? Quote
KevO Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I really don't know anything about kayaks. Bass Pro has some cool ones set up for fishing but they are like $1000. For that money you get a jon boat w/ motor. I have a 12' pelican (plastic) jon boat that I like. It got me around with a trolling motor, but on windy days it's not worth the hassle. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted July 17, 2009 Author Posted July 17, 2009 How big of a trolling motor do I need to power a small jon boat? Quote
BrnzeBckStalker Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 How big of a trolling motor do I need to power a small jon boat? what are the dimensions? Quote
KevO Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 As much as you can afford. I only have a 30# minnkota transom mount. I borrowed my friends 20' pontoon boat one day and put it on there. It pushed it around well enough on speed 3 and higher, less than 3 would barely move it. So it would do fine for a 12-14' jon. Quote
tutle Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Without a doubt the most productive area for a boat-less fisherman is the tail-race of a dam. Middle TN has some great ones. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 What dams do you recommend? Sorry to bring up an old thread. Quote
KevO Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Below Old Hick or Percy Priest would be the only ones I know of that are mostly bass. The others that I think of are mainly trout streams. Quote
tutle Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Nickajack, cordell Hull or whatever is close to you. It doesn't have to be a big lake ,though. The "pot hole" below any dam will provide good fishing. Quote
brandon lynch Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Hey what do you all consider middle tenn. the reason being, we just bought 80 acres up in Hartsville near Carthage. Anyways we went fishing (i think cumberland) by the BIGGGGGG smoke stacks the Nuke plant anyways the hawgs were hitting. There was plenty of shore fishing we were in a boat but people were in there with johns and paddles Quote
bandsr4me20 Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 marrowbone lake can rent boats with trolling motors Quote
