I got out on Black Hill last night, and we caught one fish between the two of us. What a great day/night to get out though.

Peter, here's the link to Washington county's boat ramps. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/boating/washington.asp

I've used Dargens Bend, Snyders Landing, Taylors Landing, Big Slackwater (above dam4), Williamsport and McCoys Ferry. Dargens doesn't have much room (limited space due) unless you have a jet but there is a little bit you can fish. Snyders is the one I use the most, good mix of fish can be caught, there are a few shallow spots that you have to watch out for but can be easily spotted reading the river. Taylors boat ramps are tricky. There's 2 ramps there, the lower ramp is shallow and can be a royal pain to launch from there and the upper one has a good bit of current (so a two man launch would be best). Big Slackwater gets the big cruiser boats that have little regard for smaller vessels (so I usually avoid that place during the summer) but you can definitely give your outboard a good run there. Williamsport and McCoys are boat pretty shallow and I don't do much more than put along with the outboard there to save the trolling motor. Not sure how the fishing is at 4 locks but its deeper and I've seen bigger boats in there as well so my take would be about the same conditions as the Big Slackwater.

I did get out for a little while last evening. Hit Black Hills again (from outside the park). No takers last night for me. Hoping to be able to get out for a little while this evening, not positive on whether that'll happen or not yet.

Nice summary of the Washington County ramps Sean. I was going to post the same info but I couldn't have said it any better.

Taylors this time of year is really tricky and you need a jet. When the river is up you will be OK.

You can put in at Seneca Creek along the Potomac and have about 3 miles to run when the river is up, but learn where the shallow rocks are first before you go too far up river. My buddy tore up his lower unit that way on his Tracker years ago. Basically, the water past the first island gets tricky in the summer...

Also, you may want to consider Raystown in PA. No HP limit and the fishing can be good.

The Lower Potomac has a lot of room to run and good fishing...worth the permit fees for sure.

The upper tidal Patuxent and the Eastern Shore rivers are good too.

Peter, how did you make out at the Urbana fishing management area?

I got out briefly last night myself (maybe an hour and a half). No takers for me last night either.

Well, still waiting on DNR for boat stuff.

I dropped over to Urbana Lake to scope it out. All in all the pond looks healthy. Not too much in weeds. I did not fish at all. Just a scouting trip. Seems it might be hard to get to some places as the banks are heavy covered.

Here are some shots.

Didn't see any rises nor fish scared away from shore.

I think a fishing Kayak would be perfect if you have one of those wheely things to hand carry it.

Not sure when I'm getting out next. This week is looking crazy for me too. Will try to get out at some point here! Getting that little twitch for lack of fishing! :D

Great fish David301!!!

Leaving on Friday for a week of fishing in New York, can't wait to get up there. Looking at fishing reports and the forums for the lake makes the anticipation worse.

Beautiful fish David! What a monster!

Upper Potomac Report 7/17/11:

My fishing buddy Howard and I fished the Upper Potomac on Sunday. It was a nice drive out to the river. Here's a scenery shot from on top of a mountain:

up07171109.jpg

As you can see, this place looked really promising. The water was low and fairly clear. Plus, the view up and down the river was beautiful, and we had it pretty much to ourselves except for a group of 8 friendly tubers and a few canoes, and only 2 of those people were fishing.

Here are a couple fish caught:

This river smallie nailed a 4" plastic worm.

One that Howard landed.

image007.png

Another bronzeback, not big, but the size that I don't mind catching all day long.

image008.png

I finished with 58 smallies, 2 red breast sunnies, 2 rock bass, and a green sunfish, with about a dozen of the bass being between 12” and 14”. This was a new spot and I think that I'd go back. It has a lot of potential. It’s not the Susky and the fish could be a bit bigger, but it was a ton of fun. My buddy guessed that he finished with 40 something bass and a rock bass on the day. His numbers between 12” and 14” were comparable to mine. Buzzbaits seemed to not get the dinks and caught mostly good sized ones for him. I caught mine while jigging soft plastics. Nothin' like a wet wade when fishing on a hot day.

Ken and basser89....I just got lucky and found a honey hole that is right across the street from where I live :D

Keep your head up 301! It happens to all of us. BrianinMD watched me loose a real good one several months back on a spinnerbait (something that I don't loose bass on very often) that wasn't more than 5-6' away from me. Later on that evening I redeemed myself with a 6 pounder.

I saw what???

Its all part of the fishing, part of what makes it fun when you do get the big ones in. I am having a rough year for big fish, best LM is 4lbs 4oz, best smallie is 3lb 1oz. Hope to get out of that funk soon.

Given the fact that you took the pic of the big one I did catch, I'd think you'd remember. :P Haven't you left for NY yet? LOL!

You'll get out of your funk soon! Maybe those bass up in NY will cooperate a little more. Unless the water is plagued with skinny, tiny pike that is. :D
