301-fisherman Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Hey there, new user here. i am a young fisherman just 22. I am sort of new to this fishing thing. I have fished here and there growing up but recently go out every chance I get. Have been reading this forum for the past few days and saw alot of talk about black hills so I thought I would give it a shot. Normally I fish the monoc. or at dickerson. No luck at dickerson lately. Today I did venture out to black hills. started off slow almost hooked a snake going across the water ( terrified of snakes!). Since I am new to Black Hills I had no idea of where to go. I found myself on a dock over the water. I ended up catching a pretty decent size bass. My fellow fisherman, I like Black HIlls but would like some advice on spots to go where success has been had. I am fishing from the bank. Thanks for any help! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 6, 2011 Super User Posted May 6, 2011 Welcome 301-fisherman!!!!!! Black Hills can be a tough place to fish from shore, but there are some really good fish there. I will put together some thoughts in an PM to you a little later. Quote

I ended up heading back out after my post, no luck. Tried fishing then a family thought it would be nice to take photos around me!. Anyway, ended up talking to a guy on a boat. He said he pulled out like a 8-9lb'r last week? He was trying to point me to a few spots but was hard to on the boat lol. Thanks for anyone willing to help I will def. be heading out there alot more this week and weekend! Quote
301-fisherman Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 Well its saturday, off work at 1 looks like I'm heading out to Black Hills! Wish me luck! Quote
JigMe Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Went out yesterday, and picked up a few dinkers at Loch Raven. Largest I caught was 2.1 LB and I will upload the pics in my gallery later. Where are my 5lbers... Quote
BaltimoreLaura Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I'm in Baltimore City and looking for some new fishing spots. We usually go up to Loch Raven and either fish the shore or occasionally rent a boat, but haven't had much success there lately. I've done some searching on the forum (great thread, by the way!), and was looking for some more advice. I'll be down in Howard County Sunday morning in Fulton, and was hoping to try out something down there. We'll be close to Rocky Gorge Reservoir - has anyone fished the shore there lately with any success? How about Tridelphia? I've read a bunch of posts here about Black Hills - would it be worth the extra drive to head out that way? Thanks in advance! Quote
basser89 Posted May 11, 2011 Author Posted May 11, 2011 Welcome to THE boards 301-fisherman and BaltimoreLaura! 301, how did you make out at Black Hills the other day? wv, did you get a chance to hit the C&O the other day or did you run out of daylight? BaltimoreLaura, if you saw my post, it looks like the spawn is underway. I haven't been to Black Hills since my last post about it. So I'm not completely sure how far along they are. I can get you that far, maybe others can add more about black hills or the other spots you mentioned. The last time I was able to make it out, I hit the Potomac (at Dam 4 from shore), think it was actually the same day wv mentioned getting out. The levels weren't quite where I wanted them, a little too low for the one area and a little too high for the other one (LOL). But I did manage 1 scrapper largemouth and 4 smallies. Biggest went about 14-15 inches (a smallie) and they were all caught on tubes. Not sure when I'm getting out again. Hmmmmmmmmmmm????? Quote
301-fisherman Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Thanks basser, Black Hills has been rough lately, all of a sudden there renting boats and stuff so it has been packed!!! Standing elbow to elbow trying to cast from shore. Thought I could make it out today or tomorrow however a girl called outta work so I have 0 days off this week and with rain coming this weekend I dont know when I will be back out. Hopefully it will be soon! Quote

Thought I could make it out today or tomorrow however a girl called outta work so I have 0 days off this week and with rain coming this weekend I dont know when I will be back out. Hopefully it will be soon! I kinda figured it would start slowing down some when I saw what I did the last time it was there. Might be a different story on the boat (if I had mine down here ) since you could look for bass in other stages that way. Just remember, there's more areas to fish than just down at the boat rental area. Google map the lake, I think you can find some decent shoreline fishing where you're not elbow to elbow with other guys. Just pay attention walking, with the warm weather, the snakes would more than likely be out. I saw that rain is coming. Hopefully, I can get out some where before that happens. Only time will tell though! Good luck if you (and everyone else) do get out! Quote
TerryR Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I have a question for you Maryland guys. I hear the Potomac is really good to catch smallmouth. Would any of these areas be near Cumberland or the town Route 522 goes through(sorry I don't remember the name of the town)? Also, what kind of border agreement with West Virginia is in place, if any? Can I fish either shore with either liscense or boat, or do I need both liscenses? Quote
basser89 Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 Welcome to THE boards Terry! I wish I could help you with your question but I haven't ventured that far west to be able to offer you any insight in that area. Hopefully someone can help out with how the fishing is around there. As far as the license goes, yes you can fish either shore with a MD or WV license. Quote

Fished for about a half hour. Looks like they had just mowed the grass and I did catch a lot of it,. I fished on the stone wall right at the corner of the Visistor Center. Didn't try anywhere else. We have gotten out twice since then. First trip was on Saturday(May 7)to Sharpsburg where my son caught three LM most on the small side. We then hit Brownsville. Water was a little cloudy. We started using soft plastics on the end with the big sycamore tree. Looked like a large fish was along the edge at least by the way the water boiled up a couple times. I moved down by the tree that hangs out over the bank near the middle. Got a pretty good thump and set the hook. I could tell it was something big by the weight but it didn't move like a large bass. Thought it got off but it was coming straight at me instead. Finally got in close and it was a big catfish. It was hooked behind the gills in the side. Was about to pull it up on shore and it broke off. I'm guessing at least 6/7 lbs. I don't know if it hit the bait and knew it was fake and turned and I hooked it or what. Our second trip was last night at Sharpsburg and the Potomac blow the Rumsey Bridge at Shepherdstown on MD side. Water was a little cloudy and moving a little too fast for fishing. We moved on to Sharpsburg. My son caught for bass from 7 inches to about 10 inches a n a Creme worm. I finally got on the board for 2011 with a 12 inch bass on the same lure. Saw plenty of bass moving but not much action. Hooked a couple nice ones guarding beds but didn't bring them in to shore. Looks like spawn has happened or is happening there. Lots of crap on the water there. There were three guys catching trout at the deeper end. One of them told me they tore up some smallies drifting down from Dam 4 to Taylor's Landing. Said they were using crankbaits. Also said they had not spawned...bellies were big and tails not messed up. Kinda surprised me to hear that comment. Looks like river should be good now. Quote
basser89 Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 Cool deal on your outings wv! I haven't tried the Sharpsburg pond yet and only attempted Brownsville that one time so far and didn't get a line wet there. I've fished that section up by the visitor's center at Williamsport a few times. Managed only a couple small bass on cranks. I got out this morning for a couple hours. I hit the C&O canal at Dickerson. Spawn is definitely over there. The grass is really coming in there now which switched up how I was expecting to fish. With the rain we got last evening, the water was in a lot better shape than I expected it to be (except for the areas carp had tore up). Ended up missing a couple of a Rage Toad before I switched up to the Rage Shad Caught 2 on it. The biggest one was about 2 pounds. Looked to be a spawned out female that crushed the toad when I swam it by the end of a laydown on the opposite side. The other one came off the tow path side as I paralleled the shore line. Anyone else make it out this weekend? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 15, 2011 Super User Posted May 15, 2011 Back from my tourney at Smith Mountain Lake, its a beautiful lake but the bite was tough. Ended up getting 2nd place for the co-angler side. Bright spot was a personal best 3lb 2oz smallie. Fought like a tank on 6lb test. With the storms being called for each night not sure when I will get out again. Next tourney is not until the first weekend in June. Quote
301-fisherman Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Anyone heading out to Black Hills on wednesday the 18th for night fishing since the parks opened until 12 midnight? I get off early and plan on being out there all afternoon and night! Quote
basser89 Posted May 17, 2011 Author Posted May 17, 2011 Anyone heading out to Black Hills on wednesday the 18th for night fishing since the parks opened until 12 midnight? I get off early and plan on being out there all afternoon and night! Shoot! I didn't realize they started the "night fishing" already! Can't make it them. My daughter has a concert that I have to go to that evening and that won't be over til 9. By the time I grabbed my gear and headed back down, it'd be after 10 til I got there. Too late for me unfortunately. Quote
301-fisherman Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Welp...off work it may rain it may not who knows but look out black hills here I come!!!! hopefully out until late! Quote
basser89 Posted May 19, 2011 Author Posted May 19, 2011 Welp...off work it may rain it may not who knows but look out black hills here I come!!!! hopefully out until late! How was it last evening? Here's hoping that all our friends living next to the Potomac (and other bodies of water) are safe! I saw this morning the river gauge that I track (Hancock) peaked at over 25.3' but with more rain coming today and tomorrow, it could spike again! I can't even imagine if it spikes again. Can still remember the flows from last year and that was crazy! Where the levels are right now, the road to Dam 4 is still covered. Quote
Basser714 Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Well i had all my black lures lined up and ready to go at dusk, did a quick doppler radar check, and aborted on my Black Hill night fishing plan. I am curious to hear how anyone did last night. I almost went regardless of the rain but then heard the thunder and saw the lightning and aborted mission. Last time I was there, I didnt notice much activity along the shore. Not many to almost no bait fish, only got one 3 pounder. Anyone else notice what I am thinking may be a slow spring at BH? I walked all around looking for signs of life. i didnt see much. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 19, 2011 Super User Posted May 19, 2011 I am sure the weather this spring has messed up things, most of the reports I hear from the shore are slow fishing. But reports from boats are doing pretty well in shallow wood cover which is the norm. Seems to be you have to cover water fishing the shallow laydowns, stumps, or standing timber. Quote
301-fisherman Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Yeah it is very slow from the shore. I was trying to night fish black hills as well but everyone left the park around 8. I too had set up my rods with dark lures but when everyone left I felt awkward not to mention that stupid snake almost attacked me this time. I need to figure out a plan there. On those boats they rent to you will they allow you to bring you fishing gear? Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 20, 2011 Super User Posted May 20, 2011 Yes, you can bring your fishing gear. If you have one you can bring a trolling motor and battery to help get around. Once summer kicks in the the night fishing will go longer. Hopefully I won't miss it again. One of my club members was out yesterday during the day, got 9 with his largest at 20.25 inches. Most fish were on jigs, with a couple on sliderheads in 10-15ft of water. Said another boat was pounding the shoreline with spinnerbaits and getting a few too. Quote
301-fisherman Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 As always, I appreciate the knowledge...Think I will give it a go...setting up rods now and I'm off! Report back later on! Quote
301-fisherman Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Great fishing last night at Black Hills. For me personally, I didn't catch a thing...I think I need to improve my tackle box, however I watched this kid on a boat pull in 3-4lb bass one after another down by the boat ramp to the right. One guy fishing from the shore caught one as well. Also, a group of spanish guys caught a 5lbr right under one of the docks and immediately ran to their car with it. The kid said he was using a popper. I tried anything from spinnerbait to lizard to frog to like a rapla minnow. I am pretty sure the spinnerbaits I use may be to large. Off to buy some new tackle before work today, any suggestions and from where?? Quote
