Bwickfisher Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Last time I was at the river was when it was raining a lot. The current was too fast to work a lure properly. I've never caught anything when the water is muddy, other than cats, they love it. It's probably much better now. The backwaters are great. My buddy was fishing "the gut", as the locals call it, and said the fish were hitting everything he threw. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted October 8, 2010 Super User Posted October 8, 2010 When the river is high and muddy the bass like to stick very close to the bank or in eddies. They do not like to swim against all that current and waist energy. For me this is the easiest time to catch them as they aren't very hard to find. Black jigs and chart crankbaits work best but other lures will work. Allen Quote
TexasNovice Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Wow, thanks for the insight guys. I think I'm going to end up at the river over the weekend. I haven't got so much as a bite at BH since the sun came out yesterday. Hopefully I'll find something this weekend! Quote
wv Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Welcome Texasnovice. You have joined a really good, helpful and informing group of fisdhermen here. My son and I got out to our usual spot on the Potomac across from Shepherdstown WV boat ramp. River looked good. Saw a lot of people in boats and on shore fishing but nobody doing any catching. Saw some fish jumping later in evening. Kinda strange thing happened not long after we got there. Heard some thunder, saw a few dark clouds and some raindrops along with a quick temperature drop but it warmed right back up after rain stopped. I di manage to hook a SMB in the belly on a Tiny Torpedo :-[ Not sure how that happened on a top-water lure. My son hooked another but lost it...would have been his first SMB if that was what the fish was. I'm guessing fishing in the river is just about done for the year. We got out to Blair's Valley last Sunday. It was windy and cool. Lost about $15 worth of equipment and no fish so we left. We did stop at Big Pool on way home. Saw some boat trailers but no fishermen. Looked like a good spot for our small jon boat...not sure how you could fish there from shore. Not much else to report. Quote
TexasNovice Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I went out and spent about 2 and a half days on the water and didn't manage anything significant. The river was pretty slow, the occasional bite. I got a few little dinks at Black Hill. I did end up getting into some poison oak or something and that really slowed me down. Then I had to do some traveling, got some catfishing done in Texas. I got back in MD last night ready to find the fish, just got to stay away from the poison oak! Super User Munkin Posted October 24, 2010 Super User Posted October 24, 2010 River is 57 degrees, clear and most of the grass has died off. Allen Quote
basser89 Posted October 24, 2010 Author Posted October 24, 2010 Thanks for the river report Allen! While I didn't wet a line, my daughter and I went for a bike ride on the C&O toe path. River looked really low and like you mentioned, I didn't see any grass. Saw several boats and wished I was close enough to get a report from them but no luck there. Quote
basser89 Posted November 1, 2010 Author Posted November 1, 2010 Brian and I got out over the week. We decided on hitting Big Pool. Some goofball (me) forgot my fish finder so wasn't able to get a water temp reading and had to go off memory on finding the drop offs n' such. We about about 15-16 or so on a bunch of different baits. Cranks, jerkbaits, lipless cranks, jigs and spinnerbaits (I know I'm missing a bait or 2 Brian, please chime in!). We weren't able to find any of the big girls in there this time but sure had fun! Thanks for getting out with me Brian! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 1, 2010 Super User Posted November 1, 2010 You pretty much have it covered except for one I got on a sliderhead with a 3in senko. Was a fun day on the water, nothing big but enough bites to keep it interesting. Just wish I had a firetiger crank, they were liking it. Was a little surprised to see how cloudy the water was. Don't remember Big Pool being like that. I also had a chance to fish with TexasNovice after work once last week. Unfortunately I didn't pick a good spot, we didn't catch anything... Quote
wv Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Now that the weather is cooling down and fishing opportunities are dwindling, does anyone have any cold weather fishing ideas. I know there are some warm water areas. I tried to find the one in Williamsport but couldn't locate it. :-[ Walked around power plant and didn't see any way to get access. Also tried walking bank to from boat ramps and ran into signs saying keep back from dam. I also talked to a man where I work that said he fishes all year in Susquehanna as long as he gets a boat in the water. Don't have a Pennsy license so that's not an option. I know last Thanksgiving my son and I tried Taylor's Landing but couldn't see any place to fish from shore. A man there suggested going up river some towards Dam #4 for shore-fishing but we headed home. Any one with any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated...if nothing else we can re-stock our tackle box over the winter. ;D Quote
basser89 Posted November 11, 2010 Author Posted November 11, 2010 Hey wv, Here's how to get to the power plant at Williamsport. Head down like you're going to the boat ramp and make that left after the bridge that takes you back to the power plant entrance. All you need to do is park right outside the gate there on the right. Just to the back side of the fence, you'll see a little path that leads right back behind the power plant. Take it and it'll lead you right down to where the discharge dumps into the Potomac. I've never had any issues there (except for getting too crowded to fish). The fish commission will even stop in to check licenses and ask how fishing is so it's definitely ok to be there and fish. I didn't have much luck there last winter. A handful of rock bass is all I really remember. The smallies I have caught in there were never anything to brag about but at times (when the warm water is flowing), the numbers are there to make it at least fun. I have taken the boat out in November and December before on the Potomac. I usually put in at Snyders when I do (just the part of the Potomac I'm most familiar with) for a mixed bag of fishing. Mostly pick up a couple smallies and some walleye in there. The Dickerson power plant (PEPCO) is the other spot I'll hit in the winter. It's a little hike (both the drive down there and the walk up to where the discharge is) but it can be well worth the effort if you get there at the right time. Smallies, largemouth, crappie, bluegill, rock bass, walleye and even an occasional catfish are all that I've caught in there. That place can get pretty crowded too. Seems the earlier I get there and the nastier the weather is, the less people I run into which makes it nice since there have been times that I felt like it was the opening day of trout season and I barely had any place to fish the way I like. Hope that helps you out some! If you have any questions, let me know and I'll help you out the best I can! Quote
evanj Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 point of rocks has been hitting well for me. since the Dicks sporting goods near me doesn't have smoke w/purple flake or black 4 inch senko's, i'm ripping a little more than an inch off the 5 inchers to cast against the wind and get it to the deep areas. the fish are wherever you can't see the bottom very well. not much shallow stuff. i've fished 3 days this week with over 20 caught, none over 14 though which is kind of a bummer, but it's been good action. pretty consistent. i fished for a little over 3 hours sunday and landed around 20, with my last 8 or so within 30-45 minutes wacky rigging senkos. i missed probably about that number when they ripped it off the hook. it was weird how i kept getting hits. that was when the sun was going down. i fished the break of dawn tuesday and wednesday and caught good numbers before 930 and spotty deep hole action until 2 oclock. if i missed a couple fish in a hole, it would die. all fishing from the side and wading. a couple have broken my line, 10lb test spider wire, but i haven't kept anything huge on. i'm not sure how much longer the action is going to last though, which is saddening me Quote

I did see a "ditch" behind the plant which I'm guessing is the "discharge" . I couldn't see a way down to the river...that must be where the path comes in handy. As for Snyder's Landing I have been there several times but never fished there. I have met people that do quite well in that area especially for walleyes(never caught one)so I 'm guessing they are not story-telling. The Dickerson thing looks like a little longer trip for us...can I use my MD Non-Res license there or not? Thanks again for all your information and help. I'm hoping to get out at least 5/6 more times before end of year...now that I got some places to go. Quote
wv Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 LMB Caught at Brownsville Pond this pastsummer. Wow. I was just messing around on the computer and I thought I had lost this picture. Then I messed around some more and found a "wizard" to "re-size" photos and lo-and-behold I posted this picture. I cut out some of the fish and yours truly but I got it on here just the same. I would have to look back on my posts to find the date. I think you can see the Strike King crankbait it was caught on as well. Maybe I can find some more pics and psot them. Original post was on July 5th. OK. I think I got a better picture here now. Pardon me for taking up so much space trying to post a dumb picture. Quote
Hellbenderman Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Went out to BH today. I don't think it got near the projected 65. Surface temp 53-55. Three dinks on senkos, three 3lbs on deep crank. Went to the left past park dock. I don't think the lake has turned over. This was probably my last trip to BH this year. Say it isn't so! Quote
TexasNovice Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 WOW it sure is cold outside! I've been going back and forth from South Carolina for the past month and a half now. The leaves are just beginning to fall off of the trees there. The fishing has been OK there as well. I'm going to be in the GTN area for the next month solid. Where to should I focus my fishing efforts now that its cold? Blu Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 Hello Maryland... I have recently been transfer to Patuxent River from Chesapeake Virginia. I may be pestering you all about where to fish around here and where the boat ramps are. I have a 2005 Gambler 2100DC with a Yamaha 250. Looking forward to getting it on the water around here; keeping it winterized until March it looks like at the earliest. Hope to see you all out on the water. Dan Quote
basser89 Posted December 8, 2010 Author Posted December 8, 2010 Welcome to THE boards Dan! Please ask away! That's one of the reasons I created this thread! I've got to fish with a few of the guys that post on here! Great bunch of anglers! Thinking you'll be fishing waters a little farther east than I usually hit. Skim back through the thread, I'm sure there's a few guys that are close to ya that could point you in the right direction! Hey Texas, the PEPCO power plant in Dickerson has been talked about a good bit in this thread if I remember right. Its probably the main spot I hit during the colder months. Hellbender, glad to see you had a good last trip to B.H.! Sad to see it basically over too! Popped over at lunch today and saw a thin film of ice on the backwash area already. wv, that's a healthy looking bass! Good to see they're still doing well in there! Quote
Hellbenderman Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 I just wanted to say that during this time of joyous celebration for so many of us, it really doesn't matter whether you say Merry Christmas or Happy Chahanuka or Festivus for the Rest of Us, or Happy Holidays. No matter what your religious beliefs, it is still too cold to fish. Quote

No matter what your religious beliefs, it is still too cold to fish. Hmmm, not sure what you're talkin about Chris... Brian and I were out the other weekend and while the action was REALLY slow, we still had "soft" water to fish! No drilling holes! ;D As long as I have warm waters to fish over the next couple of months, I'm good to go! And hey, look at the bright side, the days are starting to get longer again! Quote
JigMe Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Anyone going to the fishing expo at Timonium next week? Quote
Hellbenderman Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Went fishing in my drive way this morning, but didn't catch anything. I tried a senko and a jig. Quote
basser89 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 LOL Hellbender! You crack me up! Lee.MD, won't be attending this year. I've been really disappointed the last few years with the show so I've given up on it. I did get out saturday to freeze my giblets off! I hit a spot down below PEPCO that I hadn't been to in about 2 years. No takers there. The quest continues for the first bass of 2011! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 10, 2011 Super User Posted January 10, 2011 Hellbender, I don't believe you.....you used a jig....  Haven't made it out this year yet, the way it looks will be a couple of weeks before I have a chance. Lee.MD, not going to the expo this year. Quote
basser89 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 Hellbender, I don't believe you.....you used a jig.... Can't say that about me Brian! LOL! Quote
