piscicidal Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Hey all. Long time lurker, first time poster. A quick question for the S Fla crowd. In general, which area is better this time of year....Holiday Park or the US27 area (near Sawgrass rec park). I started fishing these areas a few months ago, but lately I've really been struggling. Not looking for anybody's hot spots or hot tips. Just general info. Thanks in advance. BTW. I have a trip to Toho scheduled for Thursday and an trip Friday with George Welcome at the Stick Marsh. I've been reading you guys for a long time and I have been very impressed with the good info shared here. I hope to contribute myself in the coming months. Quote
gar-tracker Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Waters rising , the canals get rough when the water gets high, all the fish go back into the vast area of flats thats adjacent to the canals. Combine that with the summer heat and you have a rough situation. Travel up the road a bit to Okeechobee, much better. Quote
piscicidal Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 Thanks gar-tracker. I've had a little bit of luck in the mornings, but it gets pretty bleak after that. I've tried some deep water techniques later in the day, but with very little luck. I went out tonight after work and caught a couple fish at the golf course near my house. With all the rain today, there was a lot of moving water through the golf course canals. They hit a wacky-rigged senko thrown right in the out-flow current from the culvert. Caught three fish in ~15mins, biggest one about 2.5lbs. Quote
gar-tracker Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 A good summer pattern at Holiday is to Carolina rig the bridge pilings down by Alley, east of the toll booth, and out on the Alley Quote
bocabasser Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 loxahatchee is red hot right now. this past sunday i fished a big fish tourny and an 8 pounder took the loot. my partner and i had 20+ pounds in the first hour of fishing. everyone who fished said they were throwing back 3-5 pounders all morning long. Quote
piscicidal Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 Thanks for the tip gar-tracker. I've thrown a shakey head/worm around by the pilings but with little luck. Maybe I need to slow it down a little. Bocabasser, glad to hear you nailed em at loxahatchee. That's definately my favorite place to fish in South Florida. I love frog fishing those flats. I had my morning trip on Lake Toho this morning. Capt definately put me on some fish. They were biting very finicky though. The front that came through yesterday has them biting short. I had probably 30 takes actually catching only about 25% of those. It's tough to hook up because they're biting short, but at the same time you have to hit them fairly quickly before they bury back in the maidencane. My second bite of the day was a very large fish which I was able to wrechout of the weeds only to have him drop off just outside the net. Capt said it was about 7-8lbs (I thought it was bigger ) I got a couple 3-4lbers. Getting ready for my morning trip at the Stick Marsh tomorrow, now. Quote
bocabasser Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 loxahatchee allows tournaments now? they do, but to get a permit it takes a couple of years. a couple of guys got together to see who could catch the biggest fish is all. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted June 26, 2009 Super User Posted June 26, 2009 Boca, Are the flats on fire or the canals? North or South end? May head out early Saturday morning and be back by 10! Quote
bocabasser Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 there are fish everywhere. if you put in at the south end, just go around the buoy and start fishing the vegetation. Quote
piscicidal Posted June 27, 2009 Author Posted June 27, 2009 I had my trip to the stick marsh yesterday with George Welcome. It was a tough day. The wind was blowing hard out of the South/SW which made it very difficult to fish the way George wanted to. But he worked hard and were able to get some fish. None of the famed stick marsh monsters but we did get a couple 4lbers. I was impressed enough with George and with the lake that I left Fort Lauderdale at 4:00 AM this morning to drive back up and try it again. Today was even tougher with the waves again crashing into the north side of the lake and no water flow. Still I had a great time fishing with George. He's a good guy to spend a day with and I learned a lot. I definately am going to try another trip to the marsh soon. Quote
gar-tracker Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 When that place first opened it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Haven t been back in years. Quote
piscicidal Posted July 11, 2009 Author Posted July 11, 2009 Are the fish still going good at Loxahatchee? I'm going to give it a try tomorrow morning. I'll post a report when I can. Quote
piscicidal Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 We fished Loxahatchee this morning. Fished from 6:30 to about 10 and caught ~15fish. Average size was very good, though, with a bunch of 3-5lb fish. Here are two of the bigger ones we got today. Quote
bocabasser Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 right on piscicidal. i am going tomorrow to redeem myself from yesterdays tourny. i love lox and love that it is in my(our) backyard. looks like you fished close to the rock berm side. that big one came on a horny--i love when they smash topwater. i am glad you guys caught em up. Quote
piscicidal Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Amen bocabasser. I mentioned earlier in this thread...Lox is definately my favorite place to fish in south florida. Nothing better than catching big bass on horny toads. There was a tourney at Lox this morning also. I don't know how the winner did, but I think we would have done pretty well. Our six biggest fish today would have been well over 20lbs and we quit at 10:00AM. Last year the two of us won the FS Forum tourney out at Lox. That place has been pretty good to me and I love fishing it. Quote
bocabasser Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 fished lox today from 6:30 to 1. caught around 20 fish with 3 pounds being the biggest. all of my fish came in front of the spillways that were moving water. c-rigged a senko. it was brutal hot with very little wind. tried to get to my area on the flats but a lot of junk was blocking my way and i did not feel like bulldozing. i am going to go back on wednesday. Quote
piscicidal Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 Fished Holiday Park today. It was S-L-O-W. Caught three from 6:30 - 10:00. Two little largemouth and one peacock maybe 2lbs. I added a picture of the peacock... The pumps were going and the water was way up. I talked to some guys at the dock. They asked how I did and I said I got three. They said that was three more than everyone else is getting. Think I'll stick with Lox for awhile.... Quote
