bigfruits Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 hello. i know alot of you VA guys have kayaks and was wondering if you could recommend a depthfinder. ive never used one before so im not sure what to look for other than a color screen. are they waterproof? im coming home in late may for a vacation (im working overseas) and plan on driving down to farmville and picking up a couple manta ray 12s. maybe hit briery creek lake before heading back up to nova. thanks in advance -z Quote
SimonSays Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I have a humminbird piranhamax I can't remember the model number off the top of my head but it's the one with the tri-beam, works well when looking at the bottom. I still need to learn to read the thing though. I've heard color screens can drain batteries pretty fast so I kept away from those. Quote
bigfruits Posted April 25, 2009 Author Posted April 25, 2009 thanks SimonSays. do you know if it is waterproof? the descriptions i read did not mention anything about that. i expect to flip a few times on rapids.... Quote
SimonSays Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Nope not waterproof at all I don't think, it'll withstand spray and light rain probably but not being totally submerged Quote
A.Do? Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 i believe my piranhamax portable is waterproof. not sure though. =/ I'll look up the specs later. Quote
Paul Naj Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I have a PiranhaMAX 220 and Humminbird specs it as waterproof. Quote
armesjr Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I have a piranghaMAX 240 with a ram mount, minus the ball, that i had on my kayak. The ball is still on the yak where i sold it. You can buy the ball itself for 12. Also the setup if you wanted to run it off 8AA batteries. I am thinking of selling it, let me know if you would be interested. Quote
