vatech Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 My dad has been saying he'd really like to go on a fishing trip with me but we're having trouble locking in on a location. We live in Richmond and would probably both take off work to fish for a single day somewhere. We don't own a boat or anything. Where would be a good place for us to go preferably in a 1.5 hour radius or less around Richmond? Should we just pay for a guide somewhere? Quote
NewAngler Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 PM Sam- i beleive he is from richmond, and always has great insight. i'm up north, and only been to a few spots. good luck! Quote
bigbasshunter Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 well let see. you got lake anna, SML, james river, the chick res and river as well as briery creek which might be 2hrs away. all real good locations with healthy fish Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 26, 2009 Super User Posted June 26, 2009 hi, ed. allen's off route 60 has boats for rent to fish the chickahominy lake. teddy carr is an excellent guide and he can take you to a number of places so google teddy carr and send him an e-mail. i hate to tell you where to go as you may not catch anything and i would be very upset. check out the james river fishing school and see if mike ostrander can take you all catfishing. there are other guides around this area so google Virginia fishing guides. you can pick up a free freshwater fishing guide at wal-mart or tackle stores and check out all the places to fish. my suggestion would be the guides as they know where to go and the baits to use. Chimborazo Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Quote hi, ed. allen's off route 60 has boats for rent to fish the chickahominy lake. I like Ed Allen's. I think it's around $35 for a boat with 6hp motor, and you can rent trolling motors too. Not sure how much they are. The people there are really nice. If you go a little later in the day, the bass will slay topwater lures. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 When I used to visit a pal at VCU, we used to go to a walking bridge in the center of town over the James. It had access to several small islands. You could rock hop all over the place and catch smallies all day long. We had several 100 fish days. Most were small, but sometimes we got a good two or three pound fish. We used to use hellgramites. I wish I could give you directions or the name of the bridge... But there should be a ton of opportunities all up and down the James to wade fish and rock hop for small mouth. Quote

That's the only one I can think of. vatech should check out Pony Pasture too if the river level is safe. Not sure what it is right now. Quote
