really? i know its low in spots ... what kind of boat do you have?

Its a prop motor, most of the Upper Potomac is way to shallow to trust running a prop. There a multiple places you can wade clear across the river. Even down in Montgomery County (Whites Ferry) sections are very shallow. When I fish with a friend in his jet boat you can feel the water pressure pushing the floor of the boat up from being squeezed between the river bottom and the bottom of the boat out in the middle. Great fishing though.

Xpress X-18, it is a 18' aluminum boat with a 150hp Mercury outboard. You should see it a lot around Hagerstown as I try to fish as much as I can.

Maryland guys, anyone here familiar with the Mallows Bay area of the Potomac?  I and some friends have a little mini-tournament there on March 17th.  I've never fished a river before, just ponds and relatively small lakes.  Looking for some ideas on where and what to fish at that time of year.

Thanks!

Personally I would consider running down to the end of Aquia, there are some large grass beds down there. Fish any emergent grass you find.

Nice rig you have Allen! That explains why you stick to Big Slackwater and 4 Locks! My jon would defintely draft shallower than yours. That is the reason I can put in at Taylors, Snyders and even Williamsport (when I do get it out). Even when I run my little 15HP, I'm constantly watching the fish finder and reading the water for shallow spots. Anything less than 3' and I slow WAY down or drop the trolling motor until it gets deeper. Had to let the registration run out (since I'm still on the job hunt), so it's in storage until then. Hopefully things pick up and I can actually get it out!

I have fished Mallows Bay for decades.  BE CAREFUL and don't get too close to the wrecks, there are iron rods sticking up that can screw up a boat fast.  Look at Google Earth for the layout of the bay.  Also, expect to loose some baits to snagging in the wrecks.

Here is a link to a website you'll find interesting.

That is the difference between good moderation and little to no moderation makes; and is a prime example of why BR is as good as it is.

I only read the tour articles.

Thanks for the link and the input! I suspect the guy that organized our tournament season picked Mallows Bay is because he has fished it in numerous tourneys he's fished in while the other 5 of us are unfamiliar with out, so we gotta do some research.

Hello everyone again. Just got my computer running after several months of problems. Had to replace the hard drive...just robbed from an older one that had a disk drive go bad. That was an experience...took days to figure it out, update and re-introduce everything. I'll echo sentiments on Allen's boat. We've got an old beat up 10 foot Ouacita aluminum jon with a one inch hole that needs patched. Got a small Minn-Kota trolling motor that my brother gave us. No registration and title bought boat when I was 13 and living in Delaware...it has a registration from their dated 1983...guess I could back there and do it somehow. It sounds a little complicated here in WV although at our size it's free...probably would have to pay personal property taxes on it too. Not sure about getting our Non-Resident licenses for MD this year...gas is high...we usually fish Middletown, Sharpsburg and Brownsville Ponds...all 3 pretty much sucked last year for some reason. Fished Greenbriar once and was checked by DNR. Got lucky because I had my son's and mine in my wallet and it took a little while to find. But no problems once I found it. We did have good(for us)luck on the smallies in the Potomac near Shepherdstown. We'll just get our WV and knock around the Panhandle I guess. If you all decide to have another Get-Together we would get licenses then. Realy regret not going last time but son wouldn't get up and I didn't want to travel by myself. Also didn't want someone to carry him in their boat with him not being able to tie his own knots. We would have just fished from shore together if there was a place hear by the gathering spot. Do appreciate Brian's offer to help out on the phone though. Thanks again Brian. Just wanted to check in and let everyone know we're still around but not reporting much yet. Hope everyone can have a good fishing season.

The bite was on yesterday. Stopped by the creek on my way home from work to meet up with my buddy Brandon to catch the last two hours of day light. Fished a sunny bank on the outside current with some deep holes. Throwing my hair jigs working them to a medium pace with some pauses. Landed 3 and lost 2. There looking healthy.

It's looking like my wife and I are going to be relocating to Maryland this Spring.  Any good recommendations on fishing holes near Odenton/Crofton?

Do you have a boat? A lot of good places in the area.

We were fishing the conococheague outside of Williamsport. We were throwing hair jigs and tubes. I didn't have my tackle with me so all I had was one jig. Arctic fox with a blue craw baby rage craw. Where were you and your wife fishing?

Congrats to your wife! I've been by kemps mill a few times but never wet a line there.

I had to make a run to my storage in Williamsport the other day and swung by the C&O. Sad to see they drained the lower section of the canal as well now. Looks like they're doing something to the lock, not sure if they're going to get it back to working condition again and actually re-connect the 2 sections? No matter the reason, looks like that fishery won't be good for a number of years.  :(

they drained the lower section because the one lock gate was leaking pretty bad, they were fixing it...i have caught some in the upper section right there though, where that little stream comes out..

Thanks for the clarification Dramer. For some reason, I was thinking the lock gates on the lower section had little to no water around them (the one on the toe path side had a little from what I remember).

When did you catch bass out of the upper section last? I know when the hurricane came through last fall, something happened that caused the upper section to be all but completely drained. I believe I had post after one of my friends sent me a few that he had taken. The pic I had taken looks at least 3' low, which didn't leave much water for any of the larger bass to survive. When I was there, I saw a couple small bass (maybe 8") but that was it.

I think you'll find there's a lot to choose from; what kind of fishing do you prefer?

Try these for starters:  http://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/bass/index.asp   http://www.dnr.state.md.us/

Right now I do a lot of kayak fishing for Largemouth on small water here in the Midwest.  Kind of looking for the same types of holes around there since I don't have a boat and probably won't real soon, anyway.
