BMBass Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 It's looking like my wife and I are going to be relocating to Maryland this Spring. Any good recommendations on fishing holes near Odenton/Crofton? Looks like I may have a new fishing partner lol…I live in Annapolis Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted March 1, 2013 Super User Posted March 1, 2013 Really need to get out fishing, so heading out tomorrow just have no idea where. Black Hills is open but may do lower Potomac to get a run in my friends boat. Just not sure how crapped out the river is right now. Anyone have any thoughts on where to go? Quote
Dramer77 Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Thanks for the clarification Dramer. For some reason, I was thinking the lock gates on the lower section had little to no water around them (the one on the toe path side had a little from what I remember). When did you catch bass out of the upper section last? I know when the hurricane came through last fall, something happened that caused the upper section to be all but completely drained. I believe I had post after one of my friends sent me a few that he had taken. The pic I had taken looks at least 3' low, which didn't leave much water for any of the larger bass to survive. When I was there, I saw a couple small bass (maybe 8") but that was it. honestly i cant rem if it was before or after.. a good buddy of mine fishes there and the hot wall a good bit Quote
basser89 Posted March 3, 2013 Author Posted March 3, 2013 Got to wet some line yesterday morning. Decided to see how the action was at dam 4. I got there literally within minutes of day break. LOL! I was a little taken back to see 3 boats launching as I walked down to the rip rap. Took some time to figure out there were active fish in the area I was fishing. Turned out, those active fish were walleye. I only managed 3 but they were decent. The smallest was about 15" while the biggest (and the one I caught first) was around 20-22". The first 2 came on an X-Rap while the 3rd came on a Bomber Fat-A crank. I was able to sneak over to Williamsport for a short stay (no luck there). I talked to one of the guys fishing the canal briefly. He told me that some of the fish from the lower section of the canal were put in the upper section. Sadly, he also told me that he seen at least 100 fish laying in the lower section that they did nothing with while they finished draining that section. Quote
Dramer77 Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 oh man that sucks about the canal... at d**n 4 do you walk down to where the water drains down to the river? i might head over there when i have time and its alittle nicer Quote

I have fished right where the canal comes in to the Potomac before, it's a little tough to fish right there now with the current water levels. I've also had success right below the island on the "sandy" section of the bank. I didn't make it down that far yesterday. Quote
nastynate Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Despite the cold and windy weather 4 of us launched the bass raiders yesterday evening in pursuit of the almighty smallmouth. Had a great time and some great action. Among the 4 of us we managed to land 20 fish from the cold water. The fish were staged a couple feet from the bank and were not shy when the lure caught there eye. Here are two that made it all worth while. Keirston caught hers on a Rapala original jerk bait perch color and Brandon caught his on a root bear spider jig. Quote

pagliaroj Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Anyone have a good idea where to take the kayak out in the Hagerstown/Williamsport area this weekend? I heard it is suppose to be close to 60! Quote
Dramer77 Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 the conococheague would be nice for kayaking... theres some decent smallmouth in there Quote
pagliaroj Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Thanks Dramer, where is the best spot to get on the water? Quote
basser89 Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 Thanks Dramer, where is the best spot to get on the water? There's a boat ramp just down from the mouth of the conococheague. That would probably be the easiest spot to put in. If you're comfortable doing it, there is a dirt path that people drive on that leads from the boat ramp over to the mouth. You could drive over and drop your kayak off (I wouldn't leave my vehicle parked there) and park back in a parking spot. Warning though, I've walked that before and there is broken glass along there. Bill Poch Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 My brothers and I are hitting Black Hills Sat. morning in the jon boat. I've never fished this early in the year there, doubt we'll catch anything, but hey, I just enjoy being on the water. I have a baitcaster that my father in law gave me and I've never used one before, so I'm sure I'll be spending most my time fixing the birds nest all day long. Quote
nastynate Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Who's getting out this weekend. Plan to hit some ponds in PA after work today with my buddy. Hope put the boat in the water Saturday and play around with the new fish finder. Weather looks like its finally gonna make the turn. Lets go 3 o'clock ready to get out of Baltimore and he'd back to the hills. Quote
basser89 Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 I have my daughter this weekend so won't be doing much fishing. I may make an early morning outing and hit the river somewhere before I pick her up. Bill, let us know how you do! I was in Germantown for a little while this morning and did get to pop over to Black Hills just to check the water out. The backwash area down by the boat ramp was very stained/muddy looking, obviously the main lake looked better. If the backwash area is any sign, the area back around the stick ups is probably in the same condition. I would venture a guess the upper end of the ten mile creek arm is the same as well. ****** One other note about Black Hills. You CAN NOT get to Black Hills off 355! They have the road closed right at the 270 bridge but you can still get to the park off of 121. They have the road blocked off right after the park road. If I read the sign correctly, they'll reopen the road sometime in April. ******* Best of luck hitting the ponds in PA Nate! Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 8, 2013 Super User Posted March 8, 2013 I will try to get my boat and gear ready this weekend and fish next. School and work has me soo far behind the power curve this year. Allen Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Will do Baser, I've been watching youtube vids for winter bass fishing this week. I went out and picked up a few jerkbaits and added a few more jigs to my tackle box. We'll be putting the boat in at 6:30am and will fish until about 1:00. It's suppose to be 29 degrees at 6:00 in the morning, YIKES!! Quote

Now when I go back to visit my parents, I just can't wait to get back on my side of the bay bridge. Planning on going out Sunday morning. Ive heard a couple people say they've had luck with squarebills but I dunno. The water still seems pretty cold. Looking forward to some warmer temps. I can't wait for some sweet topwater action! 1 Quote
Bill Poch Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Got out Sat morning at Blackhills with my brothers. Put in at 7:00am and fished to about 1:30. Water was pretty stained and it was cold! We took the boat past the bridge and way back to the right and worked our way back. We didn't even get a bite, but we also don't have any clue about cold water bass fishing. We've yet to get a depth/fish finder and thought would have helped us if we had one. For the most part we were using jigs and I was going back and forth between a jig and a jerk bait. Later in the day I tried worms on a shaky head. I really didn't expect to catch anything, but it was fun being out there anyway. In 2 weeks we are heading up to Dam 5 since we should be getting our 9.8HP outboard back and fixed this week. 1 Quote
sprirobass Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I got a chance to go out for a couple hours this afternoon. Went to Kings pond and Black Hills near the bridge. I managed to catch one at kings pond on a chatterbait with zman craw trailer. By the way, does anyone know a good spot for crappie at Black hills? 1 Quote
JigMe Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Went out as well, got a couple with KVD 1.5 at Centennial Lake. Where is Kings pond, is that Martin luther king park on jackson road? 1 Quote
sprirobass Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 @JigMe: Kings pond/Kings park is in Clarksburg, off rt. 355. Quote
