Weasel07 Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Weasel, I fish centennial park almost every week. Lake elkhorn, and wilde lake have some decent size bass in them as well. I have never fished at Orchard nature preserve, where is that place located by the way? Piney Orchard Nature Preserve is in Odenton, and unfortunately is a resident only fishing area. No boats, and strictly catch and release. It is south of 175 on Telegraph Road, until you get to Sandy Walk Way, follow that all the way to the end and then there's a short walk to the lake. It has some serious fish in it though, I lost about a 6 pounder yesterday, fishing a lizard on a wacky rig. Quote

Kool deal. probably not a good idea for me to fish there then, unless there is a way to get a permission to fish? Quote
basser89 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 Was able to get out saturday morning for couple hours in the rain. With the limited time I had, decided to just hit the stick ups which paid off. Only managed 2 but both were on the Powell Diesel rod I picked up a while back so finally broke in that rod. I was throwing a Strike King KVD frog in pumpkin/orange throat. Definitely made the right call on the color cause both bass (one about a pound, second MAYBE 2 pounds) inhaled it. Anyone else make it out over the weekend? Quote
Fat Boy Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 My fishing life has changed. Last week I purchased a 16' Alumaweld stick steer boat with a 60/40 hp jet drive outboard teamed with an 80 lb. Minn Kota trolling motor from a buddy of mine (who is splurging to buy a RiverPro LoPro and is on his way home trailering it as I type this). I picked it up on Saturday and after a few Fat Boy customizations and tackle loading, I took it out for a few hours yesterday on the Upper Potomac. Even though it's a '93 boat with a 2001 motor, it's still new to me, and at least I'll be able to be on the water. I've caught a lot of fish out of the back of this boat, so it's about time I turn the tables and catch me a few from the front!!!! Here are the first pics of the boat trailered behind my truck The next issue was getting the boat into my driveway after a 90 degree turn with a tree in my neighbors yard making it tight, then, up the steep hill in reverse and into the carport. I made it! So, my new boat sits in the carport, fits perfectly I told my wife to come outside and meet her son, and my daughter to meet her baby brother LOL Those statements didn't go over very well... I'm so stoked! So anyway, I took it out yesterday for a few hours, caught 12 smallies and 4 largemouth, biggest smallie was 15" or so. I lost a pig at the boat side, coming unbuttoned after running under the boat toward my trolling motor. My buddy caught 9 smallies and five largemouth, with one of the greenies pushing three pounds or more. I spent a lot of time goofing around and running through some skinny water, had a great time and even caught a few fish. I picked an easy location to run the first time out on the Upper Potomac...I was actually surprised that the fishing was as good as it was. I can't wait to put some extra time and do some spot explorin' I was really happy with the way that the boat handled and ran! We also did some old fashion drifting tossing super flukes with quite a few of our fish coming on them. I love that bite...can't wait to get out and do it on some better water. Here are some pics of some "firsts" since I took ownership: First fish on the boat under my ownership, from the back of the boat, Howard with a dink smallie photographed "In-Fisherman" style My first fish caught a few minutes later, another dink First Potomac "keeper" smallie: First decent largemouth caught again by Howard from the back: Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted July 16, 2012 Super User Posted July 16, 2012 Congrats Fat Boy!!!! Looks great. Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Congrats FB!! I've been droppping hints to my wife about getting a boat similar to the one you have. All I have to do now is buy a SUV to tow it and another house with a garage big enough to out it in since the one car garage in my towhouse ain't going to do it. Congrats again, I'm sure you're going to have plently more memories with that boat under your ownership now. Quote
basser89 Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 Congrats on boat Kevin! Good to see you were able to get it out and break it in too! Quote
Fat Boy Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Thanks guys...hopefully I can reduce the honeydo list and get some use out of it this weekend. Quote
nastynate Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 No honeydos for me. as long as the river dosnt come way up im out there. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted July 20, 2012 Super User Posted July 20, 2012 Good luck everyone, leaving in the morning for a week at Black Lake in NY. Can't wait to get fishing Saturday morning. Quote
basser89 Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 Obviously you're on your way up now Brian but safe travels and great fishing! Not sure how bad you guys got hit up in Washington county last evening with the storms but we got HAMMERED in Germantown! Curious to see how bad Black Hills looks. I was hoping to get out this weekend somewhere. My only limitation is getting the resume wrapped up before I do. Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Good luck this weekend everybody!! I'm planning on heading out to Black Hills early Sunday morning if time allows. Hopefully the rains cause the water temps to lower a bit which will perhaps result in a little more action than what I've experienced on the banks. Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Managed to get out this morning at BH. Got two blowups on a frog, but didn't hookup. Switched to a fluke and managed four, one dink and the other three all between 2-3 lbs. All the action was over by the stickups, not where everyone typically goes, but instead trekked over to the point. Turned out to be a good decision... Quote
Bill Poch Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Hit BH with my brother this afternoon. Nothing at the stickups. Caught one little guy over by the backwash. Not much action for us today. Quote
basser89 Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 I was able to hit the backwash area this morning for a few hours. Managed 3 and missed 2 others. 2 came on a Strike King buzzbait and the other came on a Strike King Frog. Biggest of the day was a 3-3 that came on the buzzbait. Quote
Bill Poch Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Anybody know a part time Mercury outboard mechanic? We have a late 70's 9.8 that we can't get the thing to shift right. My brothers have been working on it and now they can't get the lower piece back onto the motor. They are pretty much stuck. This is the motor we got with the free boat and had it out once. There is a Mercury Dealer up in Thurmont but they want $90 an hour in labor and I'm sure it's going to be pricey to have them fix it. We are not really in the position to drop 500 - 600 bucks on the thing right now. Just thought I'd throw a line out there. . . Quote
BMBass Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Greetings all, Im in the Annapolis area. Right now I only know of a few bass spots in the area to fish for bass. Water Works park, Tuckahoe state park are the only two spots ive found decent large mouth. Im a non-boater so that hurts. Anyone know of any other good spots? Thanks Brandon Quote
KenLattimore Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Here are a couple of pics of what I caught on Sunday. Quote
Fat Boy Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Nice fish Ken!!! Congrats! BMBass, I recommend reading this entire thread from start to finish. There's a ton of info on here about spots, what to use, and a lot of us shore fish too. Good luck and most of all, welcome aboard! 1 Quote

I tried out a new area not far removed from the stickups and it paid off for me. I may have been able to get a couple of more, but my buddy was growing impatient since he wasn't getting anything. I should have ignored him and stayed considering we trekked back to the stickups before heading home and caught nothing. I guess I should have listened to that old saying, "Don't leave fish to find fish". Quote
Fat Boy Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I guess I should have listened to that old saying, "Don't leave fish to find fish". Yep, those big ones are there for a reason! Quote
BMBass Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Thanks FatBoy, after viewing the history i'm going to give BH a try in a few weeks. Quote
