Caught the pic on a Siebert 1/4oz Chatterbait w/ Menace Grub trailer, the bass on a 1/4oz willow-bladed chartreuse/white spinnerbait w/ grub trailer. The bad part of the trip was I somehow managed to backlash all there rods I had with me. Two of the reels even have SV spools I can blame a numb thumb on one of them, but man I am moving to a cheaper line for a while. Congrats on the fish, sucks with the backlashes, and excellent report. Everyone I know around the DC area struggled hard this weekend with many skunks, making what you got done even more impressive. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 13, 2017 Super User Posted February 13, 2017 Headed out to Gilbert Run and got this one and a second smaller one yesterday on a LC Pointer78 doing a weird lift/rip retrieve. Tried for a while today at Loch Raven but the wind was too much. Had the same Pointer blow right back at my face and called it quits. Quote
Chatterbaiter Posted February 14, 2017 Posted February 14, 2017 I'm pretty new to this area. I live just outside Glen Burnie, and I'm dying to get out on some water. I've been looking/talking around a lot and so far as smaller places go, Loch Raven sounds pretty good. Anybody got some "boots on the ground" advice? Much appreciated. Quote
nosdog2 Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 There are a few ponds right near you in the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge right off 198/32. Nothing giant but really close to dip some lines once in a while. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 15, 2017 Super User Posted February 15, 2017 Had the day off and did some pond hopping. Was at the fist spot at 8am. Walked the whole place without a bite. Same deal with the second pond. By the third pond I all my "jig fishing patience" had been used up so I grabbed a spinning rod and tied a Ned on. Ok, atleast I got a fish today. Then like three casts later; Now we are talking. Then almost immediately after; The pic doesn't do him justice, he was a good bit heavier than the first one. Then, two casts later,I got another bite; I may have set the hook a bit hard and sent this little guy flying. Got him washed off and he swam off, so hopefully he is ok. A couple more small bass and a handfull of crappie finished the day off. Sometimes I wonder why I bother with other lures when the Ned works so well in so many conditions. I will send you a PM tonight/tomorrow with some spots that I like. All are a bit south of you but some of them are solid producers for numbers atleast. Quote

Can't wait to get out and catch 'em myself. I appreciate the info. Thanks! Quote

If you own cammo, and can outrun assistant ground keeper, Annapolis is good. If you ever want to go rock fishing, let me know. Quote

I would definitely be down for some rock fishing (Stripers?) as well. I've got some set-ups for it but all I've ever caught are stinking Blues.. but the occasional Spanish is nice Quote

There is a fishing show/flea market this weekend in Severna Park worth going to just for the networking alone (not to mention the pit beef). I'll be there selling used gear with our charity. This is the guy you want to talk to about fishing the Bay. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 25, 2017 Super User Posted February 25, 2017 Ok guys, I am now a believer in the LC Pointers. Anyone have some colors you can recomend that work well locally? Most of our baitfish are pale greenish so I was going to get a few in that colorway and then a few white/bright ones. Also, anyone know of any more bass-oriented fleamarkets/shows around here? I missed the first few this winter but they are always so salt-centric. I am starting to get enough surplus gear that I might get a table next winter to clear out some space, but I don't know how much stuff I can really sell at the shows I know of. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 25, 2017 Super User Posted February 25, 2017 4 more days and Black Hills opens for the season..... Put in group 31 agm batteries so will have plenty of battery power to have some fun. 2 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 25, 2017 Super User Posted February 25, 2017 I need to get up there some day. The issue is I like to fish weekdays, but live on the other side of the beltway. I need enough daylight to fish through rush hour before I venture out west. How is bank fishing access there? I like to scout places out before I drag my yak along. I think this year I am going to devote at least every other trip to really learning Cash Lake in Bowie. It is close to my house and is on my way home from work. I am super scattershot in my fishing and need to work the fundamentals more in addition to spending more time learning how to break down a spot. It opens April first and closes in October, so I do miss some good parts of the year, but I will make it work. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 25, 2017 Super User Posted February 25, 2017 There are trails around pretty much the whole lake, just need to be comfortable walking thru the woods to get down to lake side. My only suggestion would be to walk away from the easy spots, they get pounded but you can find some good areas. There is the boat ramp, obviously, to launch a kayak. You can also do it easily at the bridge which crosses over it, nice parking area and access. Its only 5 bucks to launch. During the summer it does not get dark until 8:30 or so, well after rush hour. Also, once a month there is night fishing on a Wednesday you can stay until 11 or midnight I forget which it is. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 25, 2017 Super User Posted February 25, 2017 Awesome, thanks for the info. Most of my bass fishing is hike-in bank fishing. My favorite spots are both about 2 miles one way from any parking. Quote

I have a combo and a small pile of lures that I bought for a vacation a year or so ago, but have not used sense. I have no idea what I am doing, but spent a while watching videos on youtube and now I really want to get into it. I haven't really done 'surf fishing' per se, but this last fall was the first time I fished for striper. I live on the Magothy and spent some time trying some salt/brackish water between dundalk and the magothy and had a few successful outings. Its so weird how rockfish can be there one day on a tide change and then not the next day. But it was tons of fun when I did get into them. My favorite 3 baits to throw were the heddon spook, storm chug, and a 1/2 rattle trap. I hope there is another run of them into the magothy in the spring, because it was a ton of fun. Ill let you know if they come through again on the way back... Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 I have done some rockfishing out of my kayak, but have never had much luck at it. I have all the gear for trolling, but never get the motivation. I always quit and go catch white perch whenever I try. I think this spring I need to leave the perch rods behind and make a real go of it. This is my PB striper, just a little 16" guy. Not noteworthy if I was trolling, but on the 5' UL rod I caught him on, he was the highlight of the day. 1 Quote

Got a buddy ive gone out with down in calvert on his boat to troll for fish. Just doesnt feel like fishing to me, i just like casting too much i guess - lol! Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 Yea, I am not too into it either, not that that stopped me from putting together two rods and a bunch of gear for it. But I am going to try this year a few times, I suspect I may change my opinion of kayak trolling once I hook a 26" rock. I also am going to try trolling at Rocky Gorge this coming year. I wanna start exploring some of the further out coves and might as well troll on the way there and back to launch. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 Also guys, spring is here. I swung by my local pond on the way into work today and the pads are busting out of the water and I saw a very nice bass cruising around in the shallows. I saw the beginning of some sunfish beds, so I think any week now it is going to be game-on! 1 Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 28, 2017 Super User Posted February 28, 2017 well until the temp drops later this week... this is to early, gets into the upper 70's tomorrow. Storms roll thru and the next day is over 20 degrees cooler. these big swings are not good. Quote

I'm gonna try to catch a couple tomorrow in NYC. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted March 1, 2017 Super User Posted March 1, 2017 Hah, where in NYC can you fish for bass? I have been inspired to take a day to fish around DC some more. I already have a nice Georgetown smallie to my name, but know there are more in there. I also want to give the Tidal Basin and surrounding areas a try. I think it would be a fun way to spend a nice spring day. Quote

Central Park, Prospect Park, Flusing Meadows, Kissena Park, Bailey Pond, and Silver Lake to name a few. Don't blame me if you get mugged or bitten by a rat though... ? 1 Quote
Fried Lemons Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 First bass of the year for me. Caught while jigging the current breaks along the rocks on my local river. 2 Quote
