Hey guys, I got a chance to get out to Greenbrier yesterday evening. Spent about two hours throwing lipless cranks and plastics but came up empty handed. Still looking for a chance to get out on the boat so I can get on the board this season.

Posted

Brian, I keep forgetting about the club scenario, that makes sense. My take was more for the non-club mindset.

pagliaroj, were you able to get a temp reading? It's been a few years since I've actually fished Greenbrier and can't remember how much cooler that place runs from the other bodies of water around. Given that Black Hills is in the middle of the spawn now, that may make sense on why you came up empty handed with the lipless cranks if the temps are close to what they are running at Black Hills. Good to see you getting out! Still not sure when I'll be able to get out next. I just received my order of spinnerbaits that I had made, it's killing me to get out and try them out!!!! :)

Bill, here is the link to the DNR's list of boat ramps http://www.dnr.state...g/boatramps.asp

The one I am thinking of in Montgomery County is Seneca Creek/Seneca Creek Landing, after you go out of Seneca Creek and hit the river turn right. There is a series of islands which have good fishing around. As always keep a good eye out for shallow areas. The Washington County place is Dargen Bend.

Thanks a lot!

Hey all. Just moved back to MD after six years in AZ. Glad to be fishing again, have been to Gunner's Lake a few times and although I picked bad days, to Little Seneca and Clopper Lakes. Don't have a boat now, renting a townhouse in Germantown. Anyone need a bass buddy just let me know!

Here's a picture of my fishing competition this morning at Gunner's. If you'll notice, there's about a 10-12" bass on the bird's beak! Tried to get closer but he flew off to the other side of the lake, was awesome to watch the bird hunting.

Welcome to THE boards DewWhat! There's several anglers on this thread around Germantown (as you've probably noticed).

Hi DewWhat! basser89 is right there are several of us around Germantown including many bank fishers and I think we're all kind of running into each other here and there. So far everyone I've met in person is top notch. I think fishermen in general are a very friendly bunch, there's something about being one with the land that seems to bring out the best in people. I love it!

It seems like you're getting out to the right places which means you'll probably start running into us of course you might not even know it. I've started to make a point to throw the forum into conversation if I hit it off with someone just to make sure I'm not talking to someone in the flesh I sort of know online. A lot of guys will also post when they go out and some of us even have sort of a regular frequency with which we go out.

I've only fished Gunner's Lake a couple times when I barely knew anything about bass fishing, but I've heard there are bass in there. I drive by there often and I've noticed a lot more people spread out around the lake fishing than I'd ever noticed before.

Lastly welcome to the boards and I hope to see you out on the water some times!

Welcome dewwhat....add me to the list of guys in germantown. I am tied up this week but should be shore fishing next week after work.

Heading over to fish black hills today with a friend from club. He is really good on bh so hopefully will get into a few.

I want to welcome all the new posters and tell them what a great palce they have found. I just finished a 50 hour/6 day week. My son and I might get out to Sharpsburg, Middletown and maybe Potomac today. Just depends on him getting awake this afternoon. We haven't been out to say the least. I thought when the year started I wouldn't be working like last year...but so far the last two months that hasn't been the case. I would still like to get down to Black Hills. Maybe some Monday when my wife and I are thrift store shopping I can head down and check it out...maybe even get a line wet if I can find a place.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

TheKingFisher: I guess I've pulled out about 12 bass from Gunner's in 3 trips, nothing worth noting, but after 6 years of NO FISHING they were very cool for me. Also want to try the Kentlands. And I see a few VERY tempting roadside ponds along 28 & Gude down in Rockville, near work, that I want to try. Not sure if they are public though :(

Brian: If the weather is as good as they say for the upcoming week I will be out, too. May try Clopper again. It's free to get in during the week :) I just lost 3 lures the last time I went thanks to the Beaver activity. I do love Gunner's for the easy access.

Hope to see you guys out. I usually have a blue Nationals hat on and I drive a black camaro. Say hey if you see me.

Got out this morning from about 8:15-12:30, met Ken over at black hills. He landed 2 and I pulled in 1. Tried throwing everything from spinner to senko to crayfish. Everything has slowed wayyy down, but hopefully with it warming up this next week things will get back to normal (plus spawn doesnt help). Any luck today Brian and did you go toward the stick ups?

Fish at BH from 9am to 6:30pm yesterday, not one of my better days. Could not seem to hook up, kept getting bite and missing on the hookset. The friend I was with got a few nice ones, but bite did turn tough in the afternoon. Glad to get a day like that out of the way before the tourney next weekend.....

Welcome to the board DewWhat!

I believe I know one of the ponds you're referring to on 28 and Gude. If it's the same one I was wondering if it was public too. I've actually pulled over to get a better look lasr summer and couldn't figure out how to gain access to it though. It definitely looks VERY interesting.

I'm sure we'll run into each other at Black Hills over the summer.

Good luck!

Welcome to the three new guys! Great guys on here for sure.

I've been skunked that past four trips in a row:

Trip 1: trolled the Bay for stripers near the Bay Bridge - skunked, no hits...

Trip 2: musky fished, had a musky roll on my lure but missed, no other action, skunked again...

Trip 3: trolled the Bay for stripers near Pt. Lookout - skunked, no hits...

Trip 4: trolled the Bay for stripers near the Bay Bridge again, one hit, no hook ups, skunked again...

You'd think that I'd learn. I've never been skunked in back to back trips (save for one time during foul weather where I couldn't stay home), much less four trips in a row. I H8 trolling. I miss bass fishing. I hope to get out tomorrow evening for some willing largemouth - I hope.

We had a club tournament last weekend and I caught at least 15 keepers. From reading other posts I think you guys need to slow down and fish more methodically. White spinnerbaits work well at time there but not all the time? Everyone was throwing one last weekend and no fish were caught using them.

Went to Gunner's Lake after work yesterday and I got skunked :( First time I've went there and caught nothing. Left after two hours.

I did see 3 other fisherman pull in some tiny 6-8" bass. Also saw a 3-4lb male guarding a bed near the south side fishing pier.

This is my first year in Germantown (I'm from Hagerstown) and my guess is there isn't much time left to fish Gunner's. It's weeding/mucking up really fast and it's a constant lure cleaning challenge. Plus, during 80% of my casts with soft plastics yesterday, I could feel gunk on the lure immediately after casting and allowing it to sink a bit. Guess I'm going to be moving to Clopper and/or BH.

Well, I fished a pond w/Monocacy and shook off the skunk monster! No big ones, but lots of action on Senkos. He caught several bass too on plastic worms, Senkos and lizards.

I've gotten out twice this week.

Monday night I hit up a creek near my Mom's house. It's starting to get active back there. The blue gill bite was on but no so much the smallmouth. Only got 1 smaller one. Did catch 2 spotted bass, I think that's what they were, had red eyes. I like hitting that place up, I've never seen anybody else fishing back there. I've made a custom google map of the place if any of you guys are interested in checking it out. http://maps.google.c...2399a7bb69b11aa

I hit up the Monacocy last night, but it was a little chilly when the sun got behind the clouds. The river was very low and clear. Again the blue gill bite was on and caught a bunch of those guys. Managed one little smallmouth. I did see a nice sized catfish swim by.

For the Fredneck guys that like fishing the Monacocy, here's some of the spots I fish at Pinecliff park. http://maps.google.c...4c6f275ea730859

If you fish my spots I want pictures :P

Right now I've been using only a 2" rebel crawfish crankbait in red. Green/oragne seem to be pretty good in that river too.

I hope to get back out Sat. afternoon with my brother.

Guess I'll be going to BH tomorrow morning to bank fish. I've only been there once (not counting a time about 10 years ago). Do you guys have any advice? From my last trip it looked like the left bank (as standing on the boat ramp) has some good structure, but are there better areas to try?

Anyone else going tomorrow that wants to meet up?

Bah i was all geared up to sneak out during lunch onto the Potomac but a little storm moved through. Foiled!

I pulled a short fat Betty off a bed maybe 3 pounds my best so far at BH this year, but was skunked in my last trip out.

Made it out to BH today for a couple of hours from 3:30-5:30. Ran into Sean (Basser69). Hooked a bass in my first several casts. He wrapped himself around a pole but I was able to get him out and Sean snapped a quick pic. He was about 14 inches or so. That was the only fish of the day. Also ran into Kevin (KingFisher) an his son at the end.

Plenty of surface activity today. Kevin's son caught several small crappie while I was there. There were plenty of sunfish up on the banks. I probably won't get out this weekend but most likely next weekend. Thinking of going at sunrise and trying my luck with some topwater, maybe a popper or frog.

For everyone not catching anything at Black Hills I will add this advice; since we have been in a warming trend the past couple of days start out with your favorite crankbait, spinnerbait or swim bait. If that does not produce or you do not see any fish following the bait it is time to switch up. I will not go into great detail about my techniques on this page but I suggest pitchin whatever bait you feel confident in at the laydowns. I fish BH a lot along with several other places in the state and right now I am dialed in to the fish. My last two trips to BH produced about 40 bass so I kind of know what I am doing. If you want so more specific info sent me a PM all I ask is if I give you info about how to catch them you not post it for the world to see in a public forum. I spend a lot of time on the water and would like to help others that are struggling I just do not want 20 boats fishing a hole I apent time finding because someone posted it on the WWW.

Hi,

Boat is back, finally have some time Sunday to head out for a 1/2 day. I'll be at BH in the morning. Taking my daughter so let's see how that goes, time wise.

Thanks for those Frederick Info/Reports. I'm going to try them! Not far from my house.

Fat Boy - send me email, we need to get out in May for a trip!

I made it out to the Monacocy tonight at Pinecliff and the bite was pretty dead. Managed 1 little carp and 1 little blue gill. It was the 1st time I had my Kayak out so I spent more time just playing around in that than fishing though. I hoping the bite picks up soon, last year it was pretty active at Pinecliff for Smallies.

Weather permitting I will be heading up to the Potomac just down river of the 340 bridge on Tues so I'll let you guys know how that goes. I'm dying to get into some smallies.

Sounds good Peter, will do...glad to see you out fishing and posting again.

My buddy Howard and I plopped the Crawdad into Triadelphia Reservoir yesterday. I was curious about the pike, but our primary goal was to just fish and have a good time, no pressure, and to take what the lake gave us. We started out bass fishing and struggled a little while until we finally put together a pattern.

I caught 11 bass, all but two were keeper sized fish with the biggest largemouth going 18". Howard caught a few less than me but managed a nice smallie that made me jealous ;) Senkos were the ticket for the bass, although I had a couple light hits on a Rat-L-Trap and caught one bass on a plastic worm. Of the 11 bass, three were smallies. I'm sure that I could have caught more bass but we spent a lot of time with the panfish, because, well, it was pretty fun catching fish after fish so easily. Here's a pic of one of the bass:

Here's Howard's smallie:

IMG_20120505_110526.jpg

In between bass catches, we also found the crappie which were spawning and extremely easy to catch. I lost count after catching 48 crappie, with a dozen green sunfish, eight bluegills and a yellow perch mixed in, all hammering a 2" Kalin's grub. I managed to lose a massive crappie right before lipping it that would have been well over 15" long, with a mouth that looked like it could inhale a tennis ball. I giggled like a school kid as I was fighting it on the ultralight, which may have sent enough vibrations down the Nanofil line to work the hook loose.

I also was curious about catching a Pike, so...after catching about half the crappie, we moved on and I changed my focus to pike. I didn't bring any musky rods and used my bass flipping rod as my pike set up. I lobbed glider for about 45 minutes and had a follow, but not from a pike, but rather a 6" yellow perch!!!!!!! I couldn't believe that it was interested in such a big lure, pretty funny. After that, I tossed a Mepps Musky Killer spinner, and then an 8" Jake for a while. No northern follows at all after an hour and a half. I also saw a sign that they had stocked tiger muskies in the lake, but they're probably like the Black Hill relatives being old and perhaps dying off by now. But I had hoped to raise one anyway, but no luck.

With an hour or so to fish, I had the Mepps on and had a hit! I worked that spot over again and again with the spinner, went to a Hell Hound, then tried a Rapala Magnum X-Rap...nada. I wondered if it was even a pike at all, so I changed back to the Senko and sure enough, had a hit at that very spot, and it turned out to be my biggest largemouth at 18" long, which was my 10th bass of the day. Dang. But, not a bad consolation prize.

After that, I decided to keep fishing the Senko and wouldn't you know it, on the way back to the ramp in a place that I wouldn't have thought, I had a pike follow it to the boat. I tried to go into an F8 but it spooked and shot off in a different direction from whence it came. I went back to the bucktail but couldn't tempt it to hit again, never saw it again. I estimated it to be in the mid 30's and pretty fat. Time was almost up and the wind had picked up, so we headed back before the batteries would be drained.

Yesterday was about catching fish and having fun. But that follow gave me confidence that next time, I may leave the other species stuff at home, and fish bigger baits for pike. And who knows, I may get a HUGE tiger if any are still alive.

Made it out for a couple of hours (12:30-2:30) at Black Hills. Started for the first hour by the tubes for nothing and went over by the stick ups for the last hour. Managed three fish, one at about 16-17" and two other small ones. All on a Rage Craw.
