Also BMBass, don't overlook the smallie fishing in the rivers this time of year. You can rack up some good numbers and stay cool at th same time by wading...just watch the river levels. Lot's of good water, the Upper Potomac has the most access. But any tributary has smallmouth too, and the other rivers too.

For lakes, BH is hard to beat, the best shore access of the lakes IMHO, but others are good too...Piney Run, Clopper Lake, Needwood, Frank, and the Baltimore Reservoirs. When Liberty is low, you can really get around and cover some water, and there are some pig smallies and largemouth in there for sure. Fishing isn't easy there, but when they are active, you can do well and maybe get yourself a PB!

I'll piggy back on the wading the Upper Potomac. I'm from Frederick so Harpers Ferry and Point of Rocks are really close to me and those are two spots I like to try and hit. For Point of Rocks I like to park on the VA side at the boat ramp and wade over to the MD side. The VA side is pretty easy wading and the MD side holds all the holes and rock ledges those big boys like to hide in. A few weeks ago the the river gauge was at 1.2 feet and it was cake, very manageable, right now it's 2.15. It's only a foot higher but it could be a little sketchy once you get closer to the MD side. I think I've read somewhere that if you want to safely wade Point of Rocks it should be 1.7 or lower. I've only really worked up river on the other side of the island above the bridge. But it looks like you can wade all over the place. A few weeks ago about 7:00 was when the bite seemed to pick up.

As for Harpers Ferry, I park up on Harpers Ferry road on the MD side. There are a few spots you can get out and bounce around on the rocks. It's not a place for clumsy folks, you have to be pretty agile to get around safely.

Also, if anybody is going to be out at BH tomorrow night I'm taking a buddy down there after work. Going to hit the stick ups for a bit then move over to the boat ramp area around 7:00ish. He's just got into fishing and I've tried to take him to a creek I fish, but he can't swim and his wife is paranoid about him being in 2' of water. So, I figured I see if I can get him some fish at BH.

Oh great, this might be the last time I invite him. He just texted me saying his brother and Dad may come. I was looking for a fishing buddy, not fishing party. Although his Dad is suppose to be pretty Pro, so maybe I'll learn something.

Thanks guys, ive been wanting to catch some smallies again. I caught a 4.5lb small mouth last year in a small pond by Deep Creek Lake. Looks like I have some new spots! Thanks again

wow, thanks Bill. I am going to hit those spots this weekend, hehe.

Guys, I am heading out to Deep Creek this weekend, does anyone have any tips? I haven't been there in years.

At BH, I see people talking about "backwash" and "the sticks" im sure they are spots in the area. How easy are they to find?

Hey Bill, depending on what time I get out of the gig I may drive over to BH. I don't have my fishing rods in my car, but it would be nice to meet someone else from the boards.

Hey BMBass,

Welcome to THE boards!

The backwash area is down by the boat ramp. Its the area on the other side of the road that you can't get a boat in. The "stick ups", as its come to be know as, is not that hard to find. Basically, if you park in the back parking lot between the playground and the volleyball court and walk back through the woods and make a right when the trail splits, you're looking right at it (minus the leaves. LOL). If you have any specific questions about those areas, let me know and I'll try and help out the best I can!

On a separate note on Black Hills, after 6 years (if memory serves me right) of not stocking tiger muskies there, DNR has started the program again. Anyone else heard this or caught any of the fingerlings yet?

Yep, they put 3,000 of them in last week, all 4" fingerlings.

The trout hatchery here in wash. co. had tons of musky fingerlings. They were not being released here in wash. co. so i dont know where they went to.

Man I had a hawg break my line off today...I was at local spot Water Works park out here in Annapolis. I was using a senko wacky rig style, 8lb fluorocarbon P-line floroclear. I hooked it and lost it pulling it through the lilly. My buddy caught a 8lb largemouth there last week. I lost one last month the same way, after that I told myself Im going to get some braided line. Fool me once, shame on you..fool me twice, shame on me.

Im going to get some braided line!

Drove into BH yesterday to see what the water looked like in the backwash area. Amazed at how overgrown it's gotten since I was last there just over two weeks ago! On that note it did look like prime time froggin territory. I may need to fill the other spool for my reel with some braid and try to catch my first fish on a frog! Or a super fluke over the tops of the submerged weeds...

My wife dropped a bomb on me this morning when she told me she has to work from Friday-Sunday so it looks like I won't be getting out till the following weekend. :cry4:

Yesterday at BH I only managed 1 little guy on a 4" lizard back in the stickup. Drove over to the backwash around 8:00 to finish the night up. No love there. It was a little crowded and 1 guy was burning a buzzbait the entire time I was there, he didn't hit anything either.

I saw a few big guys cruising through the tubes but they didn't want anything to do with what I was throwing out. I was considering just jumping in and trying to hand catch them.

I tired a frog back in the stick ups, it's just a top water plastic frog that I must have bought awhile ago when I used to fish. No love there. I did just pick up a strike king frog on Ebay for 6 bucks brand new, but I don't think that will be here until Fri.

I think I may roll back down to BH's tonight after work. I have the night free to fish and I'm not sure where I want to go. Maybe I'll check out google maps and look for a different place to try at BH's. That place is so hit and miss for me, but it's called fishing, not catching.

My buddy I invited worked his way out of my "fishing buddy list" It was not very relaxing at all. He would fish 3' next to me and every time I tried to move away, he'd follow. He's a cool dude, but not fishing buddy cool. He's got a short fuse and would get extremely frustrated over trying to tie his line and really wouldn't let me do it for him. He was able to catch a small guy too, so I felt good about him at least catching something since he's just getting into it.

Anybody know a part time Mercury outboard mechanic? Just thought I'd throw a line out there. . .

Yes, his name is Scott and he use to work for Bowers Marine in Hagerstown. I lost his number but I am working on contacting him about replacing my water pump. I will contact you once I get his info.

Hit the stick ups tonight from 6 -8, nothing. I'm renaming Black Hills to "Soul Crusher". Man that place can make you feel like you have no idea how to fish. I'll be hitting my honey hole creek Thurs night to actually catch some fish.

Just got back from my trip to Black Lake in upper New York. Had a great week of fishing, lots of good smallies and largemouth. Also had a couple bonus fish, a pike and a 12-13 bowfin. The bowfin was my first ever, ugly but amazing strong. Most fish were caught on jigs, thanks to Northstar and Rage Tail. I added a few pics below, my boater has the other will post more when he sends them to me.

Nice fish BMB! It looks like no fishing for me this weekend since I have to travel to NYC for a funeral. I might try to squeeze in a couple of hours at sunrise tomorrow at BH but it's doubtful.

Been pretty quiet on the thread lately. Anybody getting any fishing done out there???

Hey all,

I haven't been out in awhile, it's just been too hot. Yesterday was the first time I'd been over to Black Hills in a couple weeks. Didn't have a lot of time so I only got in about 30 minutes yesterday evening over at the backwash. I didn't catch anything, but man that thing sure is overgrown now! I was fishing wacky rigged senkos but with the short time I really should've been powerfishing; probably should have gone with a lipless crank to try and cut through some of the green.

Ken I can see you're probably out for this weekend, I may go out Sat or Sun morning. Let me know if you can do tomorrow AM.

Got out to big pool this morning not knowing how the fishing would be and in my suprise bagged roughly 17Lb limit in about 3 hours. I dont usually fish big pool to often but i think this is a very exceptional day of fishing here. These 2 fish were todays kickers first fish went 5.7 on the berkley digi scale didnt weigh the second one but i estimate the around the same weight.
