Hey guys, just wanted to do the annual post about FOBA.  The 2017 tournament schedule is now complete so I'm posting it here.  We are open to all (boaters and co-anglers) and have a great learning/sharing environment.  If you want any information feel free shoot me a PM.  We have several members here on BR and hopefully we can add some more in the future.

Thanks for tolerating my one spam post of the year ;)

About to be back in Frederick for winter break! Itching to get out and make some casts. Im guessing a jerk bait would be bait of choice at the moment?! Also guessing the fishing has slowed down tons. Never really tried winter fishing but I am dying to get out there after being cramped in a dorm room. Let me know how the fishing has been.

Jerkbaits, and with the cold spell the next few weeks, lipless and blade baits too. The one good thing about the cold is it concentrates fish, so once the screen is lit you can go to work.

Trying to finally get my boat out on the Potomac soon. Any tips for the upper potomac around Brunswick or Point of Rocks? How should I figure out the depths and structure of the river? Cant really find much on the topography of it. Any tips on the upper potomac and fishing it would be great.

Hello all, I just started coming here semi-regularly a short while ago.  I live in Carroll County, MD and fish some local reservoirs around here and Lower PA.  I fish Piney Run, Little Seneca (Black Hills) in MD and Long Arm, Redman and Marburg in PA.  I think I might try Conewago Lake at Pinchot Park near Dillsburg, PA this year.  I retired early this year, work part-time and enjoy time with my Family.  I belong to an old guys bass club locally.  Youngest Member in our Club is in his 60s, oldest in his 70s, and we are a little short on boaters at this time.

I have met person on another Forum that wants to join a bass club.  He lives in Woodbine, presently a non-boater and takes his daughter fishing from shore at a couple of farm ponds now.  Anybody know of a bass club in search of a non-boater for 2017 In Howard, Carroll or Frederick Counties?

Kris,

The club that Logan posted a few post above yours is a very good one and open to non-boaters. I have been a non-boater in it for about 6 years. Check out the website, fishonbassanglers.com, we are in Germantown just a few minutes away from Black Hills.

I just moved from My Airy to Pasadena and new to the forum. I'm a huge Piney Run fan, aside from it wearing out my trolling motor. We fish it every spring from opening day till the bite slows. I can't count how many 5+ fish we've caught there. I spend most of my time on the Upper Potomac between Harpers Ferry and Antietam creek. Sorry I can't help you with a bass club, I don't do tournaments anymore but I'd meet you at Piney Run in the spring and put you in the back of the boat. It's usually cold and windy at that time but the fish are big.

PM Sent. AS long as he can ties his own knots and take his own fish off the hook and maybe bail a little water once in a while.

Do any of you guys do any surf fishing around here?  I have a combo and a small pile of lures that I bought for a vacation a year or so ago, but have not used sense. I have no idea what I am doing, but spent a while watching videos on youtube and now I really want to get into it.

I started as a surf rat in Long island. haven't done much in a while. The surf fishing around here is nearly non existent. There is a brief shot at striped bass in the spring from a couple of spots in the Bay, and you can bottom fish for pan fish with bait. The Ocean in MD, DE or better yet NJ are your best bets. Surf fishing requires dedication to catch consistently, But every once in a while, you hit a blitz just right and you are hooked again.

That is what I figured as I never really see it mentioned or see much surf tackle in the local shops.  It's a shame as it looks to be a ton of fun.  Some times when shore fishing for perch I will find a group of small stripers or blues and it is a blast to wade out and catch them.

 Before Christmas a friend noticed the rod in my rack so we went out back and spent an hour drinking beers and lobbing 3oz weights across the field and now I am all pumped to give it a go for real.  Are there any specific spots on the eastern shore I should look at?  Even the "pier and surf" forum seems to be pretty much all pier in the MD section.

http://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/.   Check this out, they can be hush hush though as far as telling you if they're running or not. A lot of knowledge here about surf fishing though. When I indulge myself with the surf I head to OC or Assateaque. The flats beneath the Conowingo dam can be on fire certain times of the year also.

Yeah, even before the InterWeb® there was very little shared outside one's clique. I know I'm going to fish hell, I've sent guys 30 miles north and south of the bite on several occasions, but until you've rusted out 2 4x4s, swam out to a rock in pitch black, lost a spouse/significant other, etc over the surf, you just get the Fisherman® (went to crap when it stopped being the LI Fisherman®) report. Oh, and NC has some very good surf as well, but that's a haul.

Interesting, so surf fishing is about not only being at the right spot, but also at the right time?  I am used to fishing for a more "captive audience".

I've always found it's more about timing then the spot,you need to learn to read the surf. Look for the rip currents, and fish in and around the top. The big fish will sit at the top of the rips waiting for smaller fish to be pulled to them. If you search stripers on line there is an awesome post that titled reading the surf, and its on point and helped me a ton. Don't always listen to what your being told by other surf fisherman, as admitted above they will lie right to your face to keep you off the bite.

Interesting info, it sounds like planning a trip 3-5 hours away will be tough as there is no way to predict how the local conditions will be.

I wonder if I can get my combo to cast far enough to hit the hole off of Jonas Green pier?  Otherwise the poor thing is going to be demoted to catfish duty.

Why don't you guys fish the Potomac in March? ;)

We don't have any tournaments in March.  If we did, it would likely be on the Potomac (as was our tradition for a while)...But we start in April now.

PS, there are other places to fish around here....You should try them sometime ;).

Can we come even if we aren't sure if we can commit to FOBA?

Absolutely, we don't expect people to commit to anything beforehand.  FOBA doesn't have any commitment requirements anyway, members can participate as much or as little as they like.

Shoot me a PM for more details if you're interested, I'm sure you know where SVHS is but I can give you the room number and all that stuff.  (Same thing applies to anyone else reading this as well)

I took a bike trip south of Hancock this weekend.  Didn't get to fish much but caught a few smallies in the river by Dam 5.  Saw a ton of great water both in the river and the canal and really need to head up there with my kayak this winter.  Anyone have the lowdown on Little and Big Pools?  The look promising but the wind was up when we passed.

Little pool is a nice place to fish if you have a kayak or canoe.. nice bass, pickerel and yellow perch in there...

big pool has a ramp so it is accessible to bass boats, there's some BIG largemouth in there.. if you can get them to bite lol... it's a nice place to fish

Coll, thanks for the info.  I have a kayak and am determined to be more adventurous with it this year.  I also keep eying those little white water sit-ins.  I saw some guys who had them fitted with backpack straps, if I got something like that, my travel rod, and and some rope for launching/landing, I bet I could fish every body of water in the state.

First fish of the year;

First bass of the year;

I have worked every day sense Xmas, this was my first outing.  Caught the pic on a Siebert 1/4oz Chatterbait w/ Menace Grub trailer, the bass on a 1/4oz willow-bladed chartreuse/white spinnerbait w/ grub trailer.

The bad part of the trip was I somehow managed to backlash all there rods I had with me.  Two of the reels even have SV spools :annoyed1:  I can blame a numb thumb on one of them, but man I am moving to a cheaper line for a while.
