I am relatively new to the DC/ Virginia area and looking for places to keep me occupied during the winter months...anyone have any ideas and advice what hits this time of year?

There are tons of places. First of all welcome, also what are your limitiations:

bank beater

fish from a boat.

What do you like LMB or Small Mouth.

Where do you live county. We have the Potamac which can hold a variety of fish, but at the same time that all depends on what all you can do.

hope it helps, if not there are a few members that are brave an bold an like to go out in the cold :)

Well first off Welcome to the forums, and.... sorry about the traffic up there in DC. But that is how it is, you should have found you a place in the country, there are a lot more people that fish out in the country then there are in the city.

I fish the Potomac and that place is a lot of fun, but it also gives off a big headache if you're not careful. But if you are ever down my way let me know I will take you out if I'm off. ;)

Right now i am limited to bank beater, but hoping to be investing in something to get me out into some deeper waters soon.

I prefer SM but would not limit myself because of the fun behind catching LM too.

I am actually right in the heart of the district, but have no problems braving our aweful traffic and driving to anyplace I need to, especially to get out of the city every now and then.

Hope this can help you veterans give me some advice.

You can try the Rappahanack River in Fredricksburg, VA down near Fall Hil Avenue. There is a small parking lot and quite a few places to cast from the bank for smallies.

You can also try the following lakes in Northern Virginia for large mouths fishing from the shore. There are also locations at Quantico Marine Corp Base if you buy a base fishing permit.

Lake Mercer

Lake Royal

Woodglen Lake

Lake Huntsman

Burke Lake

Lake Barton

I hope this helps.

a few more to add to the list

loch raven (baltimore) - boat rentals start in the spring. been there once had pretty good luck.

fountain head (clifton va) - boat rentals start in the spring. ive caught a few 3-4 lbers at the logs about 100 yds left of the boat launch from shore. both my personal bests came from there (6.5lbs for both) fishing weed lines from a rental jonboat

shenandoah river (front royal va) - canoe rentals start in the spring. decent smallmouth fishing. recommend downriver canoe company. i havent been there in a few yrs, i heard there have been some fish kills there.

riverbend and algonkian park (northern va, potomac river) - no rentals but has both large and smallmouth bass.

mattawoman creek (charles county md, potomac river) - never been there but i believe they have boat rentals in the spring and have heard good reviews about the largemouth fishing there.

If  you are looking for some good fishing in and around DC, I would fish the C&O Canal. I have caught a lot of good ones out of there. Down by Fletchers boat house usually works pretty good for me.

Finesse Um. I would also throw 1/4 oz. Bladebaits but keep in mind that there is a lot of wood in there to get snagged on.

I think you can rent canoes at Riverbend.

You shouldn't need to go further than the Potomac, the C&O, and even some places in Rock Creek through the park.  For Smallmouth, you're going to want to get a little further upriver on the Potomac, but for largies, stripers and other warmwater fish, you should be just fine on the C&O and Potomac through town.  I've got some other places (some of them a little wacky) in extreme NOVA if you need more.

If I lived close to the Potomac, I'd never fish anywhere else. That place is LOADED with quality bass and they don't mess around. Some of my best days ever have been on the Potomac. I'll be there this Saturday, can't wait.

Close to DC, on the VA side, go anywhere on the upper Potomac from Scott's Run all the way up to Riverbend Park and you'll do good for Smallies.  They're all over the place.

Let me know how you do. 8-)
