shore fishermen?

its really the only way i get to fish right now.  i can go inbetween college classes, and cant get the canoe out.  any one else do alot of shore fishing?  i would love to get a boat, but college and gas is high, as if i had ta tell yall that...lol.  so how do you fish?

heya Deermaster, I'm in college too, before I worked my @ss off for my Hobie kayak I settled with an inflatable kayak just to get out on the water. I caught my PB (avatar pic) on my inflatable, they are a bit crazy to handle in the wind but for the low price, easy storage and ability to get out on the water made it an easy choice for a poor college student =D

I fish from shore and kayak. Being on shore isn't bad and most of my PB have come from shorefishing.

When you're in a boat, consider that up to 90% of the casts you make are probably going to shore -- it's the feature that most people catch most fish from. So when you're fishing from shore, you need to keep that in mind. That means that the fish you're after are either right infront of you or off to one side, parallel to the shore. So first, wear dark/drab clothes (no bright white tees!), and move stealthily. 8-) Try and keep your silhouette off the skyline by keeping trees/brush behind you. Make your first few throws short, delicate, and in your immediate area. Then gradually pitch your bait further down the shore to your left and right (as cover permits).

This stuff sounds obvious but I see so many people go thundering up to the water's edge, wearing bright clothes, moving around far too much, yelling to each other, etc -- that's not good and it does scare fish away. I have -- on several occasions -- literally crawled on my hands and knees to the shore and seen (and caught) some very big fish that were oblivious to me. I have also crept to the shore, seen big fish, accidentally cracked a dead tree branch, and watched the fish head for the horizon!

I like to have at least two rods with me -- one with a finesse/weightless worm for sight fishing at my feet, and then another with whatever I'd use if I was in a boat.

There are places to fish for freshwater fish on the eastern shore of Virginia?

I fish ponds all the time.  Great fishing when you can't get the boat into the water.

Just walk up to the pond, being very quiet, and about 10 feet from the pond throw your bait just in case there is a bass where you are going to fish, being sure to cast to the right, left and in front of your spot.

Fish it just as if you were on a lake, throwing crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, other topwaters, Senkos and finesse worms. The fish will tell you what they want and at what depth.

When moving around the shore, stay about 50 feet or more from the shore as the bass can tell when you are approaching.

Just go out and have some fun and fish.  Early AM and late PM are always good times for pond or lake fishing.

Now, what school is in on the eastern shore of Virginia?  Or do you go to school in Maryland?  Just curious.

Thanks for the tips on being stealthy.  Would those apply in choppy water on a heavily navigated river?

I've thought about buying a kayak, but my issues with that are 1) where would I store it (small townhome) 2) loading/unstrapping it to the top of the car may be a hassle.

I would also love to have a boat, but me have the same problem, my dad is getting him doc. in teaching. He thought he make a good income for the family of 5 with a masters, but with economy in the going down the tube, and going fast at that, a masters won't cut it!

But salvation my come soon! We saw a nice boat for sale at 5,500 and he's really considering save a few hundred bucks per 1,500 pay check, to get it. And it looks sea worthy to, so it could be a salt and fresh water boat!

Seems odd to me that when I was fishing from shore I'd try to cast as far from shore as I could, but when in a boat would try to cast as near the bank as possible.

yep, its the eastern shore community college.  will be transfering to ODU next year.  we have ALOT of small farm ponds.  i can think of 4 that anyone can go to and LOTS more that i could possibly get permission to fish.  have one here that a guy caught a 7 lb bass.  pretty good for a little farm pond lol.  plenty of freshwater here.  thanks for all the replies!
