AKFerzy7 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 ok so last weekend KVD wins. I will always be one of the first to tell you that he is undoubtedly the greatest angler ever. clunn was great but kvd is on another level. last year he wins two on s.k. cranks in this mysterious color scheme that works in shallow and muddy water called sexy shad. It is finally released in every lure they make (short of their pre-packaged catfish bites) and flies off shelves everywhere, i mean the internet is on fire. now back to last weekend kvd wins on a red eye shad in sexy shad. but wait! this is sexy shad with chrome sides and bass pro shops is gonna have it in a week!!!!!!!!! so it all begins again i know its good business but strike king has kvd, along with many many other successful anglers and a loyal following but why cant they not B.S. us. maybe I am wrong?????? the story im speaking of is on another site Quote
Super User Tin Posted March 20, 2008 Super User Posted March 20, 2008 All marketing.... I remember when George Cochran caught 99 pounds and won on G-Ville using a KVD Wild Shiner (that had not hit the markets yet). So it got hyped up and sold quick when it came out. But in the video footage it was clearly a Lucky Craft Pointer. I know the color he was using in the Classic he called "Sexy Herring". It is like SK's typical diamong pattern but a dark blue fading to a lighter blue towards the bottom and an orange spot under the bill. All pro's do it though. Just like how Alton Jones won the Classic on Booyah's two new baits. In one piece of footage it clearly looked like he had a Jewel football jig tied on. Who know's, we are all fisherman, and we all lie. ;D Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 20, 2008 Super User Posted March 20, 2008 Rick Clunn has set the bar high. KVD still has a long way to go. "The Best" of an era isn't the same as "The Best Of All Time." On topic, I suggest buying lures recommended by people you know or trust. This will save you a lot of money over time. Getting past the "marketing" is always difficult, but the magic comes from the magician, not the wand! 8-) Quote
AKFerzy7 Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 with that said... has anyone on here experienced success with the sexy shad scheme (besides re-selling them on eBay) and kvd is well on his way to clear the bar that clunn has set. and doin it against some serious competitors. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 20, 2008 Super User Posted March 20, 2008 to me, sexy shad is just another color. i havent bought a single one because, truthfully, i dont really like the way it looks. it doesnt look like too bad of a color, but its too light for my applications, i like darker colors like tennessee shad. and also, im not a big fan of strike king cranks. i stick mainly to rapalas, bandits, and bombers (but mostly raps ). i would NEVER buy a bait only beacuse its in sexy shad color. It was obviously named by some city slicker because it looked more like a dead mouse with whiskers. Anyway, it won on Guntersville and made a Big Splash (don't excuse the pun) : Roger Quote
dman Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 with that said... has anyone on here experienced success with the sexy shad scheme (besides re-selling them on eBay)quote] I have a custom painted ratt l trap that was done very nicely to look like sexy shad. I have done pretty well with it. Quote
Willzx225 Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Apparently BPS isn't doing as well as they had anticipated with this color since I just saw one of their bargin bins with nothing but that color in the Series 3. I'm not certain of the price they had them for but the bin was still overflowing (The fact that I did not notice the price should tell you that I really don't care for the "Sexy Shad" color that much!) I always believe that its not the bait but where that bait is that catches the fish. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted March 24, 2008 Super User Posted March 24, 2008 Just like the kid who got a state record largemouth in maryland using BPS lure...BPS hyped the heck out of that lure and it was "sold out" for quite some time. Quote
Guest muddy Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 I hope the next world record is caught on live bait ;D Quote
GobbleDog Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 I'm amazed he did so well working that off-shore hydrilla with a lipless crankbait. I assume he was using a heavy action rod to rip that bait through the grass like that without getting fouled every cast. Strike King's Red Eye Shad, Sexy Shad color: Quote
MaxDal Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 I agree with you ... better trust your friends than people who get money promoting a product. Don't get me wrong... I'm a huge fan of KVD and I know Sponsors/marketing blabla are mandatory if we want to be able to follow tournament trails for many years to come.... I'm just not sold on the "bait that wins" stuff ! Find the fish first ... and then they are bass after all(I know they're often harder to catch that what we expected) but I'm pretty sure it's not because I don't have a sexy shad lure to throw at them. Come on ! We don't even know if they see colors like we do. Plus I've never used any sexy shad colored lures ... the color looks good yeah ! But I've tons of Chartreuse shad baits and I feel like there's no difference (I know this has already been debated elsewhere). Quote
Del from philly Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Looking at other sports, you gotta put fishing at the top of the marketing game... i love the way in basspros and cabellas, every single thing they sell has its own sales pitch.....too funny....every thing you read about gets you hyped....too funny the lure switching i have NO tolerance for...How rediculous. what a shame....i dont listen to a word these pros say when suggesting a lure.... I use their OTHER knwoledge, the things they arent trying to sell like weather and water clarity Quote
arul Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 If you remember the Telecast, it wasn't the color or paint that KVD was stressing. Whether it was sexy shad, red eye, or purple may not have mattered. KVD was preaching the "wiggle" it gave as it fell through the hydrilla after he was jerking it through. - Not really the color. It was almost as if he was intentionally trying to get it hooked up in the Hydrilla... Now, I have never heard of that technique. I tried some suspending jerkbaits just above submerged hydrilla to some decent results, but I always figure actually running cranks through the stuff was a no-no due to hangups. I wonder what Lb test and type of line he was using. I mean he was really yanking it through when he got caught on hydrilla... Also I guess yanking it so hard would shake the grass off the lure as well as it came free??? Anyone else fish a crank like this to success? Quote

Anyone else fish a crank like this to success? Exactly what I was thinking. Big line on a heavy action rod was the reason he could get away with ripping it through the grass like that. I don't use lipless crankbaits often, but watching KVD do it so effectively on my home lake has caught my attention. Quote
