ohiobassmaster93 Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 alrite so heres the deal..as of now i'm stuck to fishing a local pond that has some pretty good size fish in it. but the pond has scum on the bottom and on top of that its only 4 ft deep most of the way around..but there is one bank that is much deeper. so wat is was wondering is what baits you would throw and how that you fish them without gettin pond scum all over the place. thanks Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 21, 2008 Super User Posted March 21, 2008 anything weedless. try texas rigged senko style lures subsurface texas rigged ribbon tail worms on the bottom and if the scum on top is thick enough to support a lure, crawl a texas tailed ribbon tail worm along the top...thats one of my killer topwater lures. guitarkid Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Try the shakey head, or swimming a twirl tail worm real slow. This pond sounds exactly what I fish pretty regularly. -searoach Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 21, 2008 Super User Posted March 21, 2008 weightless trick worm buzzing frog Where ya from ohiobassmaster? I used to live in Ohio and frequented to ohio canal mostly.Your talking about miles and miles of what you just described.Scum, weeds, scum, and more scum.Lunkers galore because most people wouldnt even try to fish it.LOL Quote
smallieking Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 topwater is a great chose but for those deeper fish i like lipless cranks just keeping it just above the scum and if u feel it rip it hard out of it Quote
ohiobassmaster93 Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 i live like 25 minuts from dayton soo basicaly any lake we go to its an 1 1/2 hr drive Quote
tyrius. Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I wouldn't really limit my choice of lures at all. I would spend some time figuring out how deep the "scum" is and then fish something just on top of it. If it's 4 feet then fish a shallow diving crank, lipless crank, or spinnerbait just over the top of the scum. Or fish soft plastics on the bottom. Also, don't be afraid of the scum. If you want to catch fish, sometimes you have to get dirty! My father in law always gets annoyed fishing at his pond because of the weeds. Since he hates pulling weeds off his lures he only uses weedless lures and doesn't catch as many. When I'm fishing with him I'm either pulling weeds off my lure or catching fish. The fish are in the weeds so you gotta go in after them. Quote
ohiobassmaster93 Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 well during the summer a weightless watermellon senko did the trick and in late spring early summer and fall i slow rollin norman fatboy worked well to... but during this time of year i can't find the bait like i have other times of the year..i jerkbait is kinda hard to work here so i try and avoid that but maybe thats wrong?? Avalonjohn44 Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 The Lunker City Salad Spoon is my favorite bait for scum, or any other vegetation on top of the water. I would try a single bladed willow leaf spinnerbait too. And you can never go wrong with a weightless trickworm slowly pulled across the bottom scum. Quote
OtterAKL Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 I'd go with a topwater frog like the Spro Bronzeye. They are made for exactly this purpose and will catch lunkers. Good luck! Quote
SimonDM17 Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 I hate pulling scum off my lures, too. Here's my suggestions: Find a crankbait that mimics the forage, make it run .5-1.5 feet off the bottom. Alternatively, do the same thing with a jerkbait...if you get a "suspending" one that actually rises slowly (like a small husky jerk often does), you can really work shallow bottoms without getting dirty. Fish the deep side, too...grubs, tubes, and stick baits...let them fall slowly, and then pop them as or right before they hit bottom. Quote
