You may want to chek out Hunting Run Lake before it closes on Oct. 13th. You need a permit to fish it, available at the lake. Check the Spotsylvania County web site for information.

Please obtain a copy of the Virginia Departmente of Game and Inland Fisheries "Freshwater Fishing in Virginia" for places to fish in your area.

Fort A.P. Hill has ponds and the license fee is only $20 a year. The military complex is on Route 301 in Caroline County and is an easy drive from Fredericksburg.

Up at Quantico Marine Base there are places to fish so check out the base or contact "Rondef" on this site for more details.

Check out a local map of the city for ponds in office parks and apartment complexes, too.

Be sure to have your Virginia fishing license with you when you go fishing.

South of you is Bass Pro Shop, Green Top and Gander Mountain plus you have a Gander Mountain on Route 3 heading west.  So ask the guys at your Gander Mountain for suggestions for bank fishing.

Both Stafford and Spottsy Counties Parks and Rec departments may be able to give you some places to fish, too.

Let us know where you go and how you do.  :)

Beavis,

There is a pond behind the Central Park Shopping Center off Route 3 that I have seen while driving by on I-95 but have never stopped to fish.

If no one says anything about this pond you may want to give it a shot and let us know how you do.  :)

I always see this pond when I'm driving down to my friends farm pond and have always been tempted to wet a hook in it. Maybe one day I'll stop by and see what the deal is.

Sam, I may have to try that pond out one day since it is not that far from my house.  I have driven past this numerous times and never even thought about checking it out, I guess I should one day.

Rondef,

Either you, me or Andrew are sure to give it a shot.

It looks too nice to pass up.  :)

I will be checking the ponds out within the next week or so. I will let you know what I tink of it after I go. It looks pretty sweet on msnmaps.com.

looks different on google maps then it does driving by on the highway. This is the pond behind the white biulding with the grafitti on it right? I might be imagining the grafitti but I'm pretty sure it's there. Google maps kinda makes it look like two bodies of water too....

Let us know how it goes Ron! Save some fish for us if fishing is permitted! :)

You might want to give Ni River Reservoir a try. It has a pretty expansive length of bank to fish from. I was there about this time last year and caught a few on weightless T-rigged Senkos right off the bank that were pinning baitfish against the bank. Keep an eye out for surface activity. The place is also a pretty good crappie fishery from the bank. There are a bunch of stumps about 6-12 inches high that extend from the bank out into deeper water.

Another option is a small pond in the city park north of Mary Washington college. They stock it with trout in the winter, but I've been told there are also some bass in it.

Good point Wayne. I forgot to mention that they rent boats there, and that you need a Fredericksburg city license. Mott's Run is another possibility, I have never fished it==but it probably closes on the 13th Like Ni and Huntsman. I think it also has boats for rent.

You are correct about the boat rentals at Motts, that lake is a city lake and the other two lakes are county lakes. The operating dates may be a little different, but I doubt it. A permit for Motts included Ni before Hunting Run was opened, now Ni and Hunting Run are together on the permits and Motts is separate.

I think I need a Ph.D. to follow what is open, closed and which ones need permits, etc.

Why can't the County just make it simple?  ;D

If it were simple then the government wouldn't be involved.

Wow small world I am originally from Stafford, and I know where half of those spots are. Man do I wish I was back in Virginia.

(by the way I have a top secret honey hole up there)

Hey Beavis.  Right in town if you look up "Falls Hill Ave" and "Riverside Dr" on google maps you will find the intersection there on the Rap.  This intersection has a dirt parking lot.  If you park here (yes, parking here is legal.  It is considered a small park), there is a path on riverside dr you can walk down by the bend in the river.  There is shorefishing for smallies for about 75 - 100 yards without having to get in the water at all with a path all the way down.  I've caught some above a pound here but mostly 8-10 inchers.  Still smallie fishing is smallie fishing and it's an easy way to kill an afternoon.

If you are interested in wading in the spring I will look you up.  My dad and I and some of our friends frequent that part of the Rap and catch plenty of smallies around the 2lb range on a regular basis.

Also if you want largemouth, you can head down to the Fredericksburg city docks and fish along shore there.  The population is not huge but there is plenty of ground to cover around the docks and parking lot areas.  You may want to give old Cossey Pond a look on the VDGIF website.  They stock it with trout in the winter months and YES there are bass there as my friend Troy catches them on a fairly consistent basis (nothing huge).

Other places not listed include the Rapidan River off route 3 (pm for for details if interested, great smallie fishing in certain areas here) and also Phelps Pond on the Phelps Wildlife Management area (don't have too much info on it, but suppossed to have largemouth).
