I've been itchin to catch a fish on the big baits, so I headed out to "The Spot". I only brought one lure because I really wanted to get something on this bait. It wasn't what I thought of as ideal topwater conditions with off and on clouds and little wind, but I decided to stick with it. After a few casts this girl sucked the bait under very quietly. I almost missed it.

I also fished the occoquan on Saturday. We boated 7, with the biggest about 3 pounds. Looks like the spinnerbait bite is picking up a little.

Nice fish Allyn! That's a helluva swimbait, what kind of rod are you using to haul that sucker out there?

Thanks guys

Its the Okuma guide select 7'11" MH.

looking into getting one of those swimbait rods, how do you like the Okuma?

I love it. Great value for the money. I've been told by another member here that you can double it up as a flippin stick with heavy jigs.

Sweet fish Allyn. Cant wait til you nail a monster on that swimbait.

Me too. ;D It may take a while though. I was really trying to figure out how to present it. I was doing a steady retrieve, deadstick, walk the dog. (I was just imagining...under water.....a school of tiny fish following this lure around the pond ;D )

I made a few passes by the opening of this small cove with no takers, when I came back later on, I just cast it out, started taking up the slack when it got slurped under.

Great fish!

Yep, must be that time of the year (fall bite), because I was itching to catch my first fish on the swimbait too.  We went out last week to a little lake a friend told us about, and I actually ended up with 3 pig smallies on swimbaits!  2 on MattLures BabyBass (smallmouth pattern, nonetheless...little cannibalistic suckers!!) and 1 on a Huddleston 6" Rainbow Trout!  But, none of these fish "quietly slurped" these baits...they all 3 HAMMERED them!  ;D

Still waiting to catch my first toad largemouth on a hardbait...hopefully this fall.

Anyways...didn't mean to hijack this thread or steal your thunder  :-[

Awesome fish again!!

Its all good, nice fish man. Smallies are very aggresive. I've got some of Matts baby bass and the 6" hudd i've got to break in too.  ;)

Way to slay 'em with the big bait there Allyn. Is this a trend ofr you or do you plan on making it consistent plan of attack?

Dude, still wishin' I was fishin'. Haven't been out in some time. >:(

Thanks for all the comments guys, means a lot.

Kevin, I think the bigger question would be why haven't you been fishing?

Been so busy, getting ready for a 2nd baby. He'll be here next month, and I'm about done with all of the honey do's. I think the work has just begun however. Not sure if I'll have much free time for a while  after he comes. Maybe in the spring.

I'll try and get out there this weekend, the bite sure seems to be on. :)

ahhh I see. I guess that is a good enough reason.  ;D

Here's to a happy and healthy baby.   We'll have to get up next season once he's all settled in.

I'm going to buy a bbz one 8 incher.  I hope a 7.3:1 gear ratio reel isn't so fast that retreiving it will hurt and that it'll move super fast.  I have a lake I know of where there are bass that easily exceed 7 pounds.

What kind of rod and reel? Not only do you have to think about the gear ratio, but the drag and line capacity. BBZ is a large bait, I wouldn't even throw it on my current setup.

probablly a daiwa heartland big bait special for starting (It's 65 dollars), and a daiwa hyperspeed zillion though a luna or a shimano high profile baitcaster would probablly be a lot better. I plan on using 35-40 pound mono.
