I have been wanting to try out Stickmarsh/Farm 13, but only have a Indian River Geenoe with trolling motor.  It is really stable, but I was wondering if it would be doable early in the morning before the winds picked up, and if I mainly stayed within a mile or two from the ramp on the Stickmarsh side.

Is this a big boat only type of waterbody?  Kind of hard to tell because it is kind of that in between size...  Most importantly Would I have the range to hit any decent spots?

What ya'll think?

I have done it before out of the same boat with electric motors but watched the wind forecast. I didn't have any trouble catching fish near the ramp but don't know the lake at all. Fishing may be tougher at other times of the year and you need more range. PM George Welcome and ask what he thinks.

Yep - winter better than summer: thunderstorms can move very fast. How big is the trolling motor on the Gheenoe?

I found a picture of the boat I got (but my boat doesn't have this motor) <here> Mine has a 30 lb thrust trolling motor- I guess it really isn't a Gheenoe. It is an "Indian River Flat Back Canoe".

Anyways, it can move at a decent speed on speed 5- throws a small wake. I wish I could say how many MPH it clips, but I can't really tell.

I had a very humbling experience on the Marsh a few years ago and would never take a canoe out on the lake unless I was 100% sure that the winds weren't going to pick up. We were caught in 3 footers craching into the side of our boat trying to get back to the ramp going down the canal and it was 34 degrees outside.

pretty sure there's gators bigger than that thing out there... do you want to be close to them in it?

I would stick to a bigger boat if you're gonna venture far from the ramp, there are some areas closer to the ramp you might be comfortable, but I wouldn't garauntee the numbers or size the stick marsh is famous for.

Yes, do your weather homework, I have taken my 14' Jon Boat with a 9.9HP Kicker and a 36lb trolling motor. I went all the way to the "back lot" and made a day of it and only bumped into a gator approaching the length and width of my Jon boat with my trolling motor, needles to say it was a tense few minutes as its wake rocked the boat.

Why don't you try and reserve Lake Goodwin which is right there where Stick Marsh is? It would be perfect for your little setup and you should tear them up. A ten pounder or better is always possible there, and it gets much less pressure than the Marsh. Send me a PM and I will give you the details.

Hmm... My wife saw this post and now she is hesitant to letting me go.   :o  It does seem like the general consensus is that this body of water might be a little too gnarly for my rig- especially, in light of the fact that I have never been on this body of water before.  Plus, it sounds like most of the good southern portion is just too far away for me to get to?

Thanks for the insight.

after seeing your canoe, I would suggest you not try it.

I fish in ponds out of canoe all the time.  It has a trolling motor and It's also very stable, especially the way I have it set up...outriggers etc.

But I wouldn't dream of taking it to Stickmarsh. I guess  you could putter around the ramp and around towards the back lot, but I wouldn't do it.

Storms can blow up real quick, other boaters are not always so considerate, and those by golly huge mother gators would scare the bejeebuss outta me.

In my view, the very fact that you are seeking reassurance, should lend to your answer.

You can fish areas near the boat ramp and on the north shore.

Thats about it.
