Super User Munkin Posted January 22, 2011 Super User Posted January 22, 2011 Hey all-I'm in Northern VA, so I typically post on the Southeast forum, but I was hoping someone might have a little info on that "hotspot" on the upper Potomac we know so well. I'm not new to the place, but haven't been there in 2 yrs, so I was wondering... 1) anyone been lately? How are conditions? 2) last time I was there, bank fishing was hard because the ground was so soft you "sunk" due to recent rains. I no longer have my waders, so I'm shorebound. Is it manageable right now? Thanks in advance. Wdo you plan on fishing? The Dickerson power plant area always has muddy banks unless you follow the trail all the way up to the off limits area. basser89 Posted January 22, 2011 Author Posted January 22, 2011 I don't know, it's been getting harder and harder to get in that place! The real sad part is, he's so quirky that he won't let anyone fish that pond outside of like a 2-3 month window which is WELL after the spawn is over. So the pics that MskSlyr has posted before aren't anywhere near their full potential during the prespawn. I'll let you know if he can extend the invite outside the few the land owner allows now. You have NO idea how much I want to get in there with you guys. Just the thought of throwing the big stuff in there makes me giddy. ;D So there is a secret spot I do not know about huh? Wayne, you can go with me to that spot we hit last time. In March right after ice out as I cannot find a partner? Everyone seems to b**ch out because of the cold. My current 5 fish record is 22lbs 3oz for that place with March being the best time for big fish. Allen Hey Allen, SPEED and I have talked before about hitting there too (so I believe I know where you're referring to). If you need a partner to fish there, let me know too! I'd definitely be up for it! I've hooked some good ones in there but the best one I've landed is only 4 1/2lbs. Quote

Allen Brian and I hit Dickerson this morning. 12 degrees in the parking lot at 7:15 (I was a little late getting there, sorry again Brian!!!). They were pumping this morning and baitfish were breaking the surface but only 2 tiny bass were caught by Brian (one smallie and one largemouth). Levels were less than ideal by about a foot and a half. Think this had a lot to do with our lack of success. Was good getting out though. Thanks again Brian to meeting up with me, had a blast even with the lack of productivity! Oh yeah, almost forgot Allen. That "secret spot" SPEED is referring to is a private pond that my good friend MskSlyr gets he and I into once or twice a year. This pond has produced some real good bass that I believe MskSlyr has posted on here before. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted January 23, 2011 Super User Posted January 23, 2011 Allen, let me know man. I'll hit that up with you anytime you want. I'm still looking for some hair jig smallies, you just tell me when. Quote
JigMe Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Thanks for the info bassEr, I'm gonna give a try tomorrow. Just spooled my reels, and ready to go. Hehe Quote
JigMe Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Thanks for the tip basser. I got there around 11:30am, and took me a while to find the place. :-[ I have landed 4 fishes today, 3 large mouth and one small mouth. Two large mouth on zoom trick worm, and another one on a 1/4 jig. Got a small mouth on a 4 inch senko wacky style. But nothing big, my largest one is about 9 inches. There are some folks fishing right by the discharge point, so I took a hike for about 50 meters to the right until I reached a small opening looks fishable. Someone at the discharge point said, he landed a 3lber few minutes before I arrived. Quote

BTW you guys missed some great deals at the Ag show in Boonsboro. I got 3 packs of Yamamoto flappin hogs for $2 Allen Quote

Super User BrianinMD Posted January 24, 2011 Super User Posted January 24, 2011 Fair weather fisherman, interesting concept. Saturday morning it was 12 degrees when Basser89 and myself went to Dickerson. I will go fishing whenever I can, only exception is lightening. But will admit 12 degrees had me debating a little about whether to go or not. Quote

Like Brian said, the only thing that really keeps me away is lightning. Did that once, not a big fan! Rain, snow, dog days hot...... I get out when I can! I just love to fish! Heck, I even did an early bird tourney with SPEED last year. Conditions that day were far from fair weather fisherman conditions! LOL! Quote
Super User Munkin Posted January 24, 2011 Super User Posted January 24, 2011 The early bird is on again this year late in Feb but there is no way I am fishing it. Four Locks is the worst place to fish! The only fish caught the guys run all the way upriver past Hancock. Allen Quote
basser89 Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Wow! That's a run! The early bird SPEED and I fished was on THE worst lake in PA! LOL! I haven't fished the 4 locks area before. When I'm on the river, I usually hit between Williamsport to Dargen Bend. Add in shore fishing down at Dickerson and that's about the limit to my MD river experience. :-/ Quote
bigdog321 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Hey Basser89 I see you and Brian went to Dickerson the other day. How was the walk down to the water ,was it icy or muddy? I'm asking because I'm dying to go there for the first time and I have a back problem so I can't do anything too treacherous. Also is it true that the only way to get to water is to walk down the canal path?.Isn't their a path to the left of the parking lot that will get you to water? Quote
basser89 Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Hey bigdog, The walk is about 10-15 minutes to the actual discharge area. You go up the canal path til you see a red arrow on a tree (someone must have just put it on there cause I don't remember seeing it before). Right off the path, when its warmer, it can get a little sloppy for about 10-20 feet or so and then its ok again. Once you weave back through the woods, you come right out to the lower end of the discharge. It's not too bad. I've had minor back problems for a good while now and if you take your time, I don't think you'd have any problems. There is a path straight across from the parking lot but from the limited experience in that area, it's way too shallow. There's another spot I tried a couple weeks back (that is down to the left of the parking lot) that used to be pretty good but levels aren't right for it right now and you have to go through a spot that's nothing but blown over trees and trees that got washed in there from high waters. The discharge area can get a little muddy or even icy but right now, with no rain or snow, its good. I think for PEPCO to be a productive spot, the water levels need to come up about a foot to a foot and a half. So if you track any of the river gauges, what ever it is right now, it's too low in my opinion. Hope this helps! If ya need any more information, let me or any of the other guys on here that fish there know! Quote
bigdog321 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Thanks alot Basser. I really appreciate the info. The temp is supposed to get up around 50 today , so I think I'm going to give edwards ferry a try today and maybe I'll wait till the water level rises a little before I go out to dickerson. Quote

Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted January 26, 2011 Super User Posted January 26, 2011 LOL, one or two? I believe you forgot a couple zeroes after those numbers. PM sent. ;D Quote
Hellbenderman Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 OK. If someone doesn't say something we may drop to page 2, and I'll move to New Jersey before I allow Maryland to fall to page 2. If you plan to fish the tidal Potomac, which includes the Potomac below Chain Bridge, or any other "salt water", there are new federal regulations that require you to register in each state or jurisdiction and / or the National Saltwater Registry. Don't try and play dumb. Expect to be inspected for proper paper work. Find what you need to do for VA, MD, DC. http://www.mrc.virginia.gov/FIP http://dnr.maryland.gov/swregistry.asp. To fish in DCeveryone needs a DC license and must register with NOAA, https://www.countmyfish.noaa.gov/register/ paying the $15 fee (?). Good luck sorting this one out! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 4, 2011 Super User Posted February 4, 2011 Hellbenderman, If someone fiqures out how to sign up for DC i would love to know. The link given to us at our club meeting to use doesn't include it as an option. Quote
basser89 Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 Hey Brian, Levels looked promising for you yesterday but today it's rising pretty good! Over a 3' rise today alone and no signs of slowing up yet. Watch yourself if you make it out this weekend! Obviously that goes for everyone! Quote
Hellbenderman Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 They were talking about that problem at the meeting...just make sure you have signed up for the national saltwater registry and have a DC license, because that's all you can get for now. I guess DC hasn't done anything yet, but you'll find out when they give you a ticket...hehehe. Quote
